7.1: Roll High

Welcome to the first “real” chapter of Phoenix’s gen! 🙂 Before we get started, I just want to give a couple of shout outs!

The first is to the amazing WagonFruit, who did an absolutely incredible job on all of Harper and Dev’s renovations ( 😉 ) She gave the Rosebrook house a complete makeover for Gen 7 and it’s stunning, as you guys will see during this gen! ❤

I’d also love to give a huge thank you to my dear friend OJenn, who created Erik and Rubi’s gorgeous home for me! It’s absolutely perfect, and we will be seeing a lot of their beautiful house this gen as well ❤

Thank you both so much, ladies! I appreciate you both!

——————————————————

I’m pretty sure this is the quietest this freaking house has been in… forever.

Would you believe it almost feels weird trying to study without all that drilling and banging and shouting?

Yeah… I wouldn’t believe it either. It’s fucking awesome! Finally, some peace!

About time, right?

One of the first things I can remember is from back when I was like four years old. Mama had just gotten a ton of money from her first book, and came up with the bright idea that our already-humongous house needed a basement for some reason…

Anyway, I was being nosy or curious or whatever, and ended up stumbling down into the construction site. I looked up, and I saw this huge freaking dude with a drill walking toward me.

And I freaking lost it. I had nightmares for weeks.

But I had no clue that the real nightmare would last for the next thirteen years!

And now it’s finally over. And not just for a few weeks or a few months this time… For good.

And I’ve gotta admit… As much as I hated having to deal with all that construction for like, my whole freaking life, it almost feels worth it when I see how happy Mama is about it.

I always used to wonder why Gammy and Opi were so cool with letting her like, demolish the place. But I think maybe I kinda get it now.

So I guess this is pretty much a win-win all around. Mama and Dev are happy, and I finally get some peace and quiet around here.

Lila told me she thinks she’s actually gonna miss it though. Seriously? Little twerp has no idea what she’s talking about.

And Tam basically said the same thing at school today. Something like, “Aw, but your house always used to be so fun!” Yeah, not exactly sure that’s how I’d describe it… But I guess Tam’s definition of ‘fun’ has always been a little weird? Okay, or a lot weird. I mean, it’s Tam.

Bryce just kinda shrugged when I told him… But I guess he never really had to deal with any of that shit. He practically lives at football practice during the week, so we usually hang out on the weekends, at Papa and Rubi’s. Which is… kinda like a totally different world than Mama and Dev’s house. So he doesn’t really get it.

He’s still saying we should “celebrate” at game this weekend though… Ha! Yeah right! Guess he doesn’t get that either. For somebody who spends so much time over there, apparently he still doesn’t have any freaking clue. At Mama and Dev’s house, sure, we could crack open a few beers and have a little fun. But at Papa and Rubi’s? No way!

I love them and stuff, but they’re just so freaking lame about that kinda thing. I’ve never seen either one of them even touch like, a drop of alcohol. They don’t have any in their house… at all! And whenever we go out to eat and I order a beer, they look at me like I just kicked a puppy or something. It makes no freaking sense. They’re really cool about pretty much everything else… but not that.

So yeah, the odds of them letting Bryce bring some beers to game night is like, zero. Especially since we let Jasper play with us now. I’d totally love it if we could though. Like, it’s my duty as big brother to try and corrupt him, isn’t it? But I’m not stupid enough to try and do it when his parents are home!

Ugh, I just hope Bryce doesn’t try and pull anything anyway… I FINALLY convinced Hallie to come to game with us tomorrow, so it’s gotta be perfect. I really wanna make sure she has a good time. D&D’s not exactly her thing… Or at least that’s what she keeps telling me. But she hasn’t even tried it yet! And I really think she’ll like it.

I mean, she definitely seems like she likes ME, right? So obviously she’s got good taste.

Seriously though. Hallie is like… the most perfect girl I think I’ve ever met. She’s smart and funny and SO hot… And, as Bryce and Tam love reminding me, way out of my league. But for whatever reason, she decided to give me a chance (Tam says I must’ve rolled a 20 on my Charisma check… Ha!).

So, yeah. I just can’t mess this up. Not like I did with Skylar, or Elyse. Or basically any other girl I’ve ever spoken to in my life.

It’s already been over a month since me and Hallie’s first date. That’s like… a record for me. I’ve never had any girl stick around this long. And she hasn’t let us put it on Facebook or anything yet, but I accidentally called her my girlfriend the other day and she didn’t like, correct me or anything. So that’s gotta be a good sign, right?

It could totally work out this time. I know it can!

And if you think about it, there’s like three and a half billion girls in the world. So, statistically speaking, like, at least a couple of them have gotta be willing to put up with me. Maybe even willing enough to make it so I’m not stuck in the loser virgin club with Tam for the rest of my life?

Anyway, I should probably start taking advantage of all this peace and quiet. I’ve still gotta study for my chem test, and I promised Hallie I’d help her figure out her character sheet before Saturday too.

She’s still seems really confused about how it all works, but I just keep trying to remind her that it’s all about the dice.

Like, you try your best to make good decisions and stuff. You get to control what you do… But you don’t really have any say in how it all turns out. All you can do is hope you get lucky. You try and roll high.

And you hope you have a DM who’s willing to show a little mercy.

  1. Oh my god!!! Phoenix is a little nerd!!!! Phoenix the D&D nerd I love it. Like, with my entire soul. I’ve never actually played before (seeing as the group I was going to join broke up because the dm was super stressed) but I’m hoping to play some this summer! Also, the fact that they haven’t told him what’s up with Rubi is… not cool. He needs to know why they look like he kicked a puppy every time he gets a beer otherwise he won’t understand and it will just continue. Really excited for Phoenix chapter in this legacy as well! Already 7?! I don’t know if any of us will be willing to let this end….

    1. Hahahaha yes I’m having a lot of fun with my little geek ^_^ (I play tabletop RPGs myself… so fun! I hope you get the chance to!

And yeah, Phoenix has no idea that Erik and Rubi are former addicts. :-/ It’s not something that’s come up before, and definitely not something they’re proud of. I think if the right time comes, they would bring it up. But for now…

And yes, gen 7 already! I can’t believe it!!! Thank you so much for reading and supporting my story ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  2. All the guys in this gen are freaking hot. The women are pretty too. I got so giddy when I caught a glimpse of the dm screen. It’s so cool that they’re playing d&d. I love it! I’m curious what his character is.

It’s funny that he’s already having trouble with love. This is only the beginning Phoenix.

    1. Hehehehe lots of lookers around these parts! I can’t take any credit for all of them though… Bryce and Tam came from the casting call ^_^

We actually get more on the D&D side of things next chapter 😉 And yes, girl trouble already! Poor dude 😦

  3. Super nerd alert! (Just kidding! My son loves D & D. Plays every Saturday night.)

    Nice cc too!

Wow. 13 years of construction? I would go crazy! 😭

Hmm…I guess Rubi and Erik didn’t confess WHY they have a no alcohol rule. Could have been a good example moment for Phoenix. He has his father’s genes and might have abusive tendencies (I hope not!)

Phoenix’s room looks great. Can’t wait to see the rest of the house!

And it looks like the super nerd isn’t nerdy when it comes to girls. That Is VERY surprising. Good for him that his beauty isn’t turned off by it and even wants to join in! And maybe his dreams of losing his v-card might come true.

    1. Haha I do a game night every Saturday too! Hehe Nerds unite!

And yes, Phoenix has no idea :-/ On the one hand, I can see why it’d be good to tell him. But on the other, I can understand why that wouldn’t be information they’d want to share. Such a tough spot to be in!

And haha don’t let his random lucky streak fool you. Phoenix is actually super nerdy (and not very successful!) when it comes to girls. But like Tam said, he must have aced his charisma roll because Hallie is giving him a chance! 😛 Not sure she’s *entirely* willing to participate, but she agreed to give game a chance too. Hopefully all will go well and he can work on making that dream come true 😉

  4. Pheonix is so good looking, wow! Everyone is, but he is definitely a looker.

I can see why they wouldn’t tell Pheonix from the get go about everyone’s troubles, but he’s 17 now (I think?). I feel like that could have been a good conversation to have when he turned the legal drinking age/16.

“And you hope you have a DM who’s willing to show a little mercy.” Poor Pheonix, don’t you know the real DM is Citizen? No? Well, you’ll learn.

    1. Thanks! I think he’s so cute! And such a wonderful blend of both Harper and Erik!

I feel like Erik and Rubi are definitely going to have to have that tough conversation with Phoenix eventually (for what it’s worth, he also doesn’t know Harper went to prison… lots of shameful secrets on both sides! 😦 ) You may be right that they missed a great opportunity to express the dangers of addiction with him! 😦

And Hehehehe I’m glad you liked that part 😉 I kinda put that in there on purpose for that very reason 😈 I am the DM and many of the dice are rigged for unfortunate rolls… 😉 Hehehe

Thank you so much for reading!

  5. Phoenix is CUTE! Look what those Erik-genes did for you, huh 😉 I do not understand how girls wouldn’t like him, he is GORGEOUS, and has a cute dorky side, but also the Erik party side and I just LOVE IT so much.
(Y’know, my sim self in an alternate universe still isn’t quite over Erik, but I bet she’d be cool with his offspring :p Kidding, kidding… kinda ;))

Not sure about this Hallie yet. She better be pretty freaking great if she’s gonna be all over my Phoenix (yes, I’m already protective of him. His soul is still pure and good, I have to!)

I do not like that Rubi and Erik never told their sons about their history. I feel like that’s bound to lead to some drama. I understand that it might be very difficult for them, but tbh, waiting for like 18 years to spring this on him isn’t gonna be much better, is it?

Also, I already love the relationship Phoenix has with his siblings. I really, really like Jasper, because he just looks like a little Christmas angel. I love that he’s hanging out with PHoenix’ friends, they seem to have such a chill group!

As for Harper: Girl is looking GOOD! Late 30s (I think) suits her! Can’t say the same for Rubi, unfortunately, but maybe it’s just the face she’s pulling in that one shot.

Can you tell I’m excited for this gen? I feel like it didn’t come across quite enough 😛

    1. I always love your comments so much, Sonnie! ❤️ Glad you’re such a Phoenix fan already! As for Hallie, we will get to know her a lot better in Saturday’s chapter 🙂

And you’re right that not telling Phoenix the truth probably wasn’t the best move for Erik and Rubi :-/ Hopefully that won’t bite them in the butt later?

I love his relationship with his siblings too! We will see both relationships in more detail as time goes by 🙂

      Thanks again, Sonnie! ❤️❤️❤️

  6. Oh Phee! Look at you, nerdy buoy!

I am a sucker for a nerd, but hoo… I smell some serious obliviousness and self-esteem issues about his person 😬

It’s sweet that he’s pleased about his mom’s happiness though! (And clearly he has impeccable taste in friends 😁)

I wonder how Hallie will feel about that D&D game?? LOL

And yikes at Rubrik not telling him about their issues; I feel like Phif is sensitive enough to not drink in front of the if he knew!

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Obliviousness and self-esteem issues are both pretty accurate unfortunately 😂 The second one totally comes from all the poor kid’s misadventures with girls and bullying at school. He internalizes a lot… :-/

Definite great taste in friends, and he most definitely loves his Mama and likes seeing her happy! ❤️

Saturday we will see how D&D goes! 😉 And I think you’re right — if Phoenix understood Erik and Rubi’s past with addictive substances, he’d never drink in front of them 😦

  7. Mercy? From the DM? Well, only if they skewed things too far against you. Otherwise, it’s better if your DM is fair and not actively trying to murder the party… Personally, I find I prefer Pathfinder, though. But I can identify with Hallie. I mean, unlike her, I actually wanted to play D&D for the longest time and never got to until I joined an online group recently, but character creation can be beastly, especially if you’re playing a spellcaster of any kind. It’s something a first- or second-time player is likely to need help with. It’s even harder if you’re playing using point buy for D&D 5e or standard or low fantasy Pathfinder, and you’re playing a class that needs all but one stat to be at least decent (oh hi, rangers in Pathfinder…) if you want that character to be effective. Dice rolled characters can be more forgiving, depending on what rules your DM uses for rolling a character, and assuming you don’t roll poorly for all 6 stats.

That said, Phoenix isn’t entirely right, it’s not all about the dice, unless that’s just how his DM runs the game. Sure, the dice can cause you to crit fail or crit succeed, but if you build your character well with the right feats, stats, traits, etc, you’ll usually be okay. Unless, of course, you’re Will Wheaton. How the game plays depends on what kind of game your DM prefers to run. Some prefer character and story. Some would rather challenge the players with dungeons and combat that require thought, planning, and teamwork. And of course the group you’re playing with also matters. Some people love character interaction, some want a dungeon that requires skill and party tactics to survive, and others would rather just go kill things.

I think it’s fun that Phoenix and most of his friends are D&D geeks. Hopefully Hallie enjoys it. I’m kind of surprised they don’t have any other girls in the group, though, ’cause D&D/other tabletop RPGs are definitely not as much a boys’ club as they used to be. Around 1/4 to 1/2 of the people I play with (depending on the game) are women, including myself.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Haha there’s actually one girl in their game group 🙂 we barely saw her in that screenshot today but we’ll meet her next chapter 🙂

And yes, D&D is definitely about a lot more than the dice! 🙂 Phoenix was just simplifying his explanation for Hallie.

      Thanks for reading!

  8. LOL, how did a MASSIVE DORK like Phoenix get a girlfriend like that? I’ve never seen a teenage boy use so many exclamation points, good lord. Maybe she’s into that puppydog enthusiasm (as long as he doesn’t get so excited he pees on the carpet when he sees her), or maybe he really rocks the dog tag + sweater look.

I needed a moldy bread warning for this chapter though, for shame.

Gorgeous renovations, of course–my compliments to the renovator. 😉 I also love Tamsin and his pink (or maybe lavender??) hair. I guess his sheer level of dorkiness can make Phoenix seem like a stud muffin in comparison, though I think Tamsin’s geekiness is pretty cute. Loved the D&D scene, with Tam getting really into DMing.

Good luck, son of bread. Hopefully he doesn’t mess things up too badly with his girlfriend!

    Liked by 4 people

    1. Haha he’s pretty dorky, but he’s also cute and very kind and they both love video games 🙂 For Phoenix, getting a date usually isn’t the problem. It’s keeping them around for the long run. So we’ll see how things go with Hallie!

And yes, Tam is definitely much dorkier than Phoenix is. Tamsin takes things to the extreme when it comes to geekiness whereas Phoenix is a little more grounded, despite his nerdy interests. 😉

Saturday we’ll see how things go at D&D, and whether it makes things better or worse for Phoenix and Hallie’s relationship.

  9. What a cute young man Phoenix has grown into. It’s no wonder he goes through so many girls 😉

Realizing you grew up in a sober home for a reason is always a bit of a trip tbh, and hopefully he finds out the easy way (i.e. his dad sitting down and talking to him about it) And not through experience.

I love that he’s playing D&D like a little nerd. And the DM/High roll metaphor is super cool. From experience, I don’t see many high rolls in his future.

    Liked by 3 people

    1. He’s definitely a cutie! Getting a date usually isn’t a huge problem for him… it’s getting the girls to stick around. Poor kid haha more on that side of things later!

I also hope that Phoenix learns the truth the easy way too. Time will tell…

And I’m glad you enjoyed his little metaphor! Phoenix loves making metaphors, as you will see 😉 And hopefully his DM will be merciful? 😈

  10. You’ve gotta be able to share your passions to be a good couple. Though some couples do better by supporting from a distance, lol. I guess we’ll see which kind this couple is. Teen Phoenix is so cute. I may have spent 10 minutes staring at his adorable face trying to figure out which features he got from my Theo.

  11. Phoenix, the adorable dork. Poor dude. He’s so clueless. And he hopes to get laid? Dude you gotta have game for that to happen and I don’t think he has any. And I’m not talking about D&D. But maybe he’ll get a lucky roll….

Rubi looked so uncomfortable when he was drinking that beer, I think it’s time they sat him down and had a heart to heart with him. Not sure it will stop him from drinking or if he will just start to hide it.

Tam and BRYCE!!! Such good friends…

    Liked by 3 people

    1. Lmao “and I’m not talking about D&D” 😂

Phoenix indeed has very little game. 😦 He tries though. He’s such a sweetheart!

I don’t even think Erik and Rubi even want Phoenix to stop drinking altogether. I think they are just painfully aware of how easy it is to get addicted, and the fact that science shows addictive tendencies can be inherited. Eek! They just worry and hope he’s being careful.

I think a conversation may end up happening sooner or later… but we’ll see!

  12. Harper’s dad never told her of his drug dealing. Harper hasn’t told Phoenix about her time in jail. Eric and Ruby don’t mention their drug problem to Phoenix. Looks like a bad cycle to me. The parents need to sit down and talk to him. I am kind of surprise at Devin for not suggesting they all sit down and discuss the passed. He has always seem to see things others do not.
This family is good at hiding things from each other and in the long run no one benefits. Everyone makes mistakes, just own up to it, sometimes telling someone about your mistakes helps them to understand and not make the same mistakes. If they do make the same mistakes at least they have someone that understands they can talk to.
Sometimes I feel like my mind is older than my body why can’t I be more carefree like others my age. Is something wrong with me?🤔

    1. Definitely a lot of secrets… I think it’s always hard to reveal a dark part of your past to your children. Not that it excuses things. But it’s definitely their reasoning! You’re right about all the benefits of sharing those things with your kids though. And hopefully Erik and Rubi (and Harper, on her end of things!) will find the strength to share those things with Phoenix soon ❤️

  15. Well Phoenix has grown nicely! I’m sad that my Tomato is gone but maybe a new puppy?
I don’t like this Hallie girl. She seems like she could be trouble. Or maybe I’m just overreacting. Either way we need to keep our guards up! His friends look cool though.

  17. Already love Phoenix, but you got me with the D&D. Also, Tam is my favorite?? I know nothing about this kid but he better stick around. Love this little geek squad.

Also, I guess Rubi and Erik are keeping mum about their past to their kids? Does he know about Harper’s jail time? Probably not plot important, but I really feel like if any of the parents of any of the gens had just talked about their past with their kids, we could’ve avoided some scenarios…

      1. You know what I mean. Something kinda big will happen where Phoenix has to bring a new perspective to things/ gain life experience. Happened with everyone so far.
Not too much with Alex, but if anything, it was the house burning down. Mari, the twins. Tobi, almost losing his marriage (and later whatever stopped him drinking, I can’t remember) Joce, Luc’s death. Zayne, I believe it was Mari’s advice. Harper, prison among other things (but it took a while). Call it a curse, call it a blessing. Whatever you want.

        Liked by 1 person

  21. Huh. I just realized that some of the hot headed Rosebrooks really calm down once they get to late adulthood. But Mari was the only one who had the same temper even in her elder years. Phoenix seems relatively calmer than his mom, but then again, that’s not much of a shock lmao.

And it’s really interesting how zen Zayne has become. Like wow.
