Interlude: I Do

Mari checked her makeup in the mirror for what had to be the tenth time. I guess that’s as good as it’s gonna get. She thought, sighing softly to herself.

1

She wasn’t even sure why she cared so much… After all, the only wedding guests would be her own family and Colette’s parents. And it wasn’t like there would be any professional photos for her to appear in.

Mari couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness at the thought. No matter how much she or Jonas or her parents had offered, Tobias and Colette had refused to let them help pay for anything. Which meant that the evening’s nuptials would be unconventional, to say the least…

No real wedding dress (Colette had found hers at a local thrift shop). No wedding cake (Jade had baked and decorated one last night). No professional photographer (“That’s what smartphones are for.” Colette had said). No fancy venue (They’d rented a small wooden arch and some benches for the backyard). They didn’t even have rings (“Someday.” Tobi promised. “When we can afford them”).

They deserve so much more than this. Mari thought, taking a seat on the edge of the bed. They both work so hard.

2

Both Tobias and Colette were working summer jobs on top of all their parenting duties. Colette was starting University classes in the fall, and Tobi had been offered a contract with Windenburg FC just a few weeks ago (one which he was very eager to accept, despite being nothing more than a benchwarmer. “Hey, it’s a start!” He’d said.).

That’s a Hell of a lot for two kids to handle, Mari thought.

3

But then, was it really fair to call them “kids” anymore?

Knock-knock-knock.

Mari jumped at the sound of a sharp knocking against the door.

Who could that be? She wondered. Certainly not Jonas or the boys. None of them were particularly shy about barging into each other’s rooms unannounced (which had proved to be a rather unfortunate habit at times).

“Come in.” Mari called out at last.

4

Fuck.

Diego was probably the last person she’d been expecting to see standing in the doorway. He shuffled his feet uncertainly for a moment. “S-sorry to bother you… Do you have a minute?”

Mari just shrugged.

“So, it’s… Finally the big day, huh?” He laughed nervously as he crossed the threshold. “Or… big night, I guess.” He corrected himself quickly.

5

“Yeah.” Mari agreed, trying to ignore the twisting sensation in her stomach.

What does he want? Of course, she had a feeling she already knew the answer.

“I don’t think I ever got to tell you this,” Diego sat beside her uncomfortably. “But your boys are pretty amazing kids. You did a great job with them.” He said seriously. “And… Even if this whole situation isn’t exactly, uh… ideal… I’m really lucky to call Tobias my son-in-law.”

“Thanks…” Mari hesitated before continuing. “And… Colette is such a sweet girl. So mature, too. You should be really proud of her.”

“Oh trust me, I am.” Diego assured her. “Though I don’t think I’ll ever understand where she gets it from… Definitely not her mother, that’s for sure.” He smiled hesitantly, and tried to catch her eye.

6

Mari almost returned the gesture.

They fell into an uncomfortable silence then, and each second that ticked by felt like an eternity. Mari stared down at the floor, trying desperately to come up with an excuse to leave the room. But before she could think of anything, Diego spoke once more.

“Look…” He said softly. “In less than an hour, our kids are gonna be married. And… before that happens…” Diego paused, shaking his head for a moment. “I know I’m the last person in the world you want to talk to. But I just need you to listen to me for a second… okay? There’s something I just really need to say. And I’ve been waiting more than 18 years to say it.”

8

Mari felt like she was going to be sick. She couldn’t even find the words to speak. So instead, she simply nodded.

And listened.

“Mari… I’m sorry.” Diego looked into Mari’s eyes as he spoke. And, for the first time, she did not look away. “I know how lame and insincere that probably sounds, but I really don’t know any other way to say it. I’ve never stopped feeling like shit for what I did to you. I never wanted to hurt you. You were the first girl I ever loved… Maybe even the only one.” He shook his head slowly. “And I threw it all away because I was too much of a fucking coward.” His voice was suddenly bitter, and cold. “I should have told you how I was feeling. I should have told you I was getting tired of waiting. But I didn’t. I was such a dumb kid… And I fucked it all up.”

7

He bowed his head a moment before continuing. “I know I should have said all of this years ago…  And I wanted to. But the longer I stayed away, the harder and harder it got to pick up that phone.” Diego shrugged helplessly. “And when I found out that you… I mean, when I heard about what you were doing…” He cleared his throat uncomfortably for a moment. “Y’know, how you’d changed… I knew why. I knew I was the one who did that to you. How the Hell could I face you again after that? So I just kept trying to hide, I guess. And when I finally left the city, I thought things would get easier…  And I guess they did, for a while…”

10

“But I never forgot about you, Mari. And I never stopped loving you. Never.” Diego paused, staring at her intently for a moment. Mari felt her cheeks redden as the meaning behind his words sunk in. “You’re the best friend I think I’ve ever had.” He continued. “And hurting you is probably the biggest mistake I’ve made in my entire life.” He took a slow, deep breath. “I love my daughter more than anything. And I will never regret having her…

“But Mari, I will always regret hurting you.”

9

Then he fell silent, and turned his gaze to stare down at the floor below.

It was a long time before Mari was able to find her voice. A million thoughts seemed to buzz around in her mind at once as the weight of his words crashed down over her, like a wave. And for a moment, she truly felt as though she would drown in it.

At last, Mari took a slow, deep breath.

“Diego…” She said softly, breaking the silence at last. “You totally rehearsed that, didn’t you?”

11

A small, surprised laugh escaped his lips as he lifted his gaze to meet hers once more. “Only about a hundred times.” He replied, smiling tentatively at her.

Mari studied his face for a moment. It was the first time she’d truly looked at him since their reunion all those months ago. And that was when she understood.

12

She hated the Diego who had betrayed her all those years ago. Mari could never forgive him… And maybe she never would.

But the man sitting beside her now was not the reckless, impulsive boy who had broken her heart… He was a hard-working businessman. A loving and devoted father. An entirely different person than he had been eighteen years ago.

And Mari did not hate him.

“It meant a lot to hear you say that.” She replied at last. “And, Diego?” Mari took a deep breath. “I… I think I forgive you.”

13

“W-what?!”

“I forgive you.” Mari repeated, her tone more certain this time. “You made a dumb mistake. Like… really fucking dumb. And you hurt me so much… But I’ve made plenty of dumb mistakes too. And trust me, I hurt myself much worse than you ever did.” She paused for a moment, thoughtful. “But I was able to forgive myself for it. Because I’m a different person now. And… so are you.”

She sighed softly. “I was so damn scared to face you. When I found out who Colette was… I kinda panicked.”

Diego nodded. “I get it… So did I, when I found out about Tobi.”

“But you know what? I think maybe this whole thing was… I dunno… What’s that corny old saying? ‘A blessing in disguise’?” Mari laughed at how cheesy her words sounded. “We both needed this, Diego. And maybe now… We can finally move forward.” She finished with a shrug.

“So… After all this time, you really…?”

14

“I do.”

Diego shook his head slowly, a small smile coming to his lips. “Wow.” He said softly. “That was a Hell of a lot easier than I thought it’d be.”

Mari couldn’t help but laugh. “So much easier.” She agreed, her smiling fading slightly. “I won’t lie. It’s still really weird to see you again… I mean, there are a lot of memories, I guess. Ones that might take a while to fade. But…” The woman shrugged.

15

“I get it.” He assured her. “I know exactly what you mean, and…” Diego shook his head. “God, I really am sorry, Mari.”

“I know.”

Diego let out a soft sigh. “I dunno. I just… I wish there was something – anything – I could do to make it up to you.”

16

With a smile, Mari rose to her feet, relishing in the feeling of the immense weight that had finally been lifted from her weary shoulders. “You gave me an amazing daughter-in-law, who gave me a pair of the most beautiful grandbabies anyone could ever ask for…” Her smile widened. “So how about we call it even?”

Note: I can’t believe it, but this was my 100th chapter of this legacy! I just wanted to take a quick second to thank you all so much for reading and supporting this story. It’s grown so much since I’ve started, and I just keep falling in love with this family more and more as I go (I know it doesn’t SEEM like I love them with all the crap I put them through, but… tough love, I guess? 😉 )

So THANK YOU so much, and here’s to the next 100 chapters! 🙂

  1. Yay. Smiling again!!!! Thanks for letting them clear the air. I have a feeling things may change and it’s good Mari and Diego can now be a united front. I hope to see more of her smiling now instead of always looking anxious. Stefan may need to see this. Congrats on 100 chapters and keeping us all on the edge of our seats. :). And good call way back when when you decided to allow her to find Jonas.

    1. Lmao! Diego is still hopelessly in love with Mari (in case you didn’t notice 😛 Poor guy!) but for Mari that ship sailed long LONG ago haha she is very happy with Jonas! 🙂

    1. Hahahaha like I told kaffepigen, Diego may still be in love with Mari, but Mari has zero romantic feelings for him anymore, so no worry about that. She is very much in love with Jonas! 🙂

And thank you! I loved how they and out^\^

  2. I almost felt sorry for Diego there. Poor guy needs to stop being so harsh on himself. (That’s probably an unpopular opinion lol!) But he’s lived with the guilt long enough, and with the consequences (such as the delightful Amelie…). I don’t think he should blame himself for Mari’s downward spiral. Sure, he was the catalyst, but she did it all to herself.

Anyway, glad the air is cleared up between these two now, and hopefully it will give mari some needed closure too.

The wedding was beautiful, regardless of whether it’s not considered extravagant. The setting was so romantic with all the lights hanging from the tree, and I loved Colette’s dress. Congratulations to the newlyweds 🙂

    1. Oh, and sidenote, the ceremony pictures make me really wish those pesky sims actually sat down for weddings. I always want to pull my hair out when everyone gets in the bride and groom’s face as they’re saying their vows *shakes fist at EA*

      1. Yes it’s so annoying! (Though you know what’s funny? They actually did sit for the ceremony. In fact, they IGNORED it! Haha I wonder why that happened. I made everyone sit down first. Maybe that was the difference?) I was lucky to get some nice shots of the family looking/smiling at the couple though! ^_^

    2. I don’t think that’s an unpopular opinion! I feel horrible for him too. He’s spent 18 years feeling so guilty (and also holding on to his love for Mari… It’s almost tragic. But I hope he can move on now!)

I’m glad you liked the wedding! It was so sweet and really warmed my heart to screenshot it ❤

    3. Oh – Plumbob – I’ve been feeling sorry for Diego and his mistake since he made it! It was an awful thing to do as he said. But the consequences were a bit more than he deserved.

  3. I’m so proud of both Diego and Mari. Both of them have come so, so very far. They’re so mature and kind and forgiving and…GUH. Not sure whether their talk touches me more than seeing Tobi and Colette get married! Colette looks so beautiful! This intimate ceremony is even more gorgeous than anything more expensive than Mari would have liked them to have.

So much love for all of them! And for you, for reaching Chapter 100! ❤ 🙂

    1. Thank you so much!!! I really loved writing that resolution for Diego and Mari! A lot of people were expecting some kind of giant fight between them, but it didn’t feel right. They are both adults who have grown and changed so much 🙂 And I’m glad you enjoyed the wedding ceremony too! ^_^ Thank you so much for reading! ❤

      1. Definitely not a fight! I think it was perfect the way they handled the situation. Mari was so full of grace and dignity too – she’s come a long way since the days of her legendary temper. Not that she doesn’t still have one, but she’s really got it well under control now.

Looking forward to seeing what happens from here on out! Especially with Stefan. He’s so close to my heart! 🙂

  4. I know you didn’t notice me in the wedding party…but I was the one in tights playing the violin…ok then I took out a very painful wedgie as I walked to my car after the party…hey I am not the most graceful! Listen, in all seriousness this was monumental for both of them it seems – we always hammered on about Mari not getting over it and amazingly Diego never did either. I am so happy right now wedgie tights and all!!!

    1. Lmao OMG the image in my head right now… XD

And yes, Diego never got over Mari! Perhaps a little surprising haha But I’ve always imagined that Diego legitimately loved Mari, he just fucked up HORRIBLY, and hasn’t been able to forgive himself. For him, Mari’s “the one that got away”. It’s kind of tragic, actually! 😦 Hopefully now he can move on now that they both have closure! 🙂

  5. Congratulations on reaching 100 chapters!! 😀

Two great things happened: Diego and Mari forgiving each other and Colette and Tobi getting married. Loved the way Diego and Mari cleared things up maturely. Colette is so gorgeous, especially the wedding dress. Congratulations to the newlyweds! 🙂

IT’S ABOUT TIME! Amelie’s not grumpy! That means she truly supports Colette! Time to switch to #TeamILoveAmelie.

    1. Hahaha thank you so much Simslover!!! I was happy this chapter ended up being my 100th, because it’s such a good one with so many good things! ^_^

And yes, Amelie is happy for her daughter! She’s not a monster. Just… A little bitchy 😛 I’m glad you like her more now hehehe

  6. Omg such a Great chapter. That talk between diego and mari was long overdue and I am so glad they made up. It’s like mari said they are both different people now. I just hope that Diego doesn’t try to get mari back or sth bc we can never break up the ss Marionas. But even though she forgave him I think Mari wouldn’t go THAT far.

    1. I’m glad you liked the resolution with Mari and Diego! It felt SO good to write!!! 🙂 Don’t worry about the Marionas… It sails on! Haha Diego is definitely still in love with Mari (hopefully I conveyed that well enough XD) but Mari doesn’t feel anything romantic for him anymore. And Diego won’t go that far either, by the way! He knows how happy Mari is with Jonas ^_^ Hopefully Diego can move on now that he has resolution!

    1. Thank you Jess! Between Mari and Diego’s closure and Tobi and Colette’s wedding, I’m really happy with how this chapter came out ^_^

  7. Another amazing chapter. I teared up. Its so nice to see Mari really get the last piece of the puzzle she needed for peace of mind. Now at least the kids don’t have that drama hanging over their head.

  8. Congratulations on your 100th chapter! I’m glad Mari and Diego had this sit down. It’s a good thing Tobi and Colette met each other at camp all those years ago otherwise Mari and Diego would have never had the opportunity to get the closure they both needed and the fact that Mari was able to forgive him shows how much she has grown as a person. I know people in their 40’s and 50’s still holding on to the hurt and betrayal of an ex that happened decades before and they have become bitter because they never got the closure that they needed. Not everyone gets to have the person who hurt them apologize so Mari is really lucky. I wish I could say that they will all be a happy family from now on but I foresee some more drama between the in-laws, especially between Mari and Amelie.

    1. Thank you so much! It felt so good to give them both this resolution… Otherwise, you’re right — they both would have held on to that pain for the rear of their lives! As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I like to give my characters difficult lives XD But I feel like Mari and Diego have both grown so much and really “earned” this moment of happiness and closure in their lives ^_^

And as for future drama… Well, it IS me writing this thing… So there’s always drama on the horizon 😉 Hehehe Thank you so much for reading my story ❤

  9. I really love this story. This binge reading I’m doing right now is bittersweet because I’m almost all caught up.

Ooh, and I loved that you used the lantern tree. I had a spot on my lawn for that tree in my legacy, and they never used it, much to my chagrine.

    1. I’m so happy you’re loving it! It means a lot!!!! 🙂 And thanks, I love the lantern tree too! My friend and fellow SimLit author JoieWilder made the Rosebrook house for me and she put it there 🙂 When I saw it, I just knew that’s where Tobi and Colette’s wedding had to be!

    1. Haha honestly? I just made everyone sit down and then I had Tobi and Colette stand under the wedding arc and do some romantic interactions 😛 It wasn’t a “real” wedding (though they did really get married off-camera haha but when that wedding happened, everyone ended up awkwardly stnading haha)

    1. Thank you so much for reading my story! Especially THAT many chapter in just two days, wow!!!! You’re amazing!

Mari’s arc was definitely a painful one. And unfortunately you’ll need some more tissues for other things coming down the line… haha

Seriously though. Thank you again 🙂

  12. With forgiveness comes moving on for Mari. Still waiting to hear from Stefan wanting to know the truth of his father and his mothers many many affairs when he was born. Sadly Stefan is going to have to give up his fantasy of a loving father and realize his dad was a sperm donor. Maybe then he can accept that Jonas choose to love him and care for him and provide for him after all these years of rebuffing his overtures.Maybe then he can find closure.

    1. Yes this chapter was a big one for Mari! And yeah, Stefan may have to end up giving up his dream pretty quickly… :-/ Thank you for reading!
