7.8: Interlude – Legend

Phoenix’s fork made a soft clink as he set it on the table beside his plate. He took a long drink from his glass, finishing off the last of his milk before setting it back down as well. He did his best to suppress a wince of pain as he did so. His entire body still ached so much from his workouts with Bryce.

“Thanks, Rubi.” He smiled kindly at his stepmother as the dull ache continued. “That was great.”

On the other side of the table, he saw his father’s brow furrow almost instantly. “Are you feeling okay?” Erik asked his eldest son. “You barely touched your food.”

Phoenix shrugged. “Just not that hungry, I guess… But they really were great, Rubi. Promise.” He assured her.

There were very few things Phoenix would ever consider anywhere near the level of his Opa’s cooking. But Rubi’s blueberry pancakes were one of them. And, truth be told, he could have easily devoured the whole plate right then and there.

But you weren’t supposed to eat very much when you were trying to work out, right? Wouldn’t that like, defeat the whole purpose?

“Don’t worry about Phoenix, Mama.” Jasper addressed his mother before she’d even had a chance to reply. “He’s just on some kind of diet or whatever.”

Phoenix gave his brother’s leg a sharp kick under the table. “Shut up.” He hissed through clenched teeth. He’d already told Jasper he didn’t want to make a big deal about it in front of their parents.

As he’d feared, both adults exchanged a look. “Diet?” Rubi asked uncertainly.

Erik shook his head, looking almost amused. “You can’t be serious, buddy. I mean…” He gestured vaguely in Phoenix’s direction.

“It’s not a diet.” He insisted, still irritated at his brother. “I’m just trying to like, eat a little healthier, I guess? Like, I’ve been going to the gym with Bryce and stuff.” He shrugged. “I was actually gonna ask if you could give me a ride over there after breakfast…” Ugh. It felt so awkward asking now. Thanks, Jasper.

He watched his parents exchange yet another glance. Why did they have to keep doing that?

“Sure.” Erik spoke at last. “We don’t mind… But, uh… The gym, huh?”

Phoenix’s reply was much more defensive than he’d intended. “Yeah, the gym. What’s wrong with that?”

“Nothing at all. It’s just a little unexpected.” His father explained gently. “It’s great you wanna be healthier. I just never really thought that was something you were into…” Erik glanced toward his wife for a moment.

Rubi bit her lip uncertainly. “Phoenix, honey… This doesn’t have to do with Hallie, does it?”

In an instant, his cheeks were on fire. Beside him, he watched Jasper’s lips curl into a smirk. Phoenix gave him yet another kick in the shin before he could say anything.

“No.” He replied firmly, ignoring his brother’s wince of pain. “It doesn’t, okay?” Phoenix pushed his chair back from the table as he spoke. He tried his best to keep his voice calm. “So you’ll take me then?”

Rubi and Erik both nodded, their expressions impossible to read. “Just let us know when you wanna head over, okay?” His father asked at last.

Phoenix nodded, his irritation finally dying away. “Thanks, Papa.”

———————————————–

The large metal machine seemed to loom before him. Had it always looked so damn intimidating? It had all seemed so easy when he had Bryce there with him… Well, easy in theory. It was a little trickier once you added actual weights into the picture.

Alright… Phoenix told himself firmly. You can do this.

He’d gone to the gym with Bryce four times that week. He was practically a pro already! He’d be fine!

His eyes scanned the room as he finally took a seat at the huge weight machine. Even though it was a Saturday, he was surprised to find a few familiar faces he recognized from his trips earlier in the week.

As usual, none of them seemed very interested in looking back. But that was okay. One of these days, they would.

Phoenix reached up above his head, placing his arms against the padded panels. A slow, deep breath passed his lips as he closed his eyes, and tried to bring his arms together.

He winced sharply in pain as a burning ache ripped through his muscles. “Ah!” He lowered his arms quickly, eager to dispel the sharp pain. Shit… It never hurt this much before!

He’d been so sore all week. Maybe he’d been pushing himself too hard? Was five days in a row too much? But Bryce always seemed to manage it just fine… So why couldn’t he?

Maybe I should just try the treadmill… That would probably be easier, right? As long as he didn’t trip like he did the first time, anyway…

As Phoenix made his way to the nearest treadmill, he was pleasantly surprised to discover not one, but two girls jogging along at his side.

One was a girl he recognized from his science class. The other he’d only ever seen at the gym. They both had long dark hair and beautiful brown eyes. He felt his heart rate beginning to rise already, and it had nothing to do with exercise.

Phoenix mentally shook himself. Come on, dude. Just suck it up and say hi!

It was nearly five minutes before he worked up the courage to do so. He decided to take a chance on the girl to his right… It was too risky to try talking to someone from school. What if he made a total ass of himself? Then, there’d be no escape…

“Uh… Hi.” He gave the girl a smile, trying his best to not break his stride. Thankfully, the dull ache in his legs was much easier to deal with than the pain from before.

She returned the gesture somewhat uncomfortably. “Hey.” He could feel her eyes on him, sizing him up. Did she like what she saw?

“Great workout, huh?” Phoenix nodded down toward their feet. “I mean, the treadmills here are like… really nice.”

The girl just shrugged, her smile beginning to fade. “Sure, I guess?”

Shit, I suck at this. But at least she was talking to him? That was better than ignoring him, right?

“I think I’ve seen you around before… “ He continued. “You, um… You come here a lot, right?”

This time, she didn’t even look over at him. “Yup.”

“Cool. Uh, me too.” Phoenix smiled nervously. “I’m like, so into working out, y’know? It’s like, the best.” Oh my God what the fuck am I saying?

“Uh-huh…” She muttered. “Well, it was, um… nice talking to you.”

Phoenix’s heart sank as she watched her turn off the treadmill. He reached forward quickly to turn off his as well. The conveyor belt stopped suddenly, almost sending him flying. But Phoenix kept his footing.

“You too.” He said, stepping off his treadmill to stand beside her. “Maybe I’ll see you around again sometime?”

“Yeah, maybe.” The girl gave him an awkward nod, then began walking toward the locker rooms.

“My name’s Phoenix, by the way.” He added quickly, calling after her. “Phoenix Rosebrook.”

It was as though he’d flipped some sort of switch in her mind. She turned around to face him, and her eyes lit up instantly. For the first time since they’d begun talking, she seemed genuinely interested in something he’d said.

“Rosebrook?” She repeated almost breathlessly as she walked back toward him.

Phoenix smiled. His mother still published books under her maiden name… This girl was probably a fan. “Yeah.” He replied. “My Mama –”

“Like… Tobias Rosebrook?!”

His eyes widened. That definitely hadn’t been what he was expecting. “Oh! Um, yeah. He was like my great-great grandfather or something?” Why the heck was she so interested in someone who’d been dead for so long?

“Oh my God!” She squealed. “He was one of the greatest football players of all time! He’s such an inspiration…” The girl practically swooned.

Phoenix shrugged. “Yeah, I guess he was pretty good!”

“‘Pretty good’? Seriously?” She asked with a bright, musical laugh.

You idiot! This is your chance! “I – I mean, he was amazing! He inspires me too. Every day.” Phoenix tried his best to sound casual. “I’m so grateful to be related to him, y’know? Like, wow. What a legend.” Oh God, please believe me. Please believe me…

“Why didn’t you say anything before?” For the first time, the girl’s smile seemed genuine. “I mean, ‘I’m related to one of the greatest football players ever’ is probably what I’d lead with if I were you.” She teased. “That’s so awesome!”

“I just didn’t wanna like, brag or anything.” He replied with a small, forced laugh. “It’s a lot of pressure, I guess. Lots to live up to. But I’m trying my best.”

“Oh, so you play too?!”

“Y-yeah, a little.” Phoenix had never touched a football in his entire life.

“Awesome!”

He hesitated a moment before replying. This is it. A small voice in the back of his mind seemed to whisper. Go in for the kill! “Um, y’know, we still have a bunch of his old trophies and stuff at my house. If you ever wanted to come over and check them out or something?”

She bounced excitedly up and down for a moment. “Oh my God, really?!”

“Of course!”

In an instant, the girl had her cellphone in her hands. “What’s your number?” She asked excitedly. “I’ll add it to my phone.”

Phoenix was so stunned, it took him a moment to remember any of the digits. A girl was asking HIM for his number?! Holy shit… At last, he managed to remember his phone number. He repeated it twice for good measure.

“Perfect! I’ll text you so you have mine too.” She smiled sweetly at him. “I’m Amna, by the way. Amna Bhatt.”

Phoenix nearly lost himself in her beautiful brown eyes. “Well, it’s nice to meet you, Amna.” He replied softly.

She giggled. “Nice to meet you too, Felix.” With one last smile, Amna headed off toward the locker rooms at last.

“It’s… It’s Phoenix.” He muttered softly, knowing she could not hear.

But he wasn’t about to let some kind of silly mix-up bother him… It had worked! It actually worked!

Phoenix pulled his phone from his pocket, his fingers practically shaking.

  1. She best not hurt Phe…he’s had enough of being used so far. I sense it’s the same with this girl as she wasn’t interested until he mentioned he was a rosebrook and didn’t even bother to remember his name…

    1. Haha well in this case, Phee really isn’t much better… lying to try and impress her 😬 But yes, she doesn’t seem super duper interested in return… minus his last name! Haha

  2. Dark WitcHazard: Hahaha oh this is gonna be fun! 😈 Glad name dropping still works for Rosebrooks now let our little Pheonix begin to be caught in his web of lies!

Lover WitcHazard: Oh Tobias can’t believe that was four generations ago! Still hot though! I guess Pheonix is going the fake it til you make route cause that worked so well another heir we know!😜

Shipper WitcHazard: Love Tobias and his wife who makes escapes me starts with a C ends with a E forget all the letters in between! But he is one the reason Nooboos wakes up screaming about never getting Marklyne Nooboos so eh what are you going to do!

Emotional WitcHazard: Looks like Pheonix needs to chat with his Opa about lying to impress people! My guess after a this catastrophe in the making! Hopefully sooner but he’s a Rosebrook they only appreciate advice after they already messed up so I’m rooting for you Pheonix! Hope this doesn’t scar you too much!

Dark WitcHazard: Hehe scar you know cause Zayne has a scar and Pheonix has the potential of getting an emotional scar! Unlike Zayne’s who I guess had both CSU’s dog the fire and his parents being dead and all Hilarious 😂!

    Emotional WitcHazard: Who hurt you?😑

    1. Omg Emotional had me rolling with that last line 😂

Glad Tobi and Colette still have a few fans (besides Amna! Lol) despite the mess they helped make with Marklyne 😬

And LMAO yes, I’m sure Zayne could give some wonderful tips on how to effectively lie and be someone you’re not to get people to like you! 😂 How proud he must be of Phoenix for carrying on the proud tradition…. 😛

  3. Oh Phoenix…now you’ve done it. She is only interested because of poor dead Toby. But maybe it’s a way in except he’s already started to lie to her about football. We will see if she warms up to Phoenix or who she thinks Felix is! Felix. He didn’t even tell her his right name! 🙄

    1. Hahaha a girl gave him her NUMBER, Audrey! How could he possibly correct her about his name after that? 😉 😂

Definitely a way in… maybe a cheap and dishonest way in, but hey, Phee is desperate right now, poor dear 😂

  4. Yeah, no, this is gonna be fine. Absolutely fine. Juuuuust great. There’s no way this is gonna end horribly wrong, is it?

*Sits back and hands Tobi the popcorn while we eye Phoenix judgingly*

    1. Ha! Tobi watches with both dread and anticipation from the afterlife 😂 But I’m sure he’s at least grateful he still has some fans? 😉

But you’re right. This is all gonna be fine and not end horribly at all! 🙂

  5. Omg xD Phoenix is trapped in his own web of lies!
But what if he does discover a hidden talent for football? It was once in the family, after all…
Who am I trying to fool? It will be way more funny if he gets busted! =x

    1. Hehehehe hey, you never know though — Phoenix could totally have some kind of undiscovered talent! Maybe this is the start of great things for him?

(Lol how did I even type that with a straight face? 😂)

  6. Phoenix open your eyes you know she not interested in you, only your family ties.
Swallow his machine pride go up to one if the girls and ask her to train him would be better than what he did. Show his vulnerable maybe a better way. At least it’s not a lie.

    1. Great quote, and so fitting for Phoenix right now… your suggested approach would have been a much better one! But he’s all about trying to impress right now… :-/

      1. I see Phoenix, because of his body size, being good at martial arts, such as Aikido, Kung Fu, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.😉 My favorite Krav Maga,😱😂 just kidding, don’t want to kill your opponent.

  7. Okay…this is a lot like Zayne when he pretended to be a college student. And we all know how that went down.

    In flames.

So…poor Phoenix. He’s going to try to ride great x 3 grandpa’s football into that girl’s arms but …oh wait! Phoenix probably is a spaz and didn’t inherit any of Tobi’s genes (they’ve been diluted by a lot of geekdom. 😉 )

Hee hee! This is going to be funny…and hopefully, not sad! Aaaack!!!

    Liked by 4 people

    1. Yes, the deception of his grandfather is coming back full force. Yikes! 😬

And uh, you might be right about Tobi’s genes being too diluted now… whoops! 😂

Oh, Phoenix. What are we going to do with you???

  8. This was painful! I wanted to shake him through the screen to take care of his poor muscles… not eating enough, not taking rest days… 😭😭😭.

I think I smell a Renaissance Sim aspiration, no?

Was nice to hear about ol’ Tobias though ❤️ Definitely into this ride, wherever it ends up!

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Yeah, he’s really not taking care of himself the way he should when trying to get in shape! Poor kid has no idea what he’s doing! Ha! 😂

Hope you enjoy the rest of this crazy ride… hold on tight!

  9. Holy crap Phoenis, I understand it’s exciting/flattering to have that sort of attention from someone (and also, whaat at a young person being super into a football player from, like, 150 years ago?), but, dude, yikes; I’m going to need to cover my poor eyes and peek at the fallout from this through my fingers 😬

Eh, he’ll learn (possibly in glorious crash and burn Rosebrook fashion); I hope it only takes one lesson! Cuz we all know that sometimes this family seems to keep repeating the same patterns over and over again 😭

    We shall seeeeeee…

    1. Hahaha yeah this was just pure cringe. What is he doingggggg?? (As for Amna’s feelings toward Tobi, she’s not necessarily a huge fan of him in general (I’m sure she wouldn’t say his name if asked who her fave footballer is haha) but more what he represents. The name Tobias Rosebrook is pretty legendary around Windenburg for any football fan.)

And just one lesson? Ha! 😂 It would certainly be a Rosebrook first… but stranger things have happened? Hmm…

      Liked by 2 people

  10. Oh my god, I was cringing so hard the entire time. First, don’t hit on a girl while she’s trying to work out, ffs. Let her use the gym in peace. Second, kind of weird how this girl’s obsessed with this long-dead soccer player–how does she even know who he is? And Phoenix trying to claim a connection despite never playing….

I mean I get he’s a teenage boy looking for validation, but ouch, the secondhand embarrassment. I hope he finds something he genuinely does find fulfilling instead of keeping up this girl-attracting farce. Also is this gym exclusively for teenagers? LOL. Lots of fitness-minded teens!

    Liked by 5 people

    1. Haha Tobi is a total football legend around Windenburg… Kind of like if someone mentioned Babe Ruth. Everyone instantly knows who it is, especially someone who is a huge fan of the sport in general and still admires all the greats! I don’t think she’s actually obsessed with Tobi, just what he represents.

And yes, this chapter was meant to be a pure cringe-fest, so I’m glad I was successful 😉 He is getting in way over his head already, and it likely won’t get any better before it gets worse 😬

  11. There’s a lot of things in this chapter that make me nervous for Phoenix. Let’s hope he can keep a level head, though somehow I doubt it.

    Liked by 1 person

  12. Well this chapter was great. Some highlights were Jasper telling them about his diet and Amna calling him Felix. She’s clearly interested only in his name but who knows? It’s still early.
Phoenix is desperate to not be boring and is willing to change himself in a lot of ways, so this could be dangerous…
    Great chapter.

  13. Oh no, poor Felix. I mean Phoenix. Look, I’ll just give him my number, and it will be fine, okay? Well, except I’m not a teenager…we just won’t mention that part. What could possibly go wrong?

    1. Ha! Well… Fel… erm… Phoenix would be thrilled to get ANY girl’s number, regardless of age 😉 So I’m sure he’d appreciate it 😂😂😂

  14. I expected that to blow back at Phoenix. For most people taking their sport seriously they aren’t really in the mood to be flirted on while training. But that blew back a bit more than that.
While training doesn’t seem like something Phoenix seems to overly enjoy at the moment, it shouldn’t be too bad to him, but he needs to stay healthy by not overdoing it. If he is in pain like that he didn’t take any rest days as advised? Or simply overdid it with the weights? Whatever it is, pushing himself over the limit like that is not helpful.

But I guess that girl will be the end to all of his fitness related wishes. He really is desperate, but he should know that a relation that starts like this has no chance in hell. He can’t even really impress her when she comes over, but even if it’s not what he wants. Get over it soon.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh yes, Phoenix basically blew this in every way imaginable 😂 And also isn’t even being very safe in terms of how he’s doing his work outs… A total mess!

      Thank you for reading, Luna!

  15. Phoenix, Phoenix, Phoenix… This is gonna bite him in the ass. Once she finds out that he is nothing like Toby, his superstar relative, she will dump his ass on the spot, and possibly even spread rumors that he is not trustworthy and a liar. And then it will all be for nothing, all his hard work at changing who he really is and pretending to be someone else… wait… hm maybe that’s a good thing then? 😛 He needs a wake up call! Be yourself! There are no one just like him anywhere. He is special and he needs to realize that he is absolutely good enough just the way he is. He shouldn’t try to be something he is not. That is living a lie and no woman/girl wants to be lied to like that. And the truth does come out, no matter how long it might take. But i don’t believe he will be able to keep the show going for too long 😉

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Good point that Phoenix might end up earning a reputation as a liar if she finds out he isn’t telling the truth! 😬 Hopefully he can keep up the charade for a while… But you might be right that he can’t!

      We will see…

  16. Why do I have the feeling that the gym will be replaced with football from now on? What Phoenix is doing at the moment is going with trends, not finding himself. He’s lucky enough to be related with Tobi because apart from that he’s acted like the most awkward, dumb and annoying guy in the entire gym

    Liked by 1 person

    1. “he’s acted like the most awkward, dumb and annoying guy in the entire gym” YES. 😂 He’s super lucky that Amna noticed his last name… because otherwise he was so annoying and borderline creepy hitting on a girl at the gym. Yikes 😂 He is so lame.

And yes, he’s totally not actually finding himself. He’s finding… Felix?

  17. Oh goowwwwwd, Nooooo, Phennie! don’t do thiiiis! Gah! I knew he would try to pretend to be someone he wasn’t just to impress a girl, but, after some time, he will realize, he can’t be acting alll the time, and then he will end up as the ”fake” person…Althought, he does seem have the social skills of a potato ( and not a smart one) , sooooo,I kinda of can see from where he is coming, still wrong though. On another note, I really think Rubi and Arik should talk about Phoenix’s…origin’s,as, If I remember correctly, sometimes, tendencie’s for addiction’s run in family, so Phoenix might want to know that he has the ”genes” for that…

    Liked by 1 person

    1. “Social skills of a potato”… omg 😂 That may be the greatest description I’ve heard of Phoenix so far 😂😂😂😂

Yeah, addiction can be hereditary! I agree that it’s a discussion they should have with him, but I think it’s hard for them to bring it up :-/

And yeah, poor Phoenix is like, next-level desperate to get a girl! So pathetic, poor little bean.
