6.37: Interlude – Think

Protectors of the Universe: Episode 2. The title card flashed on the screen for a moment as the credits finally began to roll.

“Hey, that was almost as good as the first one!” Harper smiled, glancing at her friends to judge their reactions.

Beside her, Rylie shook her head. “Are you kidding? It was way too touchy-feely!” Her friend’s words were slightly slurred… Clearly the celebratory shots they’d done earlier were still taking their toll. And the beers they’d been throwing back all throughout the movie probably weren’t helping either…

Devin shrugged, replying much too loudly. “Baby Root was so freaking adorable though, wasn’t he?!” He’d always had a soft spot for the strange looking flower-creature ever since the first film.

Erik practically leapt to his feet before Rylie had a chance to reply. “Alright, we can debate about the movie later… It’s time for presents!” He cried excitedly.

Harper giggled to herself, relishing in the pleasant fuzziness that filled her head. Her boyfriend was definitely in rare form that day. The size of his pupils when she and her friends first arrived at his apartment had been a dead giveaway that he’d done a couple lines before they arrived. He’d been so upbeat and almost jittery the whole time… And that was so much better than the alternative.

Harper had felt his leg shaking nervously for about half the movie. And though she knew the drugs likely played a factor, she had a feeling he was genuinely excited about… something. Her present, maybe?

“Easy there.” Rylie laughed as she watched Erik race across the room on unsteady legs to retrieve the small pile of gifts. “Miss Money-Bags over here probably doesn’t give a shit about whatever crappy presents we got her.” She teased.

Devin nodded, smiling playfully. “Yeah, rolling in the dough now that you got that raise you’ve been talking about, huh?” His words slurred together just as Rylie’s had.

Harper fought as hard as she could to not let her smile falter. “Y-yeah.” She muttered weakly, her shame breaking through her drunken high for a moment. “About time too.”

How could she tell them that there had been no raise?

How could she tell him that she hadn’t even gotten a paycheck yesterday like she was supposed to?

Or that there weren’t going to be any more paychecks.

That two-faced bitch. Harper tried to hold back the sudden wave of anger that flooded her chest.

She should have known Nyla would do something like this. After all, she’d turned on her once before hadn’t she? Moving on, leaving Harper behind for other friends… And now ratting her out to her boss for stealing.

They’d gone back through the security footage. There was no sense in denying it.

It was so humiliating. Terrifying. Harper was just grateful they chose not to involve the police. All the items she’d stolen amounted to less than two hundred euros… And she was pretty sure that was the only thing that saved her. It made her sick to imagine what could have happened if she’d been caught taking something more valuable.

But the thought of being fired was enough to make her sick too. Now she was left without a job. No way to prove to her parents she could be responsible. No way to help Erik pay his dealer…

What am I gonna do?

She’d been trying so hard not to think about it. Last night had probably been the most difficult… Her family celebrated her and her grandmother’s birthdays together, just as they always did. But it was difficult to enjoy the delicious cake her father had baked for her, or focus on their annual viewing of Moonlight Massacre… Her mind was simply too far away, panicking about what she would do now.

I’ll figure something out. Harper kept telling herself. It’ll be fine. Maybe she’d just tell everyone she quit? That she’d grown tired of working down at the drugstore? Maybe Papa will let me work at his restaurant… Wash dishes or wait tables or something? She thought hopefully. Harper would talk to him about it tomorrow. For now, she needed to focus on celebrating her special day with her friends.

“Here we go.” Erik ended up dragging his small kitchen table into the living room, along with an extra folding chair. “Save my present for last though!” He added with a smile as he took a seat beside her on the couch.

Rylie jumped up to sit in the chair Erik had brought over, allowing Harper to slide closer to her small pile of gifts.

Shaking her head in amusement, Harper lifted the first present from the pile. It was from Devin. She peeled away the wrapping paper eagerly. Inside, she found a beautiful journal with a purple cover — her favorite color.

“I know how much you love writing.” He explained. “Even when we were little kids, you were always writing. And not just your stories… your diary too.” He rambled on for a bit more than he would have if he were sober. “And like, I figured your old notebook was probably getting pretty full by now, so…” Devin’s voice trailed off as he eyed her hopefully for a moment.

“I love it.” She smiled warmly at him. “It’s perfect, Dev. Thank you.”

He was right — her old journal was getting pretty full, and she’d already been itching for a new one. He knows me so well. The pleasant warmth in her cheeks seemed to spread into her chest at the thought. Harper’s smile widened for a moment as she reached for the next present in the pile.

Rylie rubbed her hands together gleefully. “Great! My turn.”

Harper found herself genuinely surprised when she ripped open the present and saw what was inside — a large photo album filled with pictures of herself and her two best friends. It even came with a stand to display it on. Harper’s smile grew wider and wider with each page she flipped through. It was almost hard to believe how may ridiculous selfies and silly photos the three of them had taken together since September.

“Wow… Who are you and what have you done with Rylie?” She teased. “This is so, like…” For a moment, her mind struggled to find the right word. “Sentimental.”

“I know. It’s disgusting isn’t it?” Rylie laughed. “I’m so ashamed of myself…” She paused for a moment, her expression suddenly more serious. “Just… with me and Sage going off on our little adventure or whatever, and Dev going to uni… I thought it’d be nice to make sure you don’t forget about us.” Rylie shrugged slightly.

“Are you kidding? How could I ever forget you guys?” Harper smiled at her friend. “But thank you. This is so awesome, Rylie!”

She propped up the photo album beside the journal, then turned back toward the pile of gifts. But Harper found that there was nothing left. Huh? Hadn’t Erik said he’d gotten her something? She glanced somewhat curiously at him for a moment.

“Okay, confession time — I totally didn’t wrap your gift.” Erik laughed softly as he rose to his feet, reaching into his pocket. “But close your eyes and hold out your hand.”

She gave him a slightly skeptical look, but did as he asked. “Okay.”

Erik pressed something cool and metal into her palm. It seemed to have something large and bulky attached to one end of it. The weight of the gift caught her off guard and it slipped from her hand, clanging as it hit the table in front of her.

Intrigued, Harper opened her eyes to see what it was.

“Oh my God… Is this…?”

Erik nodded. “One key to the apartment, one to the mailbox… I want you to move in with me, Harper.”

She jumped to her feet, squealing in excitement as she threw herself into his arms.

Laughing, he caught her as she buried her face in his neck. “I take it that’s a yes?” He asked.

“Of course!” Harper pressed her lips against his for a moment before finally pulling away from him.

“We’ll have to make sure your parents are cool with it though.” Erik’s voice was a bit nervous this time. “I was thinking maybe we could wait til we’re both done with our exams… Give us a little extra time to sweet talk ‘em?”

“Works for me.” Harper agreed. “Not that I really care what they say anyway… I’m an adult now. I can do what I want.”

He smiled softly. “True… but it’s still better to at least ask first?”

She rolled her eyes, but kept her smile. “I guess.” Harper paused for a moment. “Ahh! This is just so exciting! Isn’t this awesome, guys?” At last, she turned to face her friends.

Harper regretted doing so almost instantly.

Her heart sunk at the sight of their concerned faces. “What?” She asked, her tone almost accusing. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Rylie insisted. “Just… it’s a little surprising.” She muttered. Her tone was so unconvincing. Harper knew instantly that there was something Rylie wasn’t telling her.

“Well, we love each other, and Harper’s finally old enough to move out… Shouldn’t be too surprising.” Erik chuckled jovially.

Devin bit his lip. “Yeah, but like… I dunno. Maybe you should think about it a little more before you guys decide to live together?” His voice was very small.

Oh my fucking God! This again?! “Oh come on, Dev. You’ve gotta be kidding me!” Harper did nothing to hide her anger and frustration. “You sound like my Papa right now!”

“I’m not kidding.” He replied seriously, rising from his seat. “Just… Maybe this isn’t a good idea, Harper.”

“Look, we know it’s none of our business.” Rylie interjected hurriedly. “We just don’t want you rushing into anything… But if you’re happy, we’re happy too, Harper.” She assured her friend with a smile.

“Really? Because Dev sure doesn’t look too happy.” Harper narrowed her eyes at him. Her cheeks were burning again, just like before… But this time, the feeling was anything but pleasant.

Beside her, Erik forced a laugh. “Okay guys, we’ve all had way too much to drink. None of us are really thinking too straight right now… Let’s not ruin Harper’s birthday.”

She shook her head slowly. “No, I wanna hear what he was to say. Spit it out, Dev. What the hell’s your problem?!” She had a sinking feeling she already knew the answer. The words spilled from her lips before she’d even thought them through. But it was too late to take them back now.

Her friend looked so uncomfortable. “I’m just… worried, okay?” Devin muttered, uncertainly stepping closer as he spoke. “And I know Rylie is too. But… Erik’s right. This isn’t the right time to talk about this. Maybe another time. When we’re all a little more sober.” His laugh was just as forced as Erik’s had been.

Harper knew she should have dropped it. She knew she would have left it alone. Yet she couldn’t help it. Something made her keep pushing. “No, we can talk about it now.”

“Harper, I —”

“Are you jealous, huh? Is that what this is about?!” She demanded.

“WHAT?!”

“You’re jealous I’m moving in with Erik, aren’t you?!” She cried.

Devin’s chest was practically heaving with every breath he took, but he seemed unable to find his voice.

Harper felt her boyfriend’s hand on her arm. “Hey… You don’t mean that. She doesn’t know what she’s saying, Dev.” For a moment, Erik flicked his eyes toward Devin. “Maybe we should call it a night, okay?”

Rylie had now risen from her seat like the others. “Erik’s right… Why don’t we start heading back? I think we both gotta walk off these drinks anyway…”

Devin pulled away from his friend, glaring daggers at Harper. At last, he opened his mouth to speak.

“You’re really gonna make me say it, huh?” He snapped at her. She could still smell the alcohol on his breath, even from several feet away. “Your boyfriend’s a fucking junkie, Harper! THAT’S what my problem is!”

“What the FUCK did you just say?!” Erik closed the distance between himself and Devin so quickly, Harper almost couldn’t believe it.

Devin didn’t even flinch. “You know exactly what I said. We all know what’s going on here, so can we drop the fucking act?” For a moment, his expression softened slightly. “Look man, I’m sorry. I really like you, Erik. You know that. And I know you and Harper are crazy about each other. But until you cut this shit out, I can’t be okay with her living here. It’s dangerous and you know it. You know it!” His face had suddenly contorted into anger once more.

“Don’t you lecture me about what I know when you don’t know shit!” Erik shot back at him. “It’s none of your business where she lives, okay? You’re drunk off your ass right now, Dev. You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Yeah, I’m drunk. But so what? You’ve been high as a fucking kite since the moment we walked through the door! You don’t think we noticed? You think we’re that stupid?!”

“And you think I’m stupid enough to put Harper in danger?! You think I’d EVER do that?!”

“Yeah, I do. I think you already have!” Devin narrowed his eyes as he spoke. “So don’t stand there and talk about how much you love Harper if you’re gonna do this shit when she’s around!” He shook his head in disgust. “Or maybe you love the drugs more than you love her…”

Erik reached forward, shoving sharply against Devin’s chest. “Fuck you!”

“Don’t fucking touch me, you son of a –”

Let’s go, Dev!” Rylie stepped in front of him and placed her hand on his arm as she spoke, cutting off the insults he’d began shooting back at Erik. “There’s a time and a place, okay? And this isn’t it… We’ve all had too much to drink. We just need to calm down…”

Harper couldn’t believe what was happening. This was so much worse than she’d feared… They ruined it! They ruined everything!

At last, she managed to find her voice. “You’re a real piece of shit, Dev.” She muttered, blinking back tears. “Get the hell out of here!”

Her friend’s expression seemed to change in an instant at her words. The anger and frustration suddenly melted away, replaced with… sadness? Regret? Harper couldn’t quite find the right word. “Harper, look. I’m sorry. I just—”

“Yeah, party’s over, asshole.” Erik cut him off, his eyes narrowing as he pointed to the door. “Go.”

Rylie had to practically drag Devin out the door. “I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?” Her voice was pained as she called over her shoulder. “I’m so sorry, Harper…”

Yeah. She thought miserably. Me too.

  1. Wow! So much in this chapter I don’t know where to start!

Harper, just because you are a day older than yesterday, that doesn’t make you an adult. Honey, you have a long way to go before adult applies to you.

Devin was right and neither she nor Erik wanted to hear it. And in fact she blamed them for ruining her day. Gah…she just pushed them away. And she’s gonna ask Daddy to bail her out. Ha. I am sure he will.

    1. What he said was definitely true, though he probably could have chosen a calmer and less offensive way to say it haha

And yes… an adult, Harper is not — no matter what her birth certificate says!

  2. Stupid Harper. And stupid Erik. You are a junkie. So don’t upset when someone points out your issues. And you are stupid enough to put her in danger. This chapter is so aggravating! Nyla isn’t a bitch for ratting you and your crime spree out. I like Devin a lot more than Erik. Great chapter!

    1. I agree that he’s becoming a junkie, but I understand why he got mad. Devin didn’t calmly talk to him about his issues, he swore and got in his face and yelled haha What he said was true, but he probably didn’t say it in the best way!

Glad you enjoyed the chapter, thanks for reading! (And welcome to WordPress 😉)

  3. Poor Devin, he has a point but he should have waited a bit. 😦

Harik are both naive and something is going to happen if they don’t start using their brains and thinking about what will happen. The main culprit is Harper who isn’t the one taking drugs and is also the one PROVIDING drugs to Erik.

I KNEW she would lose her job and how is she going to explain to her parents about why she no longer has a job. She can’t tell them she got fired as there’s going to be questions. My bet is that Zayne gives her a job and then she steals from him to pay for Erik’s drugs.

Also, noticed Erik seemed defensive, looking forward to learning more about him. He seems to be becoming more immature from Harper’s influence as he’s not even thinking about it. (or he’s just always been this immature and we’re just learning more about his personality.

    1. Yup, who would have thought Harper would turn out to be so bad? Haha interesting prediction about her stealing from Zayne. Most definitely possible. Time will tell! 🙂

And yes, more about Erik to come!

  4. Hahahaha! This made me laugh. I’m sure there IS a bit of actual jealousy under the surface, of course. Mixed with a healthy dose of genuine concern. The alcohol didn’t help in the how and when he chose to express those concerns… Rylie knew better 😛

But then, Harper was a bitch and egged him on even after Erik and Rylie AND Devin himself tried to diffuse the situation….

  5. Isn’t Harper still in school? At least in my eyes, she’s not an adult until she leaves. What parents would be OK with their kid moving in with her older boyfriend while still in school? Let alone Hope and Zayne?

And Nyla isn’t a bitch. Stealing affects the employees at the store, and Nyla wouldn’t want herself and the other workers to suffer because Harper’s a klepto.

Devin could have been less harsh, but he was drunk and egged-on and probably a little jealous. Honestly, what would he see in Harper after this? She’s not being a good friend or a nice and sensible person.

    As always, I love Rylie.

    1. Harper is still in school for about another month or so story-time (until her exams are over). That’s actually a big part of why Erik thinks they should wait until their exams are over — so she’s all done with school before she moves in. And yes, because Hope and Zayne are way less likely to agree to it while she’s in school! Haha

Great question about what Devin would see in Harper. This chapter is definitely a turning point in their relationship, I fear. :-/ But hopefully they can at least somewhat recover from it…?

  6. Lots of maturity (not) found in anyone in this chapter, except for Rylie maybe…LOL. Harper is doing a good job by steering away from all and any good influences in her life.
    Sighs…
Also: this is why alcohol is bad for you! Don’t drink and argue, kids. xD

    1. Hahaha I actually just finished replying to a comment on the forums basically saying the same thing — Rylie is the most mature one out of this whole group!

Harper is a total mess. A frustrating mess who is admittedly very fun to write about, even though she drives me crazy 😛

Thanks so much for reading, as always! ❤ (And for coming out of hiding to comment hehe I always love it when that happens 😀 )

  7. They didn’t ruin your day Harper. You ruined your day. You keep poking the scab and picked it off. Devin is right. Erik has already put her in danger and he will do it again. He is a junkie.

  8. Harper didn’t get the raise?!

Seriously, I don’t know why either Devin or Rylie wants to spend time with Harper anymore. It must hurt to watch someone they care about make stupid decisions over and over, and there comes a point where you have to draw a line. I know they have a history, and they were all really close, but Harper keeps pushing them away and disregarding anything they say.

I don’t blame Devin for losing it. If I went to a party and my best friend declared she was moving in with her junkie boyfriend, I’d probably freak out right then too. (Then again, I have no desire to bang my best friend.) Well, everyone going their separate ways for college (or jobless habit-pushing fun) is probably best for everyone.

    …Except for Harper and Erik…

    1. I definitely think this chapter marks a turning point in her friendship with Rylie and Devin (especially Devin)… And not a good turning point :-/ You are very right — she’s pushing them away and I do think they’re really growing tired of it, especially after this.

I understand why Devin freaked out too, though the way he chose to do it probably wasn’t for the best… :-/

And yes! A little distance from Harper will be good for Rylie and Devin… But maybe not so much for the other two…

  9. This is kind of a vague overall feeling from this generation, not particularly this chapter but…

I feel bad for Harper. It’s really hard growing up with helicopter parents and wanting so badly to break out of their chains. I think a lot of her mistakes fall poorly onto Hope and Zayne. When parent’s tell children they can’t do something as teenagers it, without fail, just makes them want to do it more. Especially when it comes to boys, friends, and parties. Harper could handle herself better in many circumstances, yes, but I just see so much of myself at her age that I can’t help but relate to where she is coming from.

Anyways, Devin and Rylie need to get better poker faces.

    1. I’m glad you still have some sympathy for Harper. It’s a tough situation. Her parents helped put her on this awful path, but at the same time, her own choices have also led her here :-/

And yeah… they aren’t great at hiding their true feelings from her. And it kinda exploded in this chapter 😮

  10. You had me really worried there for a moment. Holy mackerel! I almost believed Erik managed to save some money to buy Harper a real present! Good thing his apartment came with a spare set of keyes…
Bridges were successfully burned and the dumb duo is on its own at last. About time they started selling the furniture in Erik’s apartment. The spice must flow!

    Liked by 5 people

    1. Haha I’m pretty sure he at least paid to get a copy of the keys? But yeah, he’s completely broke right now between the drugs and paying for rent and stuff. He’d probably have loved to get her a physical present, but he also was really excited at the idea of her living with him (even though we all know this is a huge, huge mistake!)

And sadly, selling the furniture might not be too far off at this point! LOL

  11. I was expecting Harper to be fired and not get raise. No, Nyla isn’t a two-faced bitch. Something HAD to be done. Otherwise, Harper will probably steal the whole store! That moment Harper was excited to be moving in with Erik and seeing Devin’s worried face, I said to myself, “Worried friend mode engaged!” I sincerely hate the idea that Harper and Erik are going to live together and Devin had the right to lash out at Erik. Erik IS a junkie and these two will suffer financially and lots of drugs will be involved. Devin is much better than him. Congratulations Harper, you ruined your own birthday and pushed away your friends. She might be eligible for the “Worst Friend” award.

Lot of questions regarding Harper being fired will arise and her stealing spree will arise.

    Liked by 5 people

    1. I definitely agree that “worst friend” is an award she would qualify for! She’s a huge mess and totally brought this on herself.

      Thank you for reading 🙂

  12. Why am I not surprised that Nyla ratted her out instead of talking to her? But I think we all saw that coming. I did not see that fight coming though…ouch

    Liked by 2 people

  13. HA! I knew she was getting fired. I know many people here are throwing stones at Nyla, but I don’t think that’s right. If there is a problem at work, and you know who’s behind, it would be in your best interest to tell lest the problem become your problem too (e.g. cutting hours to adjust for said problem)

“Or maybe you love the drugs more than you love her…” Ooooooooh! Say that, Devin lol. He’s so ballsy when he’s drunk lol. I love it.

I don’t think anyone was thinking in this chapter (except Rylie), but hopefully they’ve all been left with something to think about. Well, everyone except our blind princess of course. She’s such a joke and needs to be locked in a tower until she’s 30.

    Liked by 6 people

    1. Yeah, I think I’d probably have dons what Nyla did too actually hahaha And drunk/ballsy Devin was very fun! Hehehe

This experience was definitely eye opening in one way or another for 3/4 of our friends here… Love the tower idea. Ha!

  14. There has been so much tension inside of Rylie and Dev, no wonder that party wasn’t a great idea. And Harper knew that. She just ignored it away, and wanted everyone to keep their mouths shut while being fucking drunk just so she could have her celebration exactly the way she wanted with all three of them.
Dev definitely went too far, but he said so many truthful things it must have really hurt Erik. Throwing accusations around while being drunk is always a bad idea. But Erik was definitely really high this evening, and Harper found that to be great just so his mopey attitude from not having his drugs would have disturbed the celebration she wanted… and it is very naive to think no one would ever notice. Them moving together will be far worse than Harper imagines. Not only would there be no getting away from Eriks bad phases – even if she wants to, she wouldn’t just leave him. She will have to get used to surprise visits by his dealer, maybe even dragging her into crime to pay up for her boyfriend, or threatening her. She has already been in danger, but moving in with Erik will make things really dangerous. At the moment she has no more money to enable him, but his reaction might be far worse than she could think of. And asking her dad to get her a job after telling him she quit the old one for no reason at all isn’t sure to work.

Blaming Nyla is really really stupid at this moment. First off she doesn’t know what Nyla said or did, does she? What Nyla told could have been something vague nonspecific, like “maybe we should check the cameras”. She couldn’t let it slip completely, but maybe she didn’t call her out specifically. She even held it back until the storage count showed off how much was missed. Anyone would have checked the security cameras at that point, it would have happened without Nyla calling her out. And why should Nyla want to cover her, to maybe lose her job, reputation, clear record for something she would never agree to? Harper has been her friend, but that was years ago, and it didn’t seem like Harper looked out for Nyla and cared for her in that time. Harper is really lucky she got off without even the police getting involved (which is the standart procedure at most shops) and just has to pay back. Her boss is being really laid-back here.

And I am not sure why Rylie and Dev are buying her shit. Her being irrational is one thing, but she constantly tells them she doesn’t care about their opinion, that she doesn’t trust them, that she wants them to keep out of her private life. She drags them along in situations they don’t feel comfortable with and then complains if they tell so. They genuinely care for her, and while she doesn’t have to share their opinion they wouldn’t have gone so far if she actually listened and showed them that she cared and tried to be careful and sensible.

    1. Very insightful as always! 🙂 (Again, I always feel so bad that you leave these wonderfully long comments and then I suck at replying to them beyond saying “Yes, I agree!” and stuff lol)

I will say that you’re definitely right that Dev really hurt Erik. Its a tough situation because most of what Devin said was true, but he’s also supposed to be Erik’s friend, so screaming all those harsh truths in his face was probably not a good way to go about it. Rylie was really the most calm and mature person in this whole chapter (though of course she did agree with most of what Dev said)

I think you’re right about how dangerous moving in with Erik could be. And harper definitely doesn’t treat her friends very well. I think this chapter will actually be a turning point for their friendship… and not in a good way :-/

Thank you so much for reading ❤

Dark WitcHazard: Things are progressing nicely some friends they are how is she suppose to know not to mess with fire if everyone is too concerned to let her get burned! 😉 Also ofcourse he didn’t marry her the seed ain’t good enough for him to put a ring on it! Harper needs sex lessons Lover’s classes are available but they’re really expensive!

Lover WitcHazard: But Id give Harper the ruining your life discount!

Anti Shipper: I don’t like Harik but can I just say I hate people who have bad sense of timing! And especially hate people pick when they’re drunk to do something that makes a whole lot of since to do sober! Also why wait until you’re about to be Harper free for a couple of months to finally have this conversation! I respect Rylie for trying to be the mediator but if they both really care about her I don’t care if she never talks to you again they should have filled Hozay in on this situation with Erik because it’s their job to protect they’re daughter not yours you have no legal obligation to Harper saying you have to sit back and watch her make stupid decisions if she’s your friend then act like it damn it!

Dark WitcHazard: Somebody’s grouchy! Their just kids! Besides like you said Harper isn’t going to be their problem for awhile if at all after this little blow up so she’ll be all alone especially after Erik OD’s. Then she write all her sorrows away becoming a an amazing author!

    1. A nice range of perspectives from the court, as always! Lover is cracking me up though!

And yes… Awful timing on Devin’s part haha He said a lot of truths, but the way he did it and the time he chose to do it were really bad decisions that caused a lot of hurt for Erik and Harper. Interesting thought they should have gone to the parents! I feel like that is kind of what sets Rylie and Devin apart from Nyla, in a way!

      Thank you for reading 😀

  16. I have to admit this is the first chapter that sold me on Devin. He’s worried about his friend who he loves dearly, romantically or platonically. I also can’t help but think the plot twist might be that Nyla didn’t snitch on her, it’s Harper’s own incompetence. It’s real easy to get caught stealing from your own job.

I am real worried Harper’s going to start cutting off her friends. It’s hard enough being in a codependent relationship where you’re both addicts without losing all of your support systems. I gotta believe in my girl.

    1. I’m glad you still believe in Harper ❤ And that you warmed up to Devin in this one. I feel bad for him (though he definitely didn't express himself very well in this chapter… haha)

I don't think we'll ever know 100% for sure what went down with Nyla and the boss and Harper getting caught. But you make a great point that it might now have been her!

Thank you so much for reading! 🙂

  18. Girl need to grow up! You can’t live with your boyfriend, while you don’t have a job! He still needs the stuff to get loosey-goosey, and Harper cleary likes him while his using the drugs more than when he isn’t ( Idon’t know how Harper hadn’t put 2+2 together on this case…) I can see that she thinks that, as they attack Erick, they are also hurting her, as she also has a questionable addiction, buuut, the more she says ”Oh, it’s their fault! They don’t love me like Erick did!” the more I feel that when she has her fall, I’m gonna be like ” Erick’s love can’t save you NOW, hum, honey?” Karma ( I’m not even sure this is karma) will come at the speed of light. Also ( side note) I wonder if Harper is going to turn into an airplane parent when she has her own child, as Zayne had some bad experiences with him and was afraid Harper could get in those too, maybe because Harper had a lot worse than Zayne, she’s gonna be like: ” Lock him up in he bedroom! I was so stupid when I was teen, so you might also be!”

    1. Harper does need to grow up, but I wonder if she ever will… haha And I do think it’s Karma! She’s bringing a lot of this on herself… so bad!

Interesting thought for what kind of parent she might be. I guess we’ll see! 😉

  19. After living in a drug environment for years I was finally adopted by two wonderful people at the age of 13 her attitude makes me angry. She needs to stop using her disability to get out if trouble, blaming others for her mistakes, pushing ones who care for her away, and grow up taking responsibility for her actions.

    1. I’m so glad you got out of that terrible situation and have two wonderful parents now! ❤

Harper is most definitely bad news. She's immature and foolish and irresponsible and basically a mess. Hopefully there will be a light at the end of the tunnel for her… But for now, I fear things will only get worse before they get better :-/

      1. I am 15 and more mature. Maybe it is because I was born into the environment she is moving in or getting herself into.

  20. I wondered when this point would come. Seems fitting that it came on Harper’s birthday, sometimes “slap in the face” truths are the best things to happen to people in the long run. That seem particularly true with Harper, though she’s not ready to admit her faults yet: getting fired (because of her stealing), confrontatation with a trusted best friend who she recognizes (deep down) is much smarter than she is and cares about her, obvious trouble on the near horizon, etc. She will fall hard, and probably fall alone, but that could be just the thing she needs, like Zayne. That’s how he found his inner strength, that seems to be the way with most of her relatives.

However, she could also go the opposite way, too, and never find her “inner strength”. She could be a complete narcissist, blaming everyone for everything, except themselves. Helicopter parents or not, all her choices have always been her own. She’s always demonstrated a little narcissistic behavior. Using her hearing aid as an excuse to get out of everything because of not liking school is the perfect example of the beginning of present day Harper.

    Which way will she go…

    1. Great analysis! And definitely more than one day things can go from here for Harper… Hopefully it’s the first option!

And yes, sometimes those harsh truths are needed! But I wonder if it’ll really manage to get through to her… Thanks for reading!

  21. I saw so much of myself in Harper, before she got mixed up with drugs and petty crime. It makes it so much saddder for me to see her go down this rabbit hole – I feel like her third parent! I wish I could save her from this bad situation, but I suspect she wouldn’t let me, even if I could. I guess the only person who can save Harper is Harper, once she realizes she needs to be saved.

  22. I think Harper really wanted Devin to say it. Her continuous shouting asking what’s the problem seems like a cry from deeper down. She wanted it to be said and for Erik to hear it as well. It’s like she wanted to face reality but still can’t handle it, and her reaction to what Devin said clearly shows she is not ready for that life. I almost feel, sorry for her cause her little teenage brain is fooling her making her think she is ready for a step as major as this one.

Also kudos to you for incredibly bringing out the emotion in this chapter and truly making it feel alive.

    1. I love this analysis! And it’s very possible. Harper represses a lot… even things that don’t come out in her journals. She’s in heavy denial haha

I’m glad you connected to the emotions in this one! Thank you so much for reading ❤️

  23. Ooh that last point is a good one, Miscil. Harper is probably one of our most untrustworthy narrators. Probably worse than Mari who at least scratched it out. But for how much she’s in her head she doesn’t really take a good look around. Everyone knows she’s bi before she finally admits. She knows stealing is a problem, but can’t help it and she knows drugs is a major problem. She clearly did know Devin wanted to say it and egged it in so it could be said. Now will she think in the words? Probably not. Dies she maybe hope Erik will? I’m guessing that might be why she wanted him to say it. Cuz she can’t because she already told Erik it was okay and she didn’t judge him. So she threw Devin under the bus. If course, the thoughts are pretty deep down because it def hurt her to hear them badmouth her sweet lovable bf.

  24. She pushed him, forced him to speak, then she’s mad at what he had to say?! Quite the destructive pattern our girl has gotten into.

Erik had seemed sweet and apologetic and dong his best to do right by Harper up to this point. But his naivete about how her living with him exposes her to more than he’d like her to see is some BS.

I can’t see a calm resolution to this turmoil. OMG, can you weave a twisted tale! Lemme go pop some popcorn for whatever comes next!

    1. Yeah, she totally egged him on and brought this upon herself! This chapter made me so mad when I was writing it hahaha.

And Erik is still in so much denial himself. He believes he has the situation under control and that it’s not dangerous…

      Enjoy your popcorn 😉 hahahahha

    FUCK

And that lovely four letter word repeated in my head through out the rest of this chapter.
