8.8: Trap

“Okay, so… that one’s Orion, right?” Emberlynn pointed up, tracing her finger along the three stars of its ‘belt’. “I think I’m getting the hang of this…”

Beside her, she could see Mason nodding eagerly. “Brilliant! You’re a natural.”

She chuckled softly. “Not gonna say ‘no’ to the brilliant part, but I’m not so sure I’m a ‘natural’… How’d you get so good at all this nature crap?” Emberlynn asked, pushing herself back to her feet. Her back was starting to hurt from lying on the hard ground.

She never would have guessed that the cute kid in the knight costume would wind up being so amazing when it came to identifying plants and insects, or naming the constellations. It was impressive. Bizarre, but impressive.

Mason shrugged as he joined her on his feet as well. “Mostly camping, I guess. Traveling around with my dad. Taking pictures of everything… Wish I had a camera good enough for some constellation shots though…” He added almost dreamily. “They look so much clearer here. I don’t know why… But it’s different back home.”

Her heart sank slightly at his mention of ‘home’. “I wish you didn’t have to go back so soon.” Emberlynn sighed softly as she lowered herself onto a nearby bench.

“Me too.” He agreed. “It sucks.”

“I’m really gonna miss you. What ever will I do without my robot in shining armor?” Emberlynn half-teased.

Mason rolled his eyes. “Have you looked in a mirror lately? I’m sure you’ll have a whole line of robots waiting to swoop in once I’m gone.” He assured her.

“Ha! Yeah right. We’ll see about that…”

Neither of them spoke for a few moments then. Emberlynn found herself gazing back up at the clear night sky. It was such a gorgeous night.

“Hey, Emberlynn?” Mason’s soft voice broke the silence. “Um… just… just so we’re on the same page about all this… Once I go back home, we’re still friends, right? But like, just friends?” He was eyeing her almost hopefully as he spoke.

Emberlynn laughed softly, nodding. “Just friends. Don’t worry.”

“Oh, thank God!” Mason chuckled in visible relief. “Don’t get me wrong — I really like you, Emberlynn. You’re awesome. But I just can’t do the long-distance thing. And I was kind of afraid you were expecting this to turn into something like that.” He admitted. “I just had to be sure.”

“Nah, you’re off the hook. Honestly I’m not really into the whole ‘relationship’ thing anyway, long-distance or not.” She explained.

“Well, to be fair, you’ve never really had one before, right?”

“Nope.” Emberlynn admitted. “And I don’t ever want to.”

Mason appeared surprised. “Really? Never?”

She sighed softly before speaking again. “Mason, they’re a trap.”

“Yeah, okay Admiral Ackbar.”

“I’m serious!” Emberlynn shook her head. “Look, do you know how many dumb girls at school I’ve seen crying their eyes out because some guy broke their heart? Or guys doing the exactly same thing but trying to be all tough and hide it?”

Mason shrugged. “Probably loads. It’s the same at my school.”

“Or what about that statistic that like half of marriages end in divorce? I mean, your parents are divorced, aren’t they?”

Mason nodded.

“And I’ve told you about my parents, haven’t I?” She continued, feeling herself get more and more wound up the more she spoke. It was so rare for her to speak aloud about these fears, so now that she finally had the chance, she was getting a bit carried away. “That’s even WORSE than them being divorced. They’re miserable.”

“I know. And that totally sucks. But that doesn’t mean –”

“They all fell for it!” Emberlynn cried, feeling her cheeks grow warm with some sort of emotion she could not quite name. “They fell for the trap! They let themselves get attached and fall in love and blah-blah-blah… and look what happened! All they did was get hurt. Why would anyone ever wanna do that to themselves?”

Mason did not immediately reply. Emberlynn took the silence as an opportunity to steady her breathing and try to calm herself. Over their past three weeks together, she’d opened up to Mason in ways she never had before… physically, at least.

But now she’d done so emotionally as well. Emberlynn had never shared those feelings with anyone but Zelda before. She felt almost embarrassed at finally having done so.

“I get it.” Mason replied at last. “I get what you’re saying.”

“You do?”

He nodded. “Relationships are risky. It’s just… It’s not like every single relationship is doomed to fail either, you know? There are plenty of people out there who are perfectly happy together. You must know that…”

“I do.” Emberlynn acknowledged. “I’m not an idiot. There are plenty of happy people out there.” She agreed. “But they all took a huge risk, and the odds were stacked against them… they just got lucky.”

Mason’s brow furrowed for a moment. “Well, you could get lucky someday too.”

Emberlynn shook her head. “Not a risk I’m willing to take.”

“Seriously? You’re telling me the girl who’s been sneaking out almost every night to go mess around with some guy she barely knows isn’t willing to take a risk?”

She shook her head yet again. “Not that one.”

Mason sighed. “Fair enough, I guess. But there’s gonna be a ton of disappointed robots in shining armor out there.”

A small laugh passed her lips. “Is that so?”

“Well, yeah. They’re all gonna want the chance to come in and sweep you off your feet.”

“I never said they couldn’t do a little sweeping.” Emberlynn clarified, her lips curling into a smile. “Long as they put me back on my feet again when they’re done.”

Mason chuckled softly, but said nothing.

Ember, meanwhile, stifled back a yawn. It had to be nearly three in the morning by now. But if she went back home, that meant it would really be over. And she wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye to her friend. Not yet.

“So, uh, Emberlynn, I was thinking…” At last, Mason spoke yet again. “Tonight’s my last night here.”

“I know.” She replied sadly.

“So it’s kind of our last chance, isn’t it? To… To do… stuff.”

Emberlynn felt her breath catch in her throat. Was this going where she thought it was?

“I mean, if you don’t want to, it’s okay.” Mason continued awkwardly. “But I, uh, came prepared, if you know what I mean?” He patted his pocked for a moment. “Like… Like if we wanted to… y’know.

She giggled softly, amused by his embarrassment. “Are you asking me if I wanna have sex?”

He nodded, his cheeks visibly reddening a bit, even in the moonlight. “Yeah. And it’s okay if you don’t want to. It’s just, they always say your first time’s supposed to be with somebody ‘special’ or something. And you are special, Emberlynn. To me.” Mason stumbled over his words as he spoke.

Emberlynn raised an eyebrow at him. “Special, huh?”

“Shit, that sounded way too sappy and romantic. I didn’t mean it like that! I was serious when I said we’re just friends. But you’re still important to me.” He explained quickly. “And like, if sex is really as big a deal as everybody says, then I think I want my first time to be with somebody important. Not some high school girlfriend who’s probably gonna dump my ass or something. I don’t want it to be with somebody I’m gonna regret. So… So, like…”

Emberlynn put up a hand, silencing him. It had been cute and sweet listening to his little speech, but she knew it was time to finally put the poor guy out of his misery.

“Sure.” She said happily. “Let’s do it.”

His eyes lit up. “Really?!”

Emberlynn nodded. “I get what you’re saying about ‘somebody special’. And I guess I feel pretty much the same.” She explained with a small shrug. “If it’s really that big of a deal, then you’re the right person to do it with.” She assured him. “But…”

“But what?”

She couldn’t help but laugh as she replied. “Well, we’ve already had our hands and mouths like, everywhere… So is this really gonna be a bigger deal than any of that?

Mason quickly joined in her laughter. “Good question. I dunno… But… I guess we can find out together?” He suggested with a smile.

Emberlynn’s answer was a kiss.

  1. Good on Mason for actually flat out asking! With WORDS!

Unfortunately, that means he is disqualified from being a Rosebrook because he has the slightest glimmer of good sense when it comes to communication. *sigh* a shame. I liked him.

    1. Lol! Mason definitely communicated pretty well here… and so did Emberlynn! A Rosebrook rarity 😂

I liked Mason too! It’s possible we’ll see him again, but it’ll be hard now that he’s going back to England :-/ Emberlynn was serious about seeing him as a close and important friend though, so at the very least, I think she’ll keep her word and stay in touch!

  2. THIS IS NOT OKAY SHE STILL IS 2 YOUNG! Ohhh boi, they are going to regret doing that…The pandora box is fully opened now!I hope she doesn’t go Mari-like when it comes to relationships…

I knew it! Her parents issues affect her even to this day. They should have divorced already, and I hope Ember finally shares her problems with her parents, so they can see that no, their marriage isn’t helping anyone on this scenario.

Poor Ember is most likely going to fall in love and repress it. I mean, you don’t choose if you fall in love with someone or not,it just happens.

I have to admit I googled the ”Admiral Ackbar” name, only to confirm it was indeed what I thought it was. 😛

And yes, Ember, sex is kinda of a big deal.( Kids this days….)

    1. Haha hopefully no regret from either of them! And don’t worry, I’m not sure anyone will ever reach Mari levels again 😂

Her parents have definitely had an impact on her and how she views relationships 😬 Could cause trouble someday… but hopefully not!

And LOL yes, lame Star Wars reference in there 😂😂😂 Mason and Ember both still have their geeky streaks 😛

    2. It’s so sad that PheeGi’s marital issues are having a detrimental impact on Emberlynn’s views on life. But anyway, you know what they say, children are never that good at listening to their elders, but they don’t fail to imitate them.

I’m getting throwbacks to Gen 3: Tobi and Colette ❤️😭

By the way, I started my new Simlit. If you want to check it out, I’d love to know what you think! You can find it here at: https://simtroverted04.wordpress.com/2018/12/26/rotations-the-fyres/

      1. Congrats on starting a new story! Is it going to be a neighborhood rotation? (I’m going off the title at this point so I could be wrong! Haha But those can be really fun! ^_^ )

And yes, PheeGi’s issues have really taken a toll :-/ I think parents often don’t realize just how much their kids notice 😬

And yes, teenagers banging for the first time, outdoors 😂 Definitely a throwback! But hopefully with a different outcome… 😬😬😬😬

    1. Yeah, he’s sweet and fun! Too bad he lives so far away! 😦

Hopefully there will be other boys in Emberlynn’s future for you to get attached to…? 😈 We shall see…

  3. That was bittersweet. They are too young, but since they both want to, and actually discussed it….and he asked like a gentleman even (Mason 😍😍😍) …..at least they know coming out of it that there will not be any expectations of a committed relationship.

I don’t think they really get how big of a deal “going all the way” is? Much different than fooling around. But she is open about it so….we will see.

It’s sad that Phee trying to domthe right thing has caused her to decide she will never fall in love…like Sourocha said, you don’t get to pick and it just happens. She will no doubt deny it for a long time. 😢😢😢

Goodbye Mason 😭😭😭….hope to see you again in the future…. may the force be with you….(okay lame)

    1. Yeah they may be young, but they actually are handling this fairly maturely… with communication, even! 😱 I think they’ll be okay.

We’ll see Emberlynn’s thoughts on finally “doing it” in the next chapter…

And yes, Phee’s attempts have backfired so bad 😦

And I’ll miss Mason too 😭 He appreciates your Star Wars reference though! 😉 (we know he’s a fan! 😛 )

  4. Emberlynn, I think you’re gonna fall hard. For someone. The more you protest, the harder you’ll fall. 🤣😝😆

That speech of Masons…omg. Awkward, but it worked! Omg…

But there are worse places to lose her v card, I guess. Now she’ll be ready to break hearts in high school!

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Hehehe the lady doth protest too much? 😛 Maybe… time will tell 😉

Poor Mason. So freaking awkward but he’s sweet and sincere ❤️ I can assure you Emberlynn will look back on her time with him fondly. And yes, not a bad place! Under the beautiful night sky with a sweet kid ❤️

School starts soon… we’ll see how it goes 😉 😈

  5. At least her first time is with someone who cares for her and who she cares about. She is still to young. When Mason leaves she is going to go wild. I have a bad feeling she is going to be the girl boys go to for sex. Does she really want to be the school or town tramp? Sooner or later her parents will find out. It can not stay a secret from her brother, either. He will hear rumors and wind up getting in fights because of her. She is too young. What if she winds up pregnant by Mason? He will be gone. The baby want know his or her father. This is a mess.

    1. Yes, it wasn’t with some random guy, at least 🙂 As for what’s ahead for Emberlynn and any guys she might meet, we’ll see! She goes back to school in just two chapters!

And hopefully they used that condom effectively 😬

  6. I kind of love Ember and how she knows exactly what she wants, which is a lot of sleeping around with guys who are or are not that special. Girl, go for it! And good on Mason for bringing protection with him… I wonder what’s going to happen next time they see each other and Mason is happily married/dating somebody and how Ember will react to that, or how she’ll react to all of her friends coupling up… but that’ll come later, I suppose. For now I’m just excited to see who Ember starts to wine and dine next!

    1. I’m glad you’re loving Ember! I really adore her. She’s so fun to write, and feels pretty different than most of the heirs before her!

Mason was no fool here, thankfully! And as for the future… well like you said, that will come later. We’ll see! 😉

Ember goes back to school in two chapters. Lots of boys there. Hmm…: 🤔

  7. Nooboos WitcHazard: Dang it he’s to sweet and considerate to forget a condom tsk!

Lover WitcHazard: I’m glad they both consented! Mason was a real gentleman about this! Well now the the first times out of the way now it’s time to find a partner who is sexually compatible! On to the next fellow or gal!😘

Shipper WitcHazard: Well there goes the speed boat! Let’s hope the next one has a longer run and maybe gets upgraded to a actual ship! But I feel a romantic interests montage coming on! And I don’t mind too much!

Dark WitcHazard: Lame Mason it’s the last day before you leave you really think she was going to say no! It’s cool you’ll get a nice shelf for first time in Emberlynn’s heart but it ain’t gonna have a glass and gold case or anything! Unlike some guy she met at a wedding which on a unconventional level helped you get this lay!😜

    1. Ha! Omg good point… meeting Xander kind of sort of helped this happen, in a convoluted way 😂 especially allowing for the knight/robot confusion, which helped fan Mason and Ember’s spark a bit 🤔

Sorry that he was so considerate 😂 And yes, he gets a nice little shelf, but there could be room for bigger trophies later 😉 Still, can confirm that Emberlynn will have no regrets and always look back on her speed boat adventure with Mason quite fondly 😉 ❤️

We shall see what lays ahead for her!

  8. I ship Maserlynn 🥰 even if they don’t! Haha! It’s beginning to dawn on me that Mason might be my creation..? If he is, you’re writing him better than I ever imagined. Love that kid! Love Emberlynn too, she’s spunky!

    1. Aww I’m glad you love her (and are having fun shopping 😀 ) Mason might be yours! I’m not sure who made him. His original name was Finn Mason (but I switched the first and last names because Ivy’s brother was named Finn) and he was a YA but I aged him down (and tried my best to keep his backstory of loving travel, nature, and photography!) If he was yours, thank you! I loved writing him ❤️

    1. Ha! Okay, I’ll admit I don’t have the best record in that department 😂 But you never know! 😛

And I’m really glad you love Emberlynn so much! I really love her too. She’s so different from the other heirs and I’m having a lot of fun with her already! ^_^

  9. I was late to the V-Card losing party, myself (19/20). However, I’ve nothing against teens doing the dirty as long as they’re using protection, there’s consent and they respect each other.
I think sex is a big deal, but at the end of the day it’s subjective. If someone doesn’t see it that way, then I won’t hound them about it. The last thing I want to do is make a teenager even more ashamed of their body.

I find it’s easier as an adult or a parent rather to disconnect from these feelings though. You just gotta remember what it was like when you were young, exploring your sexuality and the frustrations of being a hormonal teenager. Not all experiences are good but it’s learning from them that makes us.

  10. Okay, I am totally LOVING Emberlynn as an heir so far. She may be coming close to my all-time fav Joce, actually 😉

I chuckled at the sex scene. I’m also very happy that neither of them seemed to regret it, even though it wasn’t as awesome as they thought. Practice makes perfect, kids!

Also, a part of me hopes Ember finds someone one day who will make her have faith in love again…

    1. I’m so glad you’re loving her! I really love her too 🙂

And lmao yes, they had some awkward teenage sex that wasn’t very good, but definitely no regrets! Emberlynn will always look back fondly on the memory of losing her virginity to Mason 🙂

And as for believing in love again someday… we can hope!!!!
