7.5: Don’t Fit

It was the little twerp’s birthday yesterday. We had a big dinner with one of Opi’s epic cakes to celebrate (thankfully the big sleepover isn’t til this weekend when I’m at Papa’s. Not sad to be missing that one…)

Anyway, I can’t believe she’s eight years old already… How the hell did that even happen?!

It was so freaking long ago, but I still remember how excited I was before she was born… And how disappointed I felt after too.

Don’t get me wrong — I love that little brat. A lot. And I’ve gotten over all that stupid little-kid whining I put Mama and Dev through back then.

But there are still ‘moments’, I guess. Like, flashes almost? I feel them with Jasper sometimes too.

And I definitely felt it at Lila’s party.

I know it’s dumb. But seeing her getting to celebrate her birthday with both her parents…

Stuff like that always gets to me the most.

For like, literally my whole life, I’ve always gotten two of everything. Two birthday parties. Two Christmases. Two Easters. And that probably sounds awesome, right?

I mean, I still remember when I was turning twelve, and Jasper actually threw a little tantrum about how unfair it was that I get ‘two birthdays’. I still roll my eyes just thinking about it.

Having parents who aren’t together already sucks enough. And it’s like a hundred times worse when your parents have their own families too. Families you’ll never completely be a part of.

I love Rubi and Dev a lot. They’re basically like a second Mama and Papa to me. And obviously I love Jasper and Lila too. And my Mama and Papa. Duh.

But sometimes it still feels like I’m this weird, extra person who doesn’t really belong. I don’t even have the same last name as any of them. And that just kinda shoves in my face that like… I don’t really “fit” into either family, I guess? Not completely anyway.

And now that I think about it, that’s kinda how everything is for me… I just don’t fit anywhere.

It kinda makes me think about what Hallie said… About how ‘boring’ I am, or whatever.

Most people have a ‘thing’, right? Like, something they’re really good at, or really into. Something that makes them interesting. Like Mama’s writing. Or Papa’s computer stuff. Or Dev’s art. Or Rubi’s gardening.

My friends all have stuff like that too. Like Bryce. He’s a total jock. Any sport you can think of, he’s a freaking beast at. Everyone knows it… And they all love it too. I don’t know how Tam and I lucked out having him as our friend. He could hang out with like, anybody he wants to. And all the girls at school practically fall all over themselves whenever he walks by.

Thankfully Meg’s a pro at putting up with it. She’s always been great about handling stuff like that. She’s been head of the school theater company for years, so she’s got a pretty killer poker face. Everyone at school knows she’s the best actress around… Bryce likes to tease her sometimes and call her the school ‘Drama Queen’ (thankfully it’s just the onstage kind, at least).

And we all know what Tam’s ‘thing’ is, obviously. He’s totally into comic books and D&D and all that sorta stuff… way more than even I am. And like, he’s definitely not nearly as popular as Meg or Bryce are… But I swear, there are moments where it’s almost like people kinda respect the fact that he’s such a geek, if that makes any sense. Like, he’s just so into it. It’s like they admire his… I dunno, passion or something? I know Jasper definitely does. And I’m sure he’s not alone.

And then there’s me.

It’s like Hallie said… I’m boring. There’s nothing like, interesting about me. I don’t fit into a ‘group’ or whatever like the rest of them do.

Like, not to brag or anything, but my grades are pretty freaking awesome. I don’t even have to try that hard. It just kinda comes naturally, I guess? But I don’t feel like that’s ‘who I am’, or anything. It’s not like I’m on the math team or in the science club. I’m just good at school.

And I love watching sports, especially basketball. Papa and I even play some one-on-one every once in a while for fun (or two-on-one when we drag Jasper into it). But I’m not on a team or anything. I’m not some popular jock like Bryce is. I just like sports.

Or like, Rylie started teaching me how to play guitar a few years ago. I’m decent at a few songs, and I have fun messing around with it every once in a while… But it’s just some weird little hobby. It’s not my ‘thing’.

And honestly, neither is being a geek, really? It’s probably the thing I come closest to fitting into, I guess. But like, I don’t DM my own game group, or go to cosplay conventions, or work down at the comic book store after school. Not like Tam.

It’s like I’m floating in this weird, boring gray area in the middle of it all. I’m stuck in-between.

I’m not a Shimada, but I’m not a Parris either. I’m a Rosebrook.

And I’m not a nerd, or a jock, or a musician… Barely even a geek, really.

So… what am I?

I dunno. Maybe Hallie’s right. Maybe I really am just some boring loser.

But you know what?

Maybe I don’t have to be one anymore.

Wanted to let everyone know I finally updated the Family Tree page (for the first time sine Harper was a toddler! Haha Better late than never though, right? 😉 )

  1. Aw, poor Phoenix. I totally get where he’s coming from. Here’s hoping that the thing he chooses is to become a teenage runaway! (I’m kidding, but it would be fun if he started lifting hubcaps and carrying switchblades around… On an unrelated note I’m reading “The Outsiders” with one of my classes, so…)

I’m sure he’ll find something where he’ll fit. But these awkward teenage years are the WORST. And unfortunately the 20’s aren’t much easier. Maybe he’ll become a world traveler? He’s got family ties all over the world, even if they’re super distant family ties at this point.

    1. LMAO that would certainly be an interesting path for Phoenix to take 😂 You never know! Right now he definitely seems determined to try and be “interesting”, so…

And interesting point about those family ties! Maybe a change of scenery could be good for him, someday… we’ll see!

  2. Poor Phoenix. He really feels like an outcast. Hallie did a number on him for sure.👿 Mean Hallie! These Rosebrook heirs don’t need any help with self esteem issues!

I hadn’t even thought about his last name being different. When Harper had him she didn’t give him Erik’s last name. So now he even has a different name than everyone else. I can see why he thinks he’s not anything special. But that last line scares me…what’s he got up his sleeve to make himself special? He already IS special. She just did a number on him.

    1. She definitely did a number on the kid’s ego haha We will see on Saturday what his plan is… 😈

And yeah, the last name thing is pretty interesting! I didn’t even realize til recently that he’s the only other Rosebrook besides Hope and Zayne! 😮

  3. I read this line: “it’s like I’m floating in this weird, boring gay area in the middle of it all.”
    And I about died.
And then I realized it was “grey” not “gay” aww.

I’m super curious to see what he’s got up his sleeve in terms of solving this dilemma!

Been there, Pho; think many of us have! Especially when you come from a split family 😬 and you haven’t found your passion yet!

I can’t unsee the cat bloopers at that birthday party tho 😭

    1. LMAO now that would be a twist 😂

Saturday’s chapter will reveal to us Phoenix’s, uh, *brilliant* plan 😉

And yeah… it’s hard right now for poor Phee. All that teenage angst, combined with a tricky family situation and lack of direction…

AND a cat ruining Lila’s birthday by eating the cake! Dang 😭

  4. Little bit of mixture of everything, likes a lot of stuff, but has not found something he excel at. It will come in time. People that are really smart sometime have trouble fitting in one particular group. I don’t have that problem because I am just me.
As always, you make your writing come to life.

    1. Yeah, Phoenix is a little bit of many things! And unfortunately he doesn’t seem to realize that that’s okay! 😦 Poor kid

And you are way too kind. Thank you for the sweet words about my writing ❤️

  5. I gotta say, so far Phoenix is the Rosebrook I relate to the most lol. It sucks that the whole “boring” thing got stuck in his head, though. Just because he’s not hyperfocused on one thing doesn’t make him boring, and it’s totally okay not to have defined himself yet. I hope that he doesn’t make himself miserable trying to get a “thing”.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Aww I’m glad you can relate! I love writing him. He’s so different from all the Rosebrooks before him!

And, well, hopefully Phee won’t make himself miserable. But he definitely seems determined to change… Hopefully whatever plan he has up his sleeve won’t backfire! 😬

    1. I love that metaphor! ❤️❤️ And Phoenix most definitely appreciates your grandma advice! Whether or not he’ll listen is another story though…

  6. My poor cupcake ❤ I'm sure he'll find 'his thing' eventually, but I totally get feeling like this sucks.

I just hope he doesn't do anything stupid to counteract his boringness …. Then again, he is a Rosebrook.

Just a sidenote but I haven't loved an heir this much since Joce! ❤

    1. Yeah unfortunately there’s something of a curse that goes along with that name, huh? 😂 Poor kid… but we’ll see what he does!

And I’m so glad you love him! I really love him too. He’s so fun and so different from the other Rosebrooks! I hope you continue to love him as the gen goes on! 😉 ❤️

  7. Aww, was hoping to see Rylie again! ❤ I miss her and Katie.

It must suck to be caught between two families. More doesn't always equal better, as Phoenix discovered. He's in this weird in-between place.

At least he seems to have awesome friends. And I've known people like Tam, where they're super invested in their geeky interests and aren’t ashamed to let people know, and some people just respect them in a weird way even if they don’t understand at all. They’re the masters of their geeky domains.

Well, Phoenix is young. He’s got time to figure out his place in the world.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. We’ll be seeing even more of them later in the arc too 🙂 More than just a little blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo, at least! 😉

And yeah, I imagine it must suck too. 😦 In his eyes, each of his parents has their own little “complete” family… and he is not part of either one. :-/

His friends are pretty great though, you’re right! Especially Tam! I think Phoenix looks up to all of them a lot. Especially him. He’s definitely on that weird line where he’s SO unabashedly geeky that he’s almost cool because of it.

But Phoenix is just… Phoenix. And unfortunately he doesn’t think that’s good enough 😦

  8. Hmmm…that last line doesn’t make me feel good. He’s about to change himself but into what? He’s drifting…it’d be nice if he were okay with not having an”thing”. Most kids don’t at his age. They might be semi good at somethings or like several hobbies but aren’t attached to one. Here’s hoping he settles down and doesn’t try to spruce anything. That could get disappointing. Ugh! 😱

    Liked by 2 people

    1. But if he settles down and doesn’t force anything, where’s the fun in that? 😈

      I mean… we’ll see! What happens! 😇

  9. Awwww no. I can feel the rebellious teen phase coming on. It sucks Hallie made him feel insecure in himself. Someone needs to tell Phoenix no one has it all figured out at his age, (Harper definitely didn’t!) but I understand the feeling of “what the heck am I doing and where am I going in life” can be super overwhelming. Hopefully he won’t be as destructive as his mom! And whyyyyy do I feel like Hallie is going to be back when “new Phoenix” comes around??? 🤔 (I apologize for her again btw. She’s about to age up to a child and will work hard on being a nicer person, LOL)

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Great point that very few people have stuff figured out so young… especially his mom!

We shall see what Phoenix does from here… and whether or not Hallie comes back (and maybe stirs up more trouble? Hopefully not? Haha) Hopefully the Hallie in your universe has better luck with her boyfriends 😂

  10. I knew it! I knew he was going to feel this way. Man it really sucks that he feels that way. I’m pretty sure that neither of his families wanted that for him. Also Jasper whining about Phoenix having two birthdays is so stupid but I get it he’s a kid. Maybe Phoenix will find his niche without falling into a bad crowd. Are his traits still hotheaded and geek? Phoenix does seem lost but by the look on his face it doesn’t look like it’s gonna be good.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. You’re so right that his families never wanted him to feel that way. They love him and try to do the best they can for him ❤️ And yeah, Jasper was a bit of a stupid kid at that time… but he gets it a little more now for sure.

He is a hothead, but not *technically* a geek in game… though that’s like a hidden extra trait 😉

  11. “I’m so boring,” Phoenix says as he plays guitar and roleplays and slam dunks a basketball and then lays back with his cool friends of differing social cliques. “Why does anyone hang out with me?” he asks, surrounded by his circle of friends.

Does he have the Nerd Brain aspiration? I’ve been playing some Sims with that recently. It’s a challenge.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Okay this comment made me laugh 😂😂😂 I guess Phoenix just can’t think of it that way. He thinks he’s gotta fit into some kind of specific category in order to be special 😦

And actually, I’m ignoring his aspiration because he rolled “bodybuilder” 😂 Sometimes the trait roller is so weird. Maybe I’ll change it to something more fitting though!

      Liked by 2 people

  12. The guy who can do anything from geeky to sports, music included: I’m boring. Yeah. Right. LOL
If he could see how most teenagers are boring, just because…they still are just that. Teenagers. Sighs.
I’m worried about what he considers as interesting. Oh watcher… can’t wait for Saturday.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Aww I love your advice for Phoenix! And it’s so true — he’s much more interesting than he thinks he is!

We will see what he decides to do… 😈 Hopefully nothing bad! Haha

  13. Does Phoenix have the noncommittal or genius traits? For some reason, I’m getting this vibe from him that I give off myself (heh). We’re both book-smart, don’t know what else to do at school, and are a bit into other random hobbies.

I hope Phoenix eventually meets more nerds like himself! I feel like it’s going to be a long journey for him to find somewhere where he feels like he fits in. I wish I could tell this to him myself.

On another note, will there ever be anything to go over what happened to the rest of the Rosebrook family (the relatives who aren’t the heir)? I play the Sims 4 myself, and I know it’s actually quite difficult to maintain a large family (gotta love that eight-sim limit).

Aaaaaaaaaand another random topic, today was my last day of school for this school year! I look forward to the upcoming chapters this summer. I hope you have a good summer too 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Haha I’m glad you relate to Phoenix so much! He is a genius, yes! Not non-communal, though I love that interpretation!

There is most definitely a long journey ahead… we shall see where it all leads! 😉

As for other characters, most of my side characters ended up “adopted” by other Simlit writers to be used in their stories. Unfortunately in many of these cases, the stories kind of fizzled out. But if you check out the “character adoption”/crossover page, you can see where some people ended up! ^_^

Congrats on the last day of school! I hope you get to relax this summer!

      Thanks for reading! ^_^

  14. Awe, poor kid; he has enough to work though without that mean ol’ bitch messing him up more. Totally understand where the ‘boring’ feeling is coming from. It’s hard to feel part of a ‘group’ when each group is so (almost obsessively?) passionate about what they are doing. He’s a Rosebrook, he is going to get into trouble.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah, it’s really hard for him to feel like he doesn’t belong 😦 and it’s simply compounded by his family situation too. He feels like he’s floating in between everyone without a place to belong, poor kid 😦

But Rosebrooks? Get into trouble? Nahhhhh he’ll be fine 😛 😉

  15. Ohhhhh snap! I hope he dosen’t try to do anything ”radical” to try to fit in one group, I mean, yes, it’s good to know that you ”belong” somewhere, but, people are complex. We’ aren’t cartoon caracter’s with only one ”thing”, we all have multiple hobbies, and ”traits”…too bad bad Phoenix dosen’t see that way..He should ask his parent’s for advice, than, he will realize that having a label may not be good everytime…( Btw, I’m in a kind of in a reading hiauts because studies are nearly shatering my soul XD.)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh no, I hope you aren’t too stressed! Never feel pressured to keep up.. the story will always be here when you get back ❤️

And I think you’re right — this is a particular topic where I think Erik and Harper would have some useful advice!

      Liked by 1 person

  16. I so know how he feels, I’ve struggled with this well into my twenties, so many people do. You’re not boring Phee! You have varied interests. That’s always a better thing down the line, much more useful in life than being a one trick pony.

I guess now he’ll try to be “cool”. I hope he doesn’t leave his old friends behind in the process. He has such a good little group of people going right now!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah, it can be so hard to figure out who you are as a person, even when you’re an adult! He’s really taken that “I’m boring” thing to heart, unfortunately! Poor kid…

Let’s hope he doesn’t get carried away!
