Hallie had messaged him just after third period with her mysterious invitation to the park after school. Phoenix had texted his mother almost immediately to let her know he’d be walking home that afternoon.
There was supposed to be a basketball game on TV that Phoenix had really been looking forward to… But for Hallie, it could wait. Hell, anything could wait. Especially if she wanted to pick up where they left off behind the bowling alley the other night…
Phoenix did his best to silence a tiny voice of doubt and uncertainty in the back of his mind. He’d been trying so hard not to think about any of that crap that was getting him down the other day. Nobody’s relationship was perfect, right? He was making way too big a deal out of things. They’d only been together for like a month and a half anyway. They were still getting used to each other. Everything was gonna be fine.
“Hey, Phoenix.” Hallie’s voice broke through the jumbled thoughts that clouded his mind.
His smile widened as he turned around to face her. “Hey.” Phoenix closed the distance between them quickly, leaning forward to give her a kiss.
To his surprise, she turned her face away from him. His lips made clumsy contact with her cheek instead.
“Oh.” Phoenix muttered uncertainly as he pulled away. “Um…”
Hallie bit her lip. “Let’s sit down.”
Fuck. He felt like he was going to be sick as he took a seat beside her on the bench. This can’t be good.
“Look, Phoenix… I’m just gonna cut to the chase. I’m not really sure how else to say this, but…” She paused for a moment to take a slow, deep breath. “This isn’t working anymore. I’m sorry.”
It felt like someone had punched him in his already-twisting stomach. Phoenix was almost surprised he didn’t puke right then and there. “What?!” It was all he could manage to say.
“I just can’t keep doing this. It’s not working out.”
For a moment, Phoenix wasn’t quite sure which emotion would win out. A small part of him almost felt… relief. But the feeling was fleeting.
She was rejecting him! Saying they should just end things without even trying to fix it! He felt so sad and hurt… But so angry too.
“Where the hell is this coming from?” He snapped at last. “What about the other night?”
“It was fun, okay?” Hallie replied with a shrug. “And I guess I was kinda hoping it would help make things better… But I’m just not feeling it anymore. No ‘spark’, or whatever they call it.”
“Pfft!” Phoenix couldn’t help but scoff at the lame cliche. “‘Not working out’, ‘No spark’… What’s next? The ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ speech?”
She shook her head, biting her lip once more. “No… ‘Cause, uh… to be totally honest… I think most of it IS you.”
“What the hell?! Are you serious?!”
“Well… yeah.” Hallie looked almost guilty. “This is gonna sound so bitchy, but I feel like somebody’s gotta say it…”
Another wave of nausea overcame him. “Oh God. What now?!”
“It’s just… You’re kinda… boring, Phoenix.”
He said nothing. His mind was still trying to wrap itself around what she’d just said. Boring?!
“Like, I mean you’re nice and you’re cute. And you’re actually a decent kisser and stuff? But…” Hallie shrugged.
“But I’m boring.” Phoenix finished for her, his voice soft. The anger he’d felt before seemed to have melted instantly at her words. Instead he just felt… defeated. Empty.
Hallie’s face fell. “I’m sorry… Maybe that was a little too harsh. I’m mean, you’re a sweet guy, Phoenix. You really are.” She paused. “But let’s be real — We’re just too different.” For a moment, she seemed to have a hard time meeting his gaze. “I think… I think I maybe need a boyfriend who’s a little more exciting. Or who likes to have a little more fun, I guess?”
“Yeah. I get it.” Phoenix rose to his feet slowly. “But for the record, it’s also pretty fucking boring watching you sit around staring at your phone all the time too. Or sitting through your stupid Netflix shows. Which suck, by the way.” He snapped.
“Phoenix…”
“Bye, Hallie.”
————————————-
Boring…
The word seemed to echo in Phoenix’s mind the entire way home.
It shouldn’t have come as a surprise that she felt that way, should it? He’d already figured it out himself the other night.
And shouldn’t he be relieved that it was all over now? That they didn’t have to keep pretending anymore?
Maybe. But it still hurt. So freaking much.
Hallie was never one to mince her words. She was always honest… Maybe even too honest. But did she really have to say that? Did she have to call him boring?
And what if it was true, he wondered?
Was that why Skylar had dumped him too? She was the closest thing to a girlfriend Phoenix had ever had, before Hallie. They made it through three dates before she let him down.
“Couples are supposed to like, have fun together, y’know?” He tried his best to remember exactly what she’d said. “But I think we maybe have like, different ideas of what ‘fun’ is…? Sorry, Phoenix.”
His eyes widened. Oh my God. She’d basically said the same thing, hadn’t she? It was true.
I’m boring. Phoenix realized. I’m lame and I’m boring and no one’s ever gonna wanna date me again.
He felt like he was in a daze as he finally made his way up the front walkway. He almost didn’t notice his little sister’s giggles coming from the backyard, at first. But before he made it to the front door, her sweet little voice finally reached his ears.
Phoenix glanced up, his eyes falling on Lila as she climbed around the jungle gym in the backyard. The sight actually brought a smile to his face. Sure, she annoyed the shit out of him most of the time. But she was so damn cute too… Not that he’d ever tell her that, of course.
Even though he knew how much his Mama and Dev hated it, Phoenix cut through the flowers and the hedge to join Lila in the backyard. She’d be a welcome distraction… He just didn’t feel ready to face his parents or grandparents quite yet.
“Hey, twerp.” He called up to her as he approached. “What are you up to?”
The little girl giggled. “I’m exploring the seven seas!” She proclaimed dramatically. “Oh, and I’m a princess too. Duh.”
Phoenix chuckled heartily. “Well obviously.” Lila didn’t even have to be playing a game for that to be true. “Looks pretty fun… Think the pirate princess could use a first mate? Or an evil villain to walk the plank?”
“Hmm…” Lila was thoughtful for a few moments. “What about a big mean sea monster to attack the ship?”
Phoenix’s reply was a deafening roar.
The sun was just starting to set when Harper finally headed out in the backyard to fetch her children. “Alright, guys… Your Opa says it’s time for dinner!”
Phoenix looked over at his mother, surprised. It wasn’t until that moment that he realized he’d been expecting a text asking where he was. But he’d never gotten one. “You knew I was home?” He replied.
Harper laughed brightly. “Honey, I’m pretty sure half the neighborhood could hear that sea monster attack.” She teased. “Sorry to break up the party, but it’s time to abandon ship, guys.”
“Do we have to? What about just five more minutes, Mama?” Lila begged.
Her mother shook her head. “You know how Papa is… he’ll eat all of it himself if we don’t get in there soon!” With one last smile, Harper finally turned and began heading back inside.
“Alright twerp, you heard the boss… Let’s go.” Phoenix reached up to help his little sister off the jungle gym. “We can play again some other time.”
To his surprise, as he bent to lower her back onto the ground, Lila pulled him into a tight squeeze. For someone to tiny, she nearly knocked him off his feet. “You were the best sea monster ever, Phoenix!” She proclaimed. “That was so fun!”
“You sure about that?” He asked softly, finally pulling away from her. “You don’t think I’m boring?”
Lila shook her head. “No way! You’re like… the funnest person I know.”
Phoenix reached down and ruffled her mop of bright red hair. “Thanks, twerp.” He smiled softly. “Glad someone thinks so.”
While I’m glad Hallie’s gone, not glad about the damage to his psyche that she did.. 👿 yes it IS you… 👿 This is gonna sound bitchy? You think? 🙄 I was so glad he yelled back at her. 👏 Score one for Phoenix. And the sea monster with his sister was way cute. She probably helped him feel a tiny bit better. Two for Phoenix. ❤️

Haha Hallie definitely tells it like it is… and I think she thought she was doing him some sort of favor? In her weird, self-absorbed teenage way? Haha But you’re right, this was a huge blow to poor Phoenix’s self esteem 😦
Playing with Lila definitely helped lift his spirits though! He’s come a long way since that first chapter… he loves his little sister so much (just don’t ever tell her he said that 😉 )

Glad Hallie is gone! The way she ended thing was not pleasent at all! I hope Phoenix does not try to change himself only because of what two people said. Maybe he is just going after the wrong kind of people? Maybe he should find someone that is not into all that…“fun stuff“, like, that enjoys the RPG things, or even his nerdy hobbies? Anyway, I am glad he has his little sister to remind him that he is not boring…And to think he thought she was annoying when he was a child!

That’s a great point about how Phoenix shouldn’t try and change himself over this… though I’m sure it’s tempting! There’s gotta be a girl out there who will appreciate him, right?
His little sister definitely does ❤️ She looks up to him so much!

Yeah…bye bitch. Not gonna miss you.
Poor Phoenix though. Hopefully he can bounce back in some way…there’s gotta be someone with similar interests to him. However, Lila is adorable and I love her relationship with her brother.

I’d love it if the next chapter was a montage of Phoenix dying his hair and putting on a leather jacket being like “think I’m boring now bitch”.
Ah, teenagers. So simple. So dumb. One day Pheonix will find a girl who likes what he likes. Maybe a trip to Geek Con is in order? He’ll hit college and the nerdy girls will be crawling out of the woodwork. You gotta believe.

I love that you have faith in our geeky little guy! We’ll see… the future is wide open! For now, he’s definitely getting a little hung up on the “I’m boring” thing 😦 Hopefully he can get over it…

Good riddance! Phoenix, you don’t need that ho!
And boring to her will be creative excitement to another girl. The right girl. He needs to stop chasing the popular, stylish, cool crowd and date some geeks for a change.
Awww…I loved that exchange between Lily. What a sweet bro she has! And Lily adores him. 😃❤️
I hope Phoenix doesn’t do something stupid to inject excitement into his life to attract the wrong girls.

Hahaha “that ho” 😂❤️ I agree… time to move on! Hopefully to the right girl. But… hmm… a Rosebrook do something stupid? Nah… never 😉
And yes, Lila absolutely adores her big brother. And he loves that little twerp too 😉

OMG Hallie’s face. Did you pose that? I died. You know it’s the end when one person starts turning their head away. She was brutal–there was no reason to be so cruel, but teenagers can be masters of casual cruelty sometimes, along with kids.
I’m sure there’ll be more (and more suitable) girls in Phoenix’s future. Not worth getting upset, but rejection always hurts.
Lila is adorable. ❤ ❤ ❤ I already love her. Glad she was able to make her brother feel better.

Haha the cheek kiss? Yes, I did pose that one! 😛 And yeah, she was pretty brutal, but, like you said… teenagers 🙄
Glad you liked Lila 🙂 She’s an adorable little sweetheart, and she and her brother love each other so much (even if he might not always wanna admit that haha)

So much Hallie hate from The People!
Poor girl, as far as teenage rejections go, that was pretty decent! She didn’t do it in front of his friends, she didn’t do it via text, she took him somewhere private so if he had a bad reaction he wouldn’t need to feel embarrassed in front of strangers, AND she was refreshingly honest with him, even if her complaints were subjective.
All in all, I’m giving her an ‘atta boy’ for going above and beyond what a lot of teen girls (and guys) would, and props for not stringing him along for ages… definitely ahead of the curve; 10/10 there’s every chance she’ll grow into a perfectly awesome woman one day.
Pho, you’re on the right path to discovering what the Right Girl looks like for you! Yeah, to Hallie and Skylar you *are* boring, but that’s just teenage speak for “I’m not into what you’re into” 😀

Haha it’s true that she could have handled it a lot worse (like via text or at school in front of everyone, like you said!). I don’t think she meant to be so cruel… she just is a typical teenager who meant well, but lacked the tact to actually express her thoughts in a non-bitchy way haha.
Still pretty brutal words from her though though. Poor Phoenix 😦 I fear it won’t be quite so easy for him to interpret her words as anything but “There is something wrong with you and you need to change”…
But we can hope! Haha

Aww ❤ no worries! I didn't think she was cruel, or bitchy, or even brutal at all! I wish I was half as considerate as she was when I was a teenage girl /shame

Haha unfortunately Phoenix didn’t see it as considerate 😦 But I see what you are saying! Phoenix isn’t the type to hold a grudge though (unlike so many Rosebrooks before him haha) so at least we know he isn’t gonna hold this against her. He’s just gonna internalize it like crazy 😬

As if that wasn’t totally obvious from the start. I wouldn’t give too much thought on that, but Phoenix still is a teen. He will take this to heart. And I honestly don’t know enough about him to be able to tell, but I guess it’s not his overall boringness that’s the problem, but lack of experience. We know he has a hard time finding a girlfriend and keeping a girlfriend, at a time where teenage hormones make most of his agemates fly from one “partner” to the next. He knows what to do with his best friends (play tabletop games) and what to play with his little sister. But he didn’t really know what to do with Hallie besides giving in to her wishes and making out. They didn’t seem like they talked a lot or talked about hobbies or fun things to do. Of course he could have tried things out and took things forward, but I guess the kids with the more clubby outgoing habits just already know more things to do with a girl without making out.
Phoenix does not have to learn to be “less boring”, but he should learn how to get to know people better, find things he has in common or is interested in and reach out a bit. That may be a hard piece of work, but it’s not like he could only be happy with a girlfriend. He needs to seek for what he loves, what he is passionate for, and when he finds it that will make him interesting enough. He likes his games, but he needs something he can burn for.

This is really insightful! But I think you may, unfortunately, be right that he won’t really see it that way.
He should definitely try pursuing a passion and finding others who he can share it with. There’s gotta be someone and something out there that can make him happy! But he’s still so young and has so far to go…

I’ll give Halle SOME teeny tiny credit for not stringing him along, but damn girl, no need to be harsh.
If it was any other teenager, I wouldn’t be too worried. Teenagers think everything is the end of the world and tend to overreact, but they grow out of it.
However, Phoenix is a Rosebrook …
So this tiny comment might lead to a lifetime full of stubborn rebellion and eventual misery, just to prove he’s not boring.
Ok, Maybe now I’m overreacting but I’m trying to prepare myself for the worst :p I just hope Phoenix soon realizes he deserves someone who is much nicer to him and his friends ❤
Sidenote, I love his relationship with Lila and I LOVE seeing a happy and smiling Harper!

Yeah, I’m the grand scheme of things, it could have gone a lot worse! Hallie was really harsh, but I don’t think she meant to hurt him. I think she was just trying to be honest.
And LOL I have ruined you 😂 You may be right that there’s the potential for this to cause major problems in the future…. but we shall see!
And I’m so happy you loved his and Lila’s relationship! They are such sweet siblings ❤️ Thank you, Sonnie!

Glad Hallie is gone, but what a bitchy way to go. Like why would you ever tell someone that you’re breaking up with that you think they’re boring? That’s so rude. I just hope that Phoenix realizes that her opinion shouldn’t change who he is.
I loved the scene with Lila, though. She knows what she’s talking about. Nothing like playing monster with a younger sibling to lift his spirits.

Of course she’s gonna say he is boring. She doesn’t notice all the fun and amazing things about him when her nose is in her phone all the time. I bet she’s already found someone else with all that texting…
He definitely deserves someone better than her.
I feel like she totally let him on. She let him think that they were all good because she let him play with her breasts. He’s a teenage boy. He’s driven by his hormones, but I am proud of him for accepting she didn’t wanna go further that day. And even he started to realize it probably weren’t supposed to be together in the long run.
His reaction was kinda childish though. Lashing out because it didn’t turn out the way he wanted it to. Even though he was right though. It is boring when she looks at her phone all the time instead of looking up at him and just enjoy their time together.
The girls he dates doesn’t appreciate him for who he is. I hope being called boring doesn’t make him try to be “cool”… like doing drugs or drinking heavily. Because that is pretty much what the teenagers today think is cool at his age. I really hope he has more sense than that, or I will be very disappointed in him.
He needs a girl who can appreciate him and his hobbies. Maybe someone else who plays D&D? Or just games in general? Someone who understands him and see how great he is.
Just the fact that he, as a teenager, takes the time to play with his sister, is such a wonderful thing and needs to be cherished. So many teenagers does not want to hang out with their younger siblings.
I love Phoenix ❤ He's the best!
Btw. Are Jasper and Tamsin actually gay? Or is it just assumptions?

Aw, I like how you put that! Too distracted with her phone to notice how fun and amazing he is ❤️ I totally agree too! 🙂
And you’re right( he was definitely childish in his reaction, but he’s a teenager, so he’s not very mature quite yet. And neither is she… but they’ll both get there someday, hopefully! 😉
As for your concerns… it’s definitely possible Phoenix will try and do something drastic 😬 But let’s hope that won’t be the case!
Glad you think he’s the best! I love him too ❤️❤️❤️

I need him to go on some online forum and find some Windenburg girls who like D&D. They must exist. He found Hallie boring too, so he should totally take her opinion that he’s boring with a grain of salt. Okay, so after Dust2Dust, I ended up here. Now, after a couple of weeks, I finally caught up with the story. I had to hold myself back from commenting the story, because I was so far behind. So here are some random thoughts I’m sharing now:
– “Oh Mari noo, you are are great, why can’t you see that?”
– “Aww Jonas is so sweet!”
– “Tobidaddy!”
– “Get over it Stefan!”
– “Tobi, come on… Don’t react that way.”
– “Stefan is the best!”
– “Jocy and Mark are sitting in a tree… K I S S I N G!”
– “Who? What? Not now! What’s happening?!” (This happened when I lost my internet connection when Joce received a phone call about Luk dying, didn’t know that yet, then.)
– “It’s all my fault, I shouldn’t have continued reading :'(”
– “Zayne, you ungrateful little…”
– “Harper, you spoiled little…”
– “Cool prison!”
– “Haha, Katie ftw”
– “Phoenixxxxxx!”
Anyway, just to give you an idea…
Oh and congratulations on the move, the engagement and everything else that happened!

Ah well, at least she didn’t string him on for long and gave him an honest explanation (though not very delicately phrased!). Better that than be left wondering. In time he’ll know that he’ll be able to find people who are interested in the same stuff he is, but he has to go through the painful growing up part to realise that… I don’t envy him!
That sibling moment was adorable. Lila is a cutie! At least the other people in his life can make him feel grounded when his love life is going… well, like teenage lovelife where everyone is trying to figure out who they are still.

All things considered, Hallie handled this pretty well, for a teenage girl! She broke up with him in-person, and was completely honest with him. She just completely lacked tact 😬 Hopefully Phee won’t take it too personally!
