Interlude: Broken

“There.” Jocelyne stepped back, admiring her handiwork. “That’s… not so bad, right?”

Beside her, Elliot laughed. “Well, it’s standing, at least. The real test will be to see if it can actually hold a computer…”

11-14-16_4-19-03-pm

“One way to find out?”

Elliot shook his head. “Nah… It can wait til later.” He said. They’d already spent the past several hours getting his new apartment set up. The little things could wait. “Thanks, by the way. For helping out.” He added seriously.

11-14-16_4-20-38-pm

Jocelyne smiled, sending a wave of butterflies through his stomach. “It’s the least I can do. You’ve been amazing throughout this whole thing, Elliot. Just like always.”

A slight warmth came to his cheeks at her words. He could not be sure if it was from embarrassment or anger. More like I gave up everything for you. He thought almost bitterly. Just like always.

But deep down, Elliot knew he wouldn’t have had it any other way. He couldn’t have. He needed to be there for his girls. And Jocelyne needed to be there for Zayne.

11-14-16_4-27-16-pm

Elliot just shrugged, and quickly changed the subject. “Hey, since we’re pretty much done around here, wanna pick up the girls and grab something to eat?”

His ex nodded. “Sounds good to me. Who knew putting together furniture could help you work up such an appetite?” She let out a small laugh. “But do you mind if we bring Zayne along?” Jocelyne asked almost guiltily. “I’ve been trying to make him feel included, y’know? I mean, he’s family now… Well, he was always family.” She corrected herself. “But…”

11-14-16_4-25-46-pm

Elliot hesitated for just a moment. “Sure.” He replied. “I get it. That’s fine.”

“Are you sure?”

He nodded. “It’s like you said – he’s family.”

11-14-16_4-21-52-pm

Elliot’s heart truly broke for the little boy – which was why he simply couldn’t bring himself to resent him, no matter how tempting it was. “Give me a minute to find my wallet in this mess and we can head over.”

“Great.” Jocelyne smiled. “I’ll drive.”

11-14-16_4-24-32-pm

————————————–

As they pulled up to Jocelyne’s parents’ house, Elliot could not help but notice that one of the cars out front seemed strangely out of place. Elliot had not been to the Rosebrook house often enough to recognize all the vehicles, but he could tell there was definitely one car too many.

He gave Jocelyne a curious look. She seemed to understand immediately.

“Mark must be visiting.” She explained with a small shrug. There was a hint of an emotion in her voice that Elliot could not quite name.

11-14-16_5-36-12-pm

He fought to hide his discomfort as they approached the front door. I should have known…

Sure enough, they walked through the door and were greeted by the sounds of several voices coming from the living room. Among them, Elliot could make out a deep male voice, speaking English with a distinct British accent.

11-14-16_5-37-55-pm 11-14-16_5-47-30-pm

“Okay, so… how many points was that worth?” Mark asked curiously.

“Ten!” Charlie smiled brightly as she cheered on her Void Critter. “But it’s not really points… It’s kinda hard to explain.”

11-14-16_5-45-31-pm

“I bet Zayne could tell you.” Alex chimed in, looking over at the little boy who sat on the couch. “It’s still hard to talk to him, but he knows all about Void Critters. I can tell!”

Tony glanced up from the cartoon as her parents entered the room, finally making their presence known. “Daddy! Hi Daddy!” She hopped up off the couch. “Hi Mommy!”

“Hey, honey.” Elliot bent forward as his daughter practically leapt into his arms.

11-14-16_5-50-38-pm

“All moved in?” Colette asked kindly.

“More or less.” Elliot shrugged. “We got all the big stuff done, at least.”

“Well, if you need any more help, you know who to call.” Tobi offered.

11-14-16_5-53-04-pm

Elliot simply nodded. “Thanks.”

Jocelyne’s parents and grandparents had offered more than once to help with the move, but he’d turned down every offer. It felt strange to accept help from the Rosebrooks. They always went out of their way to be kind to him, and to treat him like a member of the family. But while they may have been his daughters’ family, they were not his. And they never would be.

“We just wanted to grab the kiddos and go get a bite to eat.” Jocelyne explained, her voice calling Elliot back to the present.

Elliot couldn’t help but notice that she still had not even glanced in Mark’s direction… But Mark was definitely looking in hers.

11-14-16_6-06-47-pm

“Lunch with Mommy AND Daddy?!” Alex’s eyes lit up at her mother’s words. “Cool!”

It suddenly struck Elliot just how rarely the girls ever saw him and Jocelyne together. The thought sent a wave of sadness washing over him. He and his sister had been lucky enough to grow up in a home with both of their parents, just as Jocelyne had. How many years had he taken for granted just how lucky he’d been? Elliot did his best to will the feeling away.

“Zayne, would you like to get some lunch with us?” Jocelyne turned her attention to her nephew, addressing him in German.

11-14-16_7-04-47-pm

“Um…” Zayne hesitated. He turned uncertainly toward his grandmother, who nodded encouragingly at the little boy. “Y-yeah. I guess so.” He agreed at last, his voice very small. “Okay.”

Zayne bid his grandparents and great-grandparents goodbye in German while his cousins did the same in English.

11-14-16_7-09-56-pm

“Thanks for playin’ Void Critters with us, Mark!” Charlie beamed. “Nex’ time I’ll teach you how to train your Yorier, okay?”

The man laughed softly. “Sounds perfect.”

11-14-16_7-12-04-pm

“Mommy, Zayne’s grandpa is SO cool!” Tony smiled sweetly at her mother as Charlie and Alex joined her. “He played Void Critters with us and helped Alex beat Charlie’s Vulpes!”

11-14-16_7-18-00-pm

Elliot watched Jocelyne’s smile falter. “Wow!” Her enthusiasm was clearly forced. “That’s awesome.”

“I think the girls are trying to convert me or something.” Mark stepped toward them, smiling. “Zayne too, actually… He already talked me into downloading that silly Void Critter Go app.”

11-14-16_7-24-54-pm

A weak laugh escaped Jocelyne’s lips. “Yeah, the girls roped me into that one a while ago.” She hesitated for a moment before continuing. “Um, thank you, by the way. For being so great with the girls.”

“My pleasure. They’re fun. Really sweet kids. Smart too.” Mark smiled warmly at her. “Just like their mother.”

11-14-16_7-26-34-pm

Elliot felt a white-hot burst of anger threatening to flare up inside of him. The way Mark was looking at Jocelyne… Even after all these years, he resented Mark for what he’d done. Destroying their family. Standing in the way of their happiness.

11-14-16_7-30-40-pm

He glanced over at Jocelyne, who had still said nothing in response to Mark’s comment. But she didn’t have to – her eyes said it all.

11-14-16_7-30-18-pm

Elliot cleared his throat a bit louder than necessary. “Yeah, thanks Mark.” He muttered quickly. “It was nice to see you, Mr. and Mrs. Rosebrook. Mr. and Mrs. Klein.”

“You too, Elliot.” Jonas smiled.

He just barely managed to force one in return.

11-14-16_7-33-21-pm

Elliot was silent as he followed Jocelyne and the children toward the front door. He marveled at how normal it almost felt – hearing Jocelyne  laugh with the girls, seeing little Zayne tag along with them, bubbly and happy as ever, despite all he’d been through.

They were a little, broken family – one Elliot barely felt a part of.

11-14-16_7-35-12-pm

He longed to know what things would be like if he and Jocelyne were still together – if she had loved him the way he’d loved her.

What would it be like to help raise Zayne? To finally have the son he’d always wanted?

11-14-16_6-08-30-pm

How would it feel to go out to lunch, or see a movie, or go to the park together as a family? A real, whole family?

11-14-16_4-40-53-pm

To wake up beside the mother of his children every morning?

11-14-16_4-06-18-pm

To have full custody of his daughters, and get to see them every day?

11-14-16_4-32-56-pm

Elliot would never know. Because their family would never be normal. It would always be broken.

11-14-16_7-36-12-pm

But broken or not, they were still his family. He loved them more than anything. And no matter how shitty things were in his life, Elliot knew he had to stay strong for his girls.

Just like always.

    1. Ooh! Our first-ever Jelliot shipper! 😛 I think you’re right though, she’s hurt him way too many times and I don’t think he’d ever trust her again, even though he clearly has some lingering feelings for her. And I think Joce still sees him as nothing more than a great guy/father to the girls.

But hey, you never know! Things can change 😉 Thanks for reading!

  1. He must have some strong attchmenet to Joy if he movies half way across the world just to be with his daughters. I mean it could be worse-he could have gotten worse ie: NO custody of the kids.

  2. Void Critters Go – HA! I love it.

Poor Elliot. He’s been a real stand-up guy. I mean…he followed his ex across the world for a child he doesn’t know. I really hope he finds love of his own, someone that’ll get him over Jocelyne properly. Because I feel like he definitely still has feelings for her…but I don’t think that ship could ever sail. So the solution is to get him with someone else and have them be soulmates.

    1. Elliot is a saint haha seriously. And still harboring some lingering feelings for Joce doesn’t hurt 😂 He knew Zayne couldn’t be taken away from his family and move to the US. And he didn’t wanna fight some crazy international custody battle with Joce… so he took what he considered to be the path of least resistance.

I hope he finds love too. He really deserves it so much. We will see 🙂

  3. Well, is the way things go..For what I can see, he thinks is all Mark’s thought, but I think, if the dream was real, it would not be that way, because Joce would be in a without-love marriage ( for her) and one time or another, the bluble would pop up, it was a ”nice thing” the girls were only little new-born when they separated, that way, they didn’t feel much of an impact when it happen, and let’s see how it will go,Elliot…I hope he founds someone that he loves, thought if he has childrem with they ( hey, I don’t judge..) I wonder how would it be for the girls…

    1. You do bring up a great point — they’d be trapped in a loveless marriage if things didn’t end when they did, and the girls were young enough that they never had to actually go though the trauma of seeing the breakup.

I hope he finds love too. We will see!

      1. I agree back then things would have turned out badly if they had stayed together. But I feel that in the time since a lot has happened and they have both changed and grown as people especially Joce. I believe..Ok want to believe that this would work out now if they took time to actually get to know each other properly outside of just being parents to their children.

  4. *waves hand* second Jelliot shipper over here. I love Elliott I too have hopes of things reigniting between them. In the very least I just hope she doesn’t get back with Mark I think that would destroy Elliott giving up his life to support her and be a good father to their children to watch her build a life with the man who destroyed his happiness.

    1. Dang, the SS Jelliot is rising! 😂 You’re right that her getting back with Mark could totally have a really negative effect on Elliot. Right now that’s very much up in the air, though in general I don’t think Joce is looking to get back with Mark haha hard to say what he’s thinking right now about it though. We’ll see!

      Thanks for reading!

  5. {Silent Lurker Here} Follwed this story ever since Dust to Dust, and every day when I get online I peek over here to see if there’s any updates lol Thought it was about time I posted saying how much I love this story, and all it’s happy, funny, sad, twisted, nerve wrecking joyfulness! Can’t wait to see where sweet little Zayne ends up, and also excited about Clara’s upcoming baby, and Joce’s storyline! {she’s been my favourite character so far} Anyways, I’m rambling, but kudos to another beautifully woven sim-fiction story and addicting read!

    1. Oh hi! Thank you so much for reading my stories. I appreciate it so very much!!! ^_^

I’m so glad you’re enjoying it (the happy and the sad! Haha) I’m looking forward to writing Zayne as he gets older too 🙂 And I’m so glad you love Joce.

      Thanks again for reading 😀

  6. Yay congrats on 250 chapters! That’s awesome!

In a way, I would love it if Elliot and Joce could be together. But I don’t think it’d ever work out. There’s a reason it didn’t before. I feel that Elliot would be way too resentful of the mistakes Joce made in the past to ever truly trust her again, no matter how much he loves her. And I think that Joce just loves Mark way too much. It’s Obvious, and they couldn’t ignore it. As much as the idea of them as a family is cute, I don’t see it happening.

On the other hand, Mark and Joce… There’s so much history there. But so complicated. Maybe all three of them are forced to be bachelors for the rest of their lives.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh no, that would be a very tragic outcome for the three of them, wouldn’t it? But it’s definitely possible hahahaha.

I feel like right now the prospects for BOTH ships aren’t great, even Marklyne haha. So much history between all of them. But things can definitely change and this is a long gen, so anything could happen at this point!

  7. Elliot…you have my complete, unbridled sympathy and support.

For some reason, it really stood out to me when the girl (don’t know which one) said, “Zayne’s grandpa…” It almost felt like you were trying to make a point there, but no one in the story got it lol. Man, seeing Joce with a herd of children behind her still feels weird. I never pictured her with a village lol.

        1. Lets see…Elliot, vindicated as it proves marklyne is not meant to be, Joyce embarrassed because ut points put Marks age. Mark…um probably wasnt paying as much attention to the situation as he was staring and Joyce and trying to fund an excuse to talk to her…the rest probably winced as it brought to mind the painful past situation.

    1. Saint Elliot! Hahaha he really is so nice. Maybe too nice. But alas, that’s who he is haha the Jonas of Gen 5.

And yeah, the girls have zero idea of the history there and it definitely helps shove the strange family connection in poor Joce’s face!

And yeah, I never pictured her with a village either 😂 A single daughter named Charlie and then nephew Zayne. The game had other plans *sigh* haha

  8. It was a bit of a sad chapter, but also a happy one. Joce is clearly still into Mark and i could really see them together still. I’m sure they will be together in the end, though it might be far into the future. But I haven’t given up yet!
Elliot is so great! I think he might still love Joce in a way. The way he thinks about her, that he wants to wake up to her every morning. That he dreams of a whole family with her.
Mark is great with the girls. That he wants to play void critters with them. Can adults actually play that? Or did you just make him sit down on the floor?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I adore Elliot 🙂 I do think he may harbor some feelings for her still, but he also does not trust her after how much she’s hurt him. 😦

And yeah, Mark is awesome with children! There is a mod that lets adults play VC but I don’t actually have it haha I used pose player 🙂

  9. I hope Elliot finds someone to love him. I think he wouldn’t feel so resentful and hurt. I liked reading this chapter from his perspective. I feel bad for him. Does Mark have the childish trait and is that why he was able to play void critters? I thought it was cute 🙂
Interesting dynamics at play. Can’t wait to see how it all plays out and hold my breath with anticipation.

    1. I hope Elliot finds some happiness too. He deserves it! Mark does not have the childish trait in-game (though in my story, kinda haha) and he wasn’t actually playing, I used the pose player to make him kneel using the animations adults have for when they kneel and play with the doll house 🙂

Thanks for reading, as always! 😀

  11. Congrats on 250 chapters 🙂 That’s dedication 🙂

I completely sympathise with Elliot hear. Loving someone he doesn’t trust is absolutely awful. 😦 I kind of hope all three of them move on and find different partners because now it’s all too complicated for any of them to work out. But Zayne’s grandpa is the best. I say Zayne’s grandpa not Mark because he is good at grandad-ing but not so good at life.

Heh, Void Critter Go. *cough* Pokemon *cough* :p

    1. Thanks Spottydog 🙂 I feel bad for Elliot too! We’ll have to see what the future holds for him (and Joce and Mark). And yes, Mark is a very good grandfather. He’s excellent with children 😀

Glad you appreciated Void Critter Go 😛

    1. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t meant to be 😦 He is such a kind soul though. Who knew the random dude Joce crushed on in the library would turn out to be such a loving and devoted father to her future children? 😛

  12. Wow, 250! Dang, girl! 😉

I do think that Elliot is a fantastic guy. He moved halfway across the world to be with his daughters and to support his ex. I just don’t he and Joce would have worked as a couple, even if Joce hadn’t cheated on him with Mark. I think that Mark just had too big of a spot in her heart back then for her and Elliot to have settled down with each other. But, it does suck for him, still having some feelings for his ex. I hope he does eventually find happiness.

    Void Critter Go…. 😀

    1. Elliot is awesome, but yeah, things definitely weren’t meant to be between him and Joce 😦 I hope he’ll find happiness too!

And I’m glad you enjoyed Void Critter Go hehehehehe

  13. Hahaha it did come up back when Jocelyne first met him ^_^ Mark is from
England, and English is his first language. Because Hazel was born and raised in Germany, German was her first language. However thanks to her dad, I imagine she spoke English very well, and likely with the same accent as his 🙂

I’m glad you enjoyed this chapter. I am hoping the family can come back together again soon! Now that Joce, Elliot, and the triplets are officially moved to Windenburg I think it’s finally time for them to be able to start adjusting and moving forward 🙂

Also, I had a feeling the game was like pokemon, but when you said Void Critters Go I was like YES XD
Poor Elliot 😦 I wasn’t a fan of his relationship with Jocelyne, or even his choice in words on occasion, but he was a decent guy.

  15. Honestly, I really like Elliot. Always have. I was never fully with the idea of Marklyne anyway. So as long as there’s Jelliot (which I don’t believe there will be for long), I’ll be good. But it’s going to crash and burn anyway.
