Interlude: Circumstances

Jocelyne shifted uncomfortably in her seat as she looked around the tiny waiting room, desperate for anything to entertain her. She hadn’t even brought her cellphone with her – she was in too much of a hurry to make her appointment… Only to find that they were running late.

10-21-16_4-43-53-pm

She’d forgotten all about her meeting when she’d gone to Mark’s place the night before. It wasn’t until her eyes fluttered open the next morning that she remembered.

At least it was an excuse to slip away. She thought.

Facing Mark that morning would have been too uncomfortable. Too painful. Too awkward.

10-21-16_4-14-50-pm

It didn’t mean anything anyway. Jocelyne told herself firmly.

Still, she had no regrets. It had been exactly what she needed. And what Mark needed too. But it was a moment of comfort, nothing more.

Leaving that bed was so much easier than she’d thought it would be. And Jocelyne was able to slip away before he even knew she was gone.

10-21-16_4-20-44-pm

Thankfully her parents did not question her when she returned to their house in the same dress she’d been wearing the night before. That was a welcome surprise. Maybe after all these years, they’d finally accepted her as an adult. Maybe they’d decided to stop judging her for her choices, or treating her like a child.

At least, Jocelyne certainly hoped so.

“Ms. Rosebrook?” A soft female called from the doorway across the room. Jocelyne rose to her feet, nodding.

10-21-16_4-48-31-pm

“I apologize for the delay.” She continued. “Please, step into my office.” The woman gestured toward the door as she spoke.

With a deep breath, Jocelyne accepted her invitation.

10-21-16_4-53-27-pm

She’d been so puzzled when the lawyer’s office had contacted her, before she’d even gotten on her plane to Windenburg. She was in the car on the way to the Willow Creek airport when she’d gotten the call.

They hadn’t given her many details, just that it concerned her brother’s will.

What could he have left me? She wondered. Why would he think of her, of all people?

Today, perhaps she would find out.

10-21-16_4-54-40-pm

“So, Ms. Rosebrook.” The lawyer said, clearing her throat softly. “Let me start by extending my deepest condolences to you.”

“Thank you very much, Ms…?” Jocelyne hesitated, biting her lip uncertainly. She’d already forgotten the name written outside the office door.

“Lange.” She replied. “Roberta Lange.”

10-21-16_4-55-23-pm

“Ms. Lange.” She finished, trying to smile.

“If you don’t mind, I have a few questions for you before we get down to business.”

“O-of course.” She muttered. What could this be about?

“I understand you reside in the United States, Ms. Rosebrook?”

“Yes.” She confirmed. “In Willow Creek.”

10-21-16_4-56-51-pm

“And are you a United States citizen?”

She shook her head. “I have a green card.” She explained. “But my children are full citizens, like their father.” Why is she asking me this?!

“Ah, children?” Somehow, that seemed to grab her attention. “How old are the little ones?”

“Six.” Jocelyne smiled as she spoke. “They’re triplets, actually.”

Her eyes widened.

10-21-16_5-01-57-pm

“I know.” The younger woman laughed. “They’re quite the handful… But their father and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” She assured her.

“And… You aren’t married, is that correct?”

“N-no… Their father and I aren’t together.” Jocelyne’s brow furrowed. She simply couldn’t take this strange questioning anymore. “Ms. Lange, may I ask what all this is about?”

10-21-16_5-08-55-pm

“Of course, of course.” The lawyer cleared her throat softly. “Just addressing the… circumstances of you and your… sons? Daughters?”

Despite her nerves, Jocelyne couldn’t help but laugh. “That always confuses people. Elliot and I thought we were being so clever… Our girls are Charlie, Alex, and Tony.” She explained. “Short for Charlotte, Alexandria, and Antoinette. Cute, right?” A small smile came to her lips. “It was his idea.”

10-21-16_5-10-17-pm

Ms. Lange seemed thoroughly unamused by the girls’ nicknames. “Ms. Rosebrook, as you know, I’ve called you here today to discuss your brother’s will. Though I’m wondering if, given your circumstances, we may wish to reconsider this particular decision…”

“Reconsider what decision?” Jocelyne sighed heavily, her smile fading as her nerves finally got the better of her. “Please, Ms. Lange. What is this about?”

10-21-16_5-13-51-pm

The woman took a deep breath. “Ms. Rosebrook, in the event of his and his wife’s deaths, Lucas has named you guardian of his son, Zayne.”

“What?!”

10-21-16_5-19-28-pm

Ms. Lange cleared her throat once more, reading from the crisp white paper on the desk in front of her. “In the event I am the sole surviving parent of any minor children at the time of my death, I appoint my sister, Jocelyne Rosebrook, to serve as their guardian.”

Jocelyne felt like she couldn’t breathe. “S-so… So you’re telling me… This means…?”

10-21-16_5-16-07-pm

“Should you accept… you will have full legal custody of your nephew. And, for all intents and purposes, he will be…”

My son.

And with that (and yes, bending my succession laws a bit 😛 ), I welcome you all to Generation Five: Zayne 🙂

    1. I think you’re correct on both counts — it will be interesting, but quite sad 😦 I am loving writing him already though. 😀

      Thanks so much for reading!

    2. Me too! I think the names of the triplets were the biggest plot twist so far for me! xD

      (Haha I’m joking.)

I feel for Zayne too. I wonder how he and Jocelyne will get along…and whether Jocelyne’s strained relationship with Lucas will affect his relationship with her. :/

  1. You know what, I’ve just reread the rules on the succession laws on the front page and none of them have been broken, actually. It’s quite impresive:

Strict Equality: The founder may be of either gender. However, only children of the opposite gender to the founder are eligible to be named heir.
Strict Traditional: To be eligible to be named heir, a child must be naturally born from their previous-generation parents and be able to trace an unbroken bloodline back to the founder.
First Born: The oldest, by order of joining the family, eligible living child is named heir.

Zayne is the oldest eligible generation 5 child – i.e. male, born biologically from the previous generation and has an unbroken bloodline back to the founder, so…. I’d actually suggest no rules have been broken, ha!

    1. You beat me to it! Hahaha. I think in a way, the rules have, at the very least, been BENT, as Zayne is not Joce’s biological child. But yes, he is the first-born male Gen 5 child and is directly descended from Alex, so… 😛 😀

      Like

  2. He’s the first born male of the gen hahaha. The rule is that the heir has to be of the opposite gender of the previous heir. That rule I am sticking to!

So since Joce is essentially adopting Zayne, he is her “first born” son 🙂 (my succession laws do say that adoption doesn’t count, but I say that it’s only *bending* the rules, as he is still biologically descended from Alex 🙂

And yes, he’s adorable and has Mark genes haha

    1. He is younger than the triplets, but his gender is the important part 🙂 That’s why Joce needed to have all girls. Otherwise one of them would have to be the heir

  3. OMG OMG OMG OMG! You got me! I bet you got most of us, bahahaha. All three girls! Whoa. Is she gonna move her whole American family to Windenburg? I wonder if Elliott will come. Oh this is gonna be so interesting. I’m suddenly very interested in Gen 5.

  4. I thought the triplets were boys! And aren’t Jocelyne gen 4 heir? Shouldn’t one of her girls (???) be the heir? I’m so confused :s

It was very touching though, that Lucas made her Zayne’s guardian.

    Like

    1. According to my succession laws, the heir has to be a boy, so the triplets are not eligible to be heirs. Zayne is the first born boy of the generation and is now legally Joce’s son, so he is now the heir 🙂

  5. WHAT? And all three are tomboys?

(Yeah, I’m not that surprised about Zayne. It makes sense.)

That’s gotta be against the succession laws. Not that I’m complaining. We get to have a red head as an heir. Brilliant! And question: is he going to have burn scars for the rest of his life? And are his scars cc or edited on?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahaha if you check out some other comments we have decided that I technically may not have broken any succession laws 😛

Zayne’s scar is cc that I actually requested someone to make for me. He will have it his whole life, poor kid! And when gen 5 officially begins ill link to the girl who made his scar ^_^

    2. I’m being be uber pedantic and say Zayne has not got Mark genes, he has Hazel genes, and Mark, since he was created through create a parent, has Hazel genes too. For us to get Mark genes, he needs to have a baby with Joce.

          1. Hahaha well we will have to wait and see! If they do get together, things would be quite complicated for Zayne’s family tree, that’s for sure!

  6. Yay! I was saying they were boys but now thinking about it I have relatives who are girls and we call them by short gender neutral names. Plus I don’t think you ever had Jocelyn call her children boys she just called them or talked about them by their names. Clever! I know it’s not her son biologically but I was thinking from the moment Luzel died Jocelyn’s act of atonement for her behavior with her brother would be to raise his son with love and tenderness she she felt she didn’t receive. It makes perfect sense! I was trying to figure out Zayne’s role with the gen 5 heir turns out he is the heir! Just when I think you outdone yourself you go and prove me wrong. This gen 5 is going to be awesome!

    1. I’m glad you’re so excited for Gen 5 now! ^_^ and yes, I was very careful to never use pronouns with the triplets, and Joce never thinks of them as “boys” or “sons” 😛 Hehehe

And yes, I think this will be something of an atonement for poor Joce!

      Like

    2. Alternatively, he will be spoiled and coddled because Joce feels guilty and doesn’t want to ‘break’ her relationship with the last remnants of her estranged brother.

There’s also the whole rebellious “You’re not my parent; you can’t tell me what to do!”. Constantly throwing her past up in her face, to the triplets (“At least my mom and dad were married”), to his grandfather…

If it’s not obvious, I kinda want an Evil sim in the mix.

  7. Guess I’m the only one who thinks Lucas leaving his son to Jocelyne is cruel 😛
Of course, they had no intentions of dying. Heck, they probably didn’t even consider the Mark factor. But, fact is, they’re dead, and now she’ll be forced to have Mark in her life forever whether they ever get together or not…and I think she’s beginning to see the light on that front. So cruel! I’m looking at YOU, author lady.

    Liked by 3 people

    1. Maybe unintentional cruelty on their part lmao but I assure you they had nothing but good intentions here!

Yes though, Mark and Joce are back in each other’s lives now, for better or worse haha This could go many ways. We will have to wait and see!

    2. I think if I was writing a will the past love life of the potential guardian would be the last thing on my mind. I’d just think about who would take best care of my kid, and who’d raise them with the same or similar values as mine. So no matter their complicated history, Joce would seem like an obvious choice for Lucas. A little bit more complicated with Hazel, but I guess she didn’t write a will. I mean, who would, at her age. I suppose Lucas did since as a known rockstar, he would have been the breadwinner. In his mind, he probably didn’t think about this scenario too deeply. He probably just wanted Hazel and Zayen to be ok if something happened to him. Good job he did acknowledge that something could happen to both of them!

      Liked by 2 people

      1. That’s pretty much what I said lol. I know they probably weren’t thinking about it. And Joce does seem like the obvious choice (despite the fact that she lives a zillion miles away). Doesn’t make her raising Mark’s grandchild any less cruel though lol.

        Liked by 2 people

      2. The rockstar status definitely contributed to him writing a will, yes haha. He was a millionaire so I think he wanted to make sure his money went to the right people. We are actually gonna have a small flashback touching upon this in gen 5 🙂

    OKAY
I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE ANDROGYNOUS NAMES BUT ALSO WRONG BECAUSE BASED ON THEIR APPEARANCES I ASSUMED THEY WERE BOYS
I would also like to say that you are very sneaky and I applaud you for your creativity with the legacy rules.

Oh, was this what Lucas was trying to tell Jocelyne? See, girl, you should have listened. Now you have no choice but to take care of four small children. I feel like some members of the family are going to be mad that Jocelyne gets Zayne. She’s been gone for eight years and she gets the last remnants of Luc and Hazel. I wonder why he did this, though. Jocelyne is the right age to be Zayne’s mother and everything, but she kinda has triplets already. Also, she lives in America and hadn’t seen her brother for six years.

This will definitely make things with Mark more awkward, geez. The whole “what will the kids call us” thing just got even worse. And now she’ll be forced to see him and the rest of her family because I don’t know if she can take him to America. I wonder how Elliot will react to this.

In conclusion, my mind has been blown. This did not go where I thought it would.

    1. I’m glad you were so surprised and enjoyed this twist!

It definitely was a complicated choice to pick Joce haha we will get a bit more insight about why he made the choice, but I think the simplest answer is that he trusts Joce to raise his kid more than anyone else. 🙂

  12. Oh wow, this was a huge plot twist! I like it, though. It makes choosing an heir between the triplets easier and I feel like this will be a good opportunity for Joce to feel like she is ‘making up’ for everything that happened between her and Luc; giving his son a good and happy life.

Haven’t been commeting on your past chapters much, I’m sorry 😦 my grandfather died in a house fire when I was fourteen (although he wasn’t physically burned, luckily, probably just lost consciousness due to the smoke) and it’s left me with anxiety issues that I still struggle with today, especially in times of stress. And since I’m currently under a lot of stress with exams, I figured it might be best to simply scan over them for the time being.
I hope you don’t feel offended! I still love your story and characters and will continue reading and commenting on gen 5 ❤

  13. Well – I was right! This was what Lucas wanted to tell her isn’t it? I almost said you were going to make Zayne the heir but I didn’t know how you would do it so I didn’t. 🙂 It was either her or Mark that would get guardianship. I am glad it was her. This does keep her and Mark very present in each other’s lives. I hate that she left him way too easily the next morning. That breaks my heart. If he wants her I think he is going to have to court her again, because it seems she is shutting the door on them this time instead of him. Oh Jocelyn, when will you start making better decisions about your own happiness.

Who will she call? Mark, Clara, her parents, Elliott? She has some heavy decisions to make once again. Of course we know she won’t refuse. But story wise, she can’t because she would never forgive herself. She will do it for Luc and Zayne too. I bet she decides she has to move back home. She won’t be able to take Zayne back to the US. He has suffered too much and needs to be around familiar faces and places. That begs the question – what about her own children. Will she ship them back and forth or will Elliot follow?

I am very excited that Zayne is the heir. It would have been anti-climatic had it been one of the triplets. He will have a lot to overcome growing up even with all of the love that his family will lavish on him. I think your readers already love him even though we haven’t really been introduced to him yet.

Another great plot twist…Keeping us all guessing. Of course we love to do that! 🙂

    1. We still don’t know what he wanted to tell her, but this is a good guess! 🙂

This is definitely going to have an impact on Mark and Joce, as they are kind of “forced” to be in each other’s lives now. And I totally think you’re right about Joce kind of “shutting the door” on thing right now. We’ll have to wait and see what happens!

We’ll find out soon how this effects her girls, as well as Elliot. Poor Zayne is not going to have an easy time of it. But I’m glad that you already love him haha I have written about 7 Gen 5 chapters so far and I love him too. ❤ Thank you for reading 🙂

I suppose you did it that way to make Zayne the heir and not one of the triplets. Because based on your interpretation of the Succession rules, the Gen 5 heir has to be male… Right? Hope I didn’t get confused. 😛

I figured that Joce would be named the guardian of Zayne. This is going to put Joce and Mark closer together, so hopefully, we get some progress on that front.

Did you seriously just leave Mark without talking at all, Joce? Hm :/

Anyway, great chapter! Loving all this plot-twisty drama! 😉

It’s sad to see Jocelyn hurting so much and leaving Mark before he wakes up, but I totally understand it. How can she possibly open up her heart again after the way he broke it!! Does this mean Jocelyn will move back to Windenburg?. Mark will have to feature in her life once again, that should be VERY interesting. And what about Elliott?! I can’t imagine him being happy if she goes back to Windenburg, they are his kids too. This is all so complicated, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!!!

  24. Jesus Christ, this generation gave me the feels. To be honest, I really did not like Lucas most of this generation – I was right beside Joce fuming at him. It honestly made it all that much worse when he died! ;_; It was a little strange once Zayne was born, because I knew he was heir and also knew he wasn’t Joce’s child, so I was wondering what was going to happen to make him heir. Despite that, I seriously was not expecting Luc to die. I dunno what I thought was going to happen, but I did not think THAT was going to happen.

Also, let me say, poor Elliot. That man is a saint. I’m glad Joce gets to be happy, but I don’t love her and Mark together. I did until he broke up with her, and even then I held out hope… but when he had sex with her at the wedding and acted like it was a mistake… I dunno. I was done. lol

I feel bad that you were spoiled about Zayne, though I’m glad you didn’t predict what would happen! And yes, Elliot is a true gem of a human being!
