4.51: Unexpected

So… I had a pretty unexpected visitor today.

Well, I guess any visitor besides Mark would have been pretty unexpected. I don’t have a lot of friends on campus, and Joel and Mei have been so busy with the baby that they don’t really have much time to visit. Especially without warning me first.

But this visitor definitely didn’t tell me she was coming… And I think I know why. I probably would have insisted she stay back at home. I haven’t seen my family at all in almost a month, except Clara. I’ve barely even spoken to them. And it’s easier that way. For all of us.

So needless to say, I was pretty surprised when Oma showed up on our doorstep this afternoon. I don’t think she’s ever visited us at school before, actually. Not since our first year, at least.

“What are you doing here?” I remember asking her.

Apparently Clara conveniently ‘forgot’ to tell me her Mama was stopping by visit. I didn’t buy it for a second, of course. Then Oma gave in, and said she just wanted to talk.

I didn’t even have to ask what about.

I knew what was coming. She was going to lecture me about avoiding my family. She was going to guilt me into talking to my parents and Luc again. She was going to remind me for the hundredth damn time how messed up my relationship is.

09-20-16_9-56-28-pm

But she didn’t.

I mean, she did tell me that I should try talking to my parents again. But not for the reason I thought. Oma says I need to sit down and talk to them. She thinks they’re finally ready to give Mark and I a chance. She said they’d calmed down a lot, and she really thinks they’d be willing to listen to me now – as long as I listen to them too.

“I think they’ll come around.” She told me. “But they can’t do that if you don’t talk to them.”

09-20-16_9-59-02-pm

At first I just kinda shrugged her off, but the more I thought about it, the more it started to feel like maybe it wouldn’t be such a terrible idea. I mean, it couldn’t hurt, could it? Things are already so shitty between my parents and I. How could they possibly get any worse?

Anyway, the more she talked to me, the better I started to feel. Even when I told her about what was going on here at school, and how weird Mark had been acting, and how worried I was that something bad would happen… It really helped to get it all out. And I actually felt pretty good by the time I was done.

09-20-16_9-58-30-pm

Oma didn’t judge me or try to lecture me. She just listened. And I think that was what I needed more than anything… Someone besides Clara who’d actually listen to me instead of yelling at me or making me feel like some kind of freak.

When I finished, she told me she understood why I was nervous… But she also said that I need to talk to Mark about how I’m feeling. “Really talk to him,” she said. No matter how hard it is.

And I know she’s right.

09-20-16_10-04-23-pm

If we don’t talk about it now, things will only get worse… And I don’t even wanna think about what could happen if they do.

I can’t lose Mark. I can’t. He’s the one good thing in my life right now. Maybe the only good thing I’ve ever really had. I can already feel us drifting farther and farther apart… And things can’t get any better if I don’t do something about it.

It’s like Oma told me… It’s not what anyone else says or thinks that matters. This is about us.

And if I want Mark and I to stay an ‘us’…

Well, I’m not giving up without a fight.

    1. Can’t 100% confirm, except to say that Mari was serious that she thinks Tobi and Colette have calmed down enough that she believes they can come around. As for Luc and Hazel… Well, who knows? Haha

  1. YAY daily updates. YAY Mari. I love her so it was nice that she got to do something this generation. Joce with the fighting talk, love it. It’s nice seeing her so strong-willed.

    1. Yes, Mari is really rallying to Joce’s side here. She’s Joce’s strongest supporter at home, and I think she’s really been trying to get the family on her side ^_^

And yes, Joce is strong and not giving up 😀

      1. Also, while I would like a civilised discussion to take place, I do hope the topics of A) Luc being inadvertently prioritised and B) Tobi treating Joce like a child are brought up.

  2. That expression on Jossy’s face in the last screenshot…

I can’t help but think it’s going to show up again (probably when Luc inevitably ends up being an uncaring prick about all this, when (or if) she ever decides to talk to him again) 😮

    1. Yes, my Mari is in such a wonderful place in her life. And it only took… How many years? LMAO She’s almost 60. The poor dear.

And yes, she’s definitely offered Joce a bit of hope! 🙂

  3. Talk to Mark, yes. Talk to your parents? No. Stop blocking them, sure; actually pick up the phone if they call, sure. Reach out? Nope. They rejected you, you *don’t* need to come sniveling back to them, begging for acceptance and affirmation.

    1. Hahaha I’m sure no sniveling or begging is in Joce’s plan 😛 She’s gonna hold her ground no matter what. But she is willing to give another chance, I think. 🙂

  4. Wooo! Daily updates! You spoil us. 😉

I love that Mari came to visit and showed support! She’s so mature now. 😀 It’s got Joce thinking more positively and she’s clearly feeling stronger now!

Talking=good! Just please let Toco be supportive..

    1. Glad you’re excited for daily updates hehehe. And yeah, Mari was so awesome here 🙂 She’s definitely given Joce an extra “boost”! Hopefully it will all work out from here and her parents will actually be supportive, as Mari suggested!

    1. I love how happy you are to see her! I missed her so much 🙂 It was so lovely to give her this moment of being on Joce’s side and giving her this little “pep talk”. Mari is Joce’s biggest supporter in the Rosebrook house (since Clara isn’t there) and she really wants to help her out 🙂

  5. YES DAILY UPDATES!!!!!! You literally just made my week. I’m really proud of Mari, and happy that she’s got her temper under control, and can look at others without judging them, unlike SOME PEOPLE in that family …

  6. Exactly, Mari knew she had to come to Joce — no way was Joce ever gonna come to anyone in the family hahaha. I loved writing this one. Mari has turned into such a gem ❤

And LOL I'm glad the Marklyne is taking precautions right now. Stormy conditions for sure.

  7. Ha! That face was gangsta lol. I love it.

    Mari,
    Nice move!

    Jocelyne,
I know you’re plugging your fingers in your ears and singing la la la, but I’m gonna say this anyway lol. You’re young, and a little naive. I know you’re in love, and I know even the thought of potentially losing Mark makes you feel like it’s the end of the world. However, you’re only 22 years old, girl. I know this relationship is the best thing you’ve had thus far, but if for some reason it doesn’t work out, your life will not be over! You’ll have like another 60+ years to have even more wonderful things. (sigh) She’s not listening, is she? Yeah…my 22-year-old self wouldn’t buy that speech either LOL. Keep fighting, girl! Don’t give up!

    1. Jocelyne just asked me if I could hear that annoying fly buzzing around her ears and if I could help swat it for her… 😛

      Nice try though? Hahaha

No but seriously, those are good words of advice. But right now, Jocelyne doesn’t want to even accept that as an option.

  8. Sorry I am late to the Marifest! Loved her in this chapter. 🙂 Everyone has already said it – she aged so well. And to give such good advice to Jocelyn. I loved the determined look on Jocelyn’s face at the end – she is going after a bucket and is gonna start bailing so they can begin the repairs on their ship…

So if Tobi and Colette get aboard the Marklyn – that really only leaves Luc and Hazel…and this could be a big thing because right now they think Tobi and Colette are still trying to sink Marklyn… If ToCo change sides – which is probably how Luzel will see it – then that will cause problems between them and Luc … If that happens, Jocelyn may not be able to bail fast enough…Marklyn might start sinking again unless MARK grabs a bucket and helps….Mark has to help and something tells me he will but maybe not at first…Thank the lord for daily updates! 🙂

    1. I’m so glad you loved Mari in this one too 🙂 So proud of her. She’ll always be my favorite Rosebrook.

And yes, if Tobi and Colette start supporting Marklyne (which it sounds like they might) that would definitely change things, I think! Like you said, Luc and Hazel would really be the only “obstacle” left…

But we’ll have to see what happens! And thanks to daily updates, we’ll see sooner rather than later 😀

  9. Mari is actually still an adult, technically. But with wrinkles hehehe. But yes, she’s still so lovely!

And she’s definitely doing the right thing right now! Loved writing her like this 🙂

  10. I love how calm Mari is being, it’s some serious character development! I love how great she’s being about it all. If only she was this calm about Colette and Josh 😉
