“This November, a new reign of terror begins…” The announcer’s deep voice boomed through the television’s speakers. “And this time… there WILL. BE. BLOOD.”
Moonlight Massacre. The title card appeared on the screen. Now in theaters.
Jocelyne finally found the remote a few seconds too late, turning off the TV with a soft click.
Stupid freaking trailer. Every Moonlight Massacre preview that popped up hit her like a slap in the face.
It was yet another painful reminder… And not the only one. Mark’s well-loved copy of The Half-Blood Prince still sat on her bookshelf, mocking her. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t escape…
Jocelyne’s thoughts were interrupted by a sudden knocking at the door. Her heart sank instantly. The only person who ever knocked was Elliot. Oh God, what does he want? She wondered as she reluctantly headed to the door. Yet another reminder of her recent mistakes…
But when she opened the door, it wasn’t Elliot on the other side.
—————————————————
Mark felt his breath catch in his throat at the sight of Jocelyne’s face. It had been nearly a week since he’d last seen her… Was it possible that she was truly more beautiful than he remembered? It certainly felt that way. She’s perfect.
“Hi, Jocelyne.” At last, he spoke. “I’m sorry to bother you at home.”
The poor girl still looked as though she’d seen a ghost. It seemed to take her a few moments to regain her composure. “It’s fine. I don’t mind.” From what he’d heard, Jocelyne was usually a brilliant actress… But she was failing miserably at masking her discomfort. “Would… you like to come in? Sit down?” She offered awkwardly.
Mark glanced over her shoulder at the small apartment beyond. He knew her aunt was surely home… And he much preferred to have this conversation somewhere more private.
Mark shook his head. “I was, um… Hoping we could maybe go for a walk?” He suggested. There was a small park nearby that was usually pretty quiet around this time.
“Okay.” Jocelyne agreed. She stepped past him, heading outside without another word.
Mark followed behind her, finally catching up when she reached the sidewalk.
“Shouldn’t you tell Clara you’re leaving?”
Jocelyne just shrugged. “She’s on the phone with her fiancé anyway. I really don’t want to interrupt.” She explained. “The doctor was finally able to confirm the gender of the babies this afternoon, and she’s been dying to tell him. She won’t even tell me yet.” A small smile came to her lips.
Mark found himself smiling too. Jocelyne did not talk about her family very often, but when she did, he loved listening to the way she spoke about them. “Well, congratulations to both of them.” He said sincerely.
Jocelyne said nothing as she continued walking beside him. It was all he could do not to stare at her. So instead, he chose to study the dark gray pavement on the ground in front of him.
“So…” He spoke again as they finally neared the park entrance. Mark tried to hide his nervousness as best he could. “You’re probably wondering why I’m here, huh?”
The girl shook her head. “I know why… And I’m sorry.” Jocelyne sighed. “It was awful of me to go over your head like that, and quit without giving any notice or anything… I shouldn’t have left you short-handed. And I can go back and work again until you find a replacement.” She promised.
I shouldn’t be surprised, should I? There it was again… That was his Jocelyne. Always thinking of others before herself. “That’s not the reason.” He assured her. “But thank you. I must admit, Theresa is… um… lacking a bit in her organizational skills.” Mark couldn’t help but laugh.
Beside him, Jocelyne did the same. “She tries, though.” She said weakly. “Kind of…”
It was a few moments before Mark’s laughter finally subsided. “I’m not mad at you for leaving.” He said seriously as they continued walking past the hedge and into the park at last. “I understand why… I was horrible to you. And I’m the one who’s sorry.”
“Don’t be. You were right… I was way out of line.” Jocelyne shook her head slowly. “I don’t know what came over me.”
The same thing that came over me. Mark thought as he took a seat beside her on the bench. From the moment we met. “Please, just… Stop apologizing, okay? I’m the only one who should be sorry. I never should have yelled at you like that.” He sighed, a feeling of shame suddenly washing over him. “When you started talking to me about how you felt, I just… panicked.” He hesitated a moment before continuing. “I totally lost it… Because you scare the shit out of me, Jocelyne.”
For a moment, Jocelyne appeared confused. “I… scare you?”
Alright. Mark told himself. Now or never. “I am absolutely terrified of how amazing you are.” He explained. “How kind. How smart. How funny. How… beautiful.” His eyes drank in the sight of her as he spoke, and his shame deepened. Jesus Christ, how the hell did I turn into some dirty old man? “You scare me… Because of how you make me feel.” He said at last.
Though she did not smile, Jocelyne’s beautiful eyes lit up then, so full of hope. “And… How do I make you feel?” She asked in a whisper. “Please… I want to hear you to say it.”
“No.” He turned his gaze away from hers, unable to look at her any longer. “It doesn’t matter how I feel, Jocelyne. Because it’s wrong. I mean, hell, you’re… what?” He hesitated. He wasn’t entirely sure how old Jocelyne actually was. “Twenty-four? Twenty-Five?”
“Um, close?” She replied softly. “Twenty-two.”
“Jesus.” Mark rubbed one of his large hands down his face, wishing he’d never asked. It was even worse than he imagined. “Christ, I’m forty-four, Jocelyne! Forty-four! I’m twice your age! I’m old enough to be your…” A wave of nausea bubbled up in his stomach. He couldn’t even finish the sentence.
“I know.” Jocelyne actually appeared almost amused. “Actually… You’re older than my parents.” She admitted. “But… they were really young when they had me.” She added quickly, smiling. “So that doesn’t really count, right?” Her voice was almost teasing.
“This isn’t a joke!” Mark burst angrily. “It can never work between us. It can’t.”
“But why not?!” Jocelyne’s smile faded instantly. “Yeah, it’s a little… unconventional. But so what? It shouldn’t matter, Mark! I’m younger than you, sure… But what difference does it make? I’m still an adult.”
“You’re practically a child!” He hissed. Oh God. He reached up, holding his face in his hands for a long time.
Jocelyne just stared at him, wide-eyed. “Oh yeah? That’s how you see me, huh?” She said at last, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Look me in the eye, Mark. Look me in the eye and say that again.”
Mark wasn’t quite sure what to say. He had never seen her like this before. So strong. So fierce… It was driving him wild. Jesus, now is not the time! He shook himself mentally, chasing the thoughts away.
He sighed softly, finally finding his voice. “You know I didn’t mean that.”
“Good.” The young girl’s expression finally softened. “Please, Mark. Why can’t we give this a chance?”
The man hesitated before replying. He wanted to try, more than anything. But we can’t… “Jocelyne, think of what people would say… I mean, what about your parents? I can hardly believe they’d be okay with this.” He said gently.
“I… I don’t care what my parents think!” For the briefest moment, her voice almost faltered. “I don’t care what anyone thinks but me. And do you know what I think?” She paused, her lips stretching into a smile.”That we were meant to be, Mark. And… That I love you.”
Mark was fairly certain his heart literally skipped a beat at her words. He said nothing.
“If you can look me in the eye and tell me you don’t feel the same, I’ll drop it.” Jocelyne promised. “I swear to God, Mark. I’ll leave you alone. I’ll move on. But I need to hear you say it.”
And, of course, he couldn’t. Because it was true – he felt it too. He wanted her. He loved her. And she knew it. God help me. Mark silently prayed.
At last, he broke the silence. “Look… I, uh… I’m sure you’ve been seeing all the previews on TV, right?”
“Huh?” Jocelyne furrowed her brow in confusion.
“For that crappy Moonlight Massacre remake.” Mark explained. “It opened today, didn’t it?”
The girl nodded.
“Well… What if tomorrow morning, we grab some coffee and go check it out?” He suggested. “As long as you promise not to puke on me.” He added with a smile.
Even if this all turned out to be the biggest mistake of his life, Mark knew he would always choose to make it if he could, time and time again. The way Jocelyne looked at him in that moment would make anything worth it.
“That sounds perfect.” Her voice was so sweet. Like music. “Let’s meet at that coffee shop on Birch Street.” Jocelyne suggested. “At around ten?”
He nodded, his eyes still tracing every inch of her beautiful face. “Works for me.”
“Great! Better than great, actually.” She laughed almost nervously. “So… It’s a date?”
Mark smiled. “It’s a date.”
Told ya the SS Marklyne was still sailing 🙂

He is! And with good reason, I think. If they met just a few years earlier, he’d have that same ass tossed in jail for statutory. When you get to a certain age, you just have to start blocking sections of the population off mentally as ‘jailbait enough that I don’t want to risk it.

This is a great point hahaha It’s all about timing! Jocelyne is just a few years old enough that it’s ok for them to be together, but he knows it’s a very unconventional relationship. Part of why he was so hesitant. But sometimes you just have to listen to your heart!

S.S Marklyne analysis progress: 100% done.
Despite their big age difference, Mark and Joce look great together and I was expecting them to not to see each other anymore. Surprisingly, they did. I knew Mark had feelings for her. He just was afraid to admit that. That’s my thinking. I couldn’t believe he told Joce that’s she’s a child, but I’m glad Mark apologized afterwards. People are sometimes afraid to admit their feelings to someone.

That was a great analysis! Hahaha And yeah. That was a very impulsive reaction for him to say that! Good thing he apologized haha

I’m glad you’re excited! I will let you know that we won’t get to see the actual date, but we’re gonna hear from Joce in the next chapter about how things are going with her and Mark! Hopefully no awkward moments, like you said. Eek!

I’m glad he apologised, though for goodness sake mark you don’t go ‘YOU’RE WONDERFUL AND I CAN’T LOVE YOU’ because that is some reverse Mr Darcy s**t (mr darcy was all ‘your family suck and you’re poor and well below me but i love you’ which was just as dumb).
Honestly dude, mixed signals ahoy. Still, for Joce’s sake I hope the date goes well. Mark, you need a bit more effort to get back in my good books =p

Lmao that comparison made me laugh a little. Yeah, I guess it was some mixed signals! Like the chapter title said, Mark is terrified haha. This relationship is a big risk for both of them!

4. Yup, I wanted it clear from the get-go that the man is smitten! 😀
5. Yeah, he was fully intending on letting Joce down again (but in a much nicer way!) so public was best haha
6. That’s my Joce! She’s a good girl 🙂
7. Or should I say, that’s HIS Joce? 😉
8. Yup, she carries herself and behaves so maturely that he’d pegged her for a bit older… Whoops!
9. I love your optimism! ^_^

Yes yes! A thousand times YES! Finally they happened, and it was about time he confessed hid feeling to her. We all knew how he felt. If this was the real world we would all have ganged up on him saying “wake up Mark! Don’t let her slip away!” and he would panick even more because he got cornered. Then when we had scattered he would sit by himself, thinking it over and come to the same conclussipn he did at the end just now.
I get his fear of how people would react. But in real love it shouldn’t matter. Not one bit. And I’m so happy and relieved that he finally asked her out on a date.
I was actually afraid for a moment that he wouldn’t give in. My heart skipped a beat at tje kissong scene. It was so romantic :3 they definitely deserve each other. And they are a perfect fit.
Now i hope that Mark isn’t gonna back out of this. I can just imagine it: he meets her parents, they flip out about how old he is compsted to her. He feels bad about it and decides to end things before things gets out of hand between koce and her parents. I think it is a likely scenario. Hopefully their love will last!
Awesome chapter! I had been looking forward to this one for a while 😀

You can really see Mark's inner battle here, and I love it, even though it's probably not going to be plain sailing for them, since it's evident he still has reservations.
Also, can we just talk about how awesome Joce is? I love when she has these fierce moments where she goes after what she wants or what she thinks is right and completely ditches her regular timid and ultra-selfless "I-do-everything-for-others" behaviour. We've seen these ever since she was a teen, and as she gets older and more confident, there's more and more of them. I feel like she has the potential to grow into a really strong woman someday.

Thank you! ^_^ Yeah, Mark is most definitely fighting a battle with himself… Between what his heart wants, and what is “right” (by society’s standards). It’s hard for him!
And I love what you said about Joce. It’s so true! She is still relatively reserved/quiet/looking out for others, but there is definitely a fiery side of her that comes out from time to time! And it was in full force here — she is willing to fight for what her heart wants!

Boya! That is what I’m talking about! You go girl, let the world think what they want, because, like I heard somewhere:”Screw everything! This will go down in history as one of my favorite chapters.
And I promise–let everyone who reads this comment stand in witness–that I will never NEVER accuse Jocelyne of inaction ever again.
Jocelyne is my shero
Jocelyne is an inspiration to us all.
Damn, girl, as soon as you recognized your love for what it was, you went for it, balls to the walls, no regrets. Even though you broke your own heart, you did what your heart felt was best. And you’re about to be rewarded for it. Not that it would’ve made a difference either way. Going for what you want is always a great thing (even if I still have reservations about how you went about it).
Never thought I’d say this. We could all stand to be more like Jocelyne.
Okay, I’m done. I just really fucking loved this chapter.

This comment made me so happy! You are too sweet! I love that this is one of your favorites. I really loved writing this one too. 🙂
And I love that you changed your perspective on Joce 🙂 When she wants something, she will go for it. She can most definitely be timid and spend a lot of time worrying/internalizing her feelings when it comes to others. That part of her will never completely go away, because it’s part of who she is.
But I think she really wants to be happy, and was not about to let Mark slip away now that she knew how he felt. She’s tired of sitting on the sidelines while Lucas and Clara get to be happy. It’s her turn 🙂

I had a feeling the age difference was the issue for him, poor guy is pretty confused and worried about it – especially what everyone else would think and how it could impact their lives. (It’s weird how as early as the early 20th Century it was perfectly natural for men to be twice the age of their partner within Western society. Somewhere along the line this changed and we’re seeing a reemergence of couples from either sex being with someone much older or younger than them. Society is very strange indeed, I wonder when it changed and why?)
Anyway, it’s great to see Joce being defiant and standing up for what she believes. Go Joce! 😀 I look forward to seeing how they went on their date 🙂 Joce reeled him in, that’s for sure! The kiss solidified that, especially if the goofy loving look on Mark’s face afterward has anything to say about it 😉 😛 XD

Glad you enjoyed the POV in this one 😉 And yeah, it’s so strange how society changes so much!!!
I loved feisty Joce, and I know mark did too 😉
(Sorry my replies to your wonderful comments are so brief. I’m on my phone!)

Haha No worries 😀
Regarding society and age difference, I wonder if I’ll get to write an essay on it one day (since my Majors are Sociology and History – it fits will 😛 ). I think I’m going to research about it regardless because I’m certainly curious 😉
Yay for feisty Joce, I loved seeing her really making her point heard. So awesome 😀 ❤

Yay! I still can’t trust you though, because you said it only gets worse XD I’m waiting for some giant meteor to just come out of the sky and squash Mark any second now.

I knew it was going to happen. You could tell by the way the two of them interacted together. 🙂

If only you could see the huge smile on my face right now. I knew he had feelings for her also. Now I’m not sure how far this will actually go but I’m so glad that it’s going somewhere 😁🤗😍

We did know that he likes her 😉 I unfortunately do have a feeling, however, that it will turn out their relationship just isn’t to be, which will lead to heartbreak and probably some drastic character change on Joce’s part, which will lead her to finding herself again and then finally finding her real soulmate.
But if she can skip all that and be happy with Mark, great!

Hahahaha the scenario you describe is definitely possible… But hopefully not! 😮 Guess time will tell….

Ngggh…. they’re two consenting adults so I’m TRYING not to judge too harshly… but… it’s hard. Ten years is a huge difference already, let alone 22 years. I know there’s couples that can make it work, but…. nghhh. And the position of him having been her boss, and being way more experienced, and… nope. I don’t like it.

Yeah, I knew this age difference would be challenging for some people when I wrote this, so I completely understand! Mark and Joce are actually my favorite A2A ship I’ve ever had haha butttttt I know they aren’t for everyone, and that’s fine!
