Interlude: Terrified

08-30-16_9-16-36 PM

“This November, a new reign of terror begins…” The announcer’s deep voice boomed through the television’s speakers. “And this time… there WILL. BE. BLOOD.”

Moonlight Massacre. The title card appeared on the screen. Now in theaters.

Jocelyne finally found the remote a few seconds too late, turning off the TV with a soft click.

08-30-16_9-17-38 PM

Stupid freaking trailer. Every Moonlight Massacre preview that popped up hit her like a slap in the face.

It was yet another painful reminder… And not the only one. Mark’s well-loved copy of The Half-Blood Prince still sat on her bookshelf, mocking her. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t escape…

08-30-16_9-18-03 PM

Jocelyne’s thoughts were interrupted by a sudden knocking at the door. Her heart sank instantly. The only person who ever knocked was Elliot. Oh God, what does he want? She wondered as she reluctantly headed to the door. Yet another reminder of her recent mistakes…

08-30-16_9-19-06 PM

But when she opened the door, it wasn’t Elliot on the other side.

Mark felt his breath catch in his throat at the sight of Jocelyne’s face. It had been nearly a week since he’d last seen her… Was it possible that she was truly more beautiful than he remembered? It certainly felt that way. She’s perfect.

08-30-16_9-20-49 PM

“Hi, Jocelyne.” At last, he spoke. “I’m sorry to bother you at home.”

The poor girl still looked as though she’d seen a ghost. It seemed to take her a few moments to regain her composure. “It’s fine. I don’t mind.” From what he’d heard, Jocelyne was usually a brilliant actress… But she was failing miserably at masking her discomfort. “Would… you like to come in? Sit down?” She offered awkwardly.

08-30-16_9-22-28 PM

Mark glanced over her shoulder at the small apartment beyond. He knew her aunt was surely home… And he much preferred to have this conversation somewhere more private.

Mark shook his head. “I was, um… Hoping we could maybe go for a walk?” He suggested. There was a small park nearby that was usually pretty quiet around this time.

“Okay.” Jocelyne agreed. She stepped past him, heading outside without another word.

08-30-16_9-24-52 PM

Mark followed behind her, finally catching up when she reached the sidewalk.

“Shouldn’t you tell Clara you’re leaving?”

Jocelyne just shrugged. “She’s on the phone with her fiancé anyway. I really don’t want to interrupt.” She explained. “The doctor was finally able to confirm the gender of the babies this afternoon, and she’s been dying to tell him. She won’t even tell me yet.” A small smile came to her lips.

08-30-16_9-27-25 PM

Mark found himself smiling too. Jocelyne did not talk about her family very often, but when she did, he loved listening to the way she spoke about them. “Well, congratulations to both of them.” He said sincerely.

Jocelyne said nothing as she continued walking beside him. It was all he could do not to stare at her. So instead, he chose to study the dark gray pavement on the ground in front of him.

08-30-16_9-29-40 PM

“So…” He spoke again as they finally neared the park entrance. Mark tried to hide his nervousness as best he could. “You’re probably wondering why I’m here, huh?”

The girl shook her head. “I know why… And I’m sorry.” Jocelyne sighed. “It was awful of me to go over your head like that, and quit without giving any notice or anything… I shouldn’t have left you short-handed. And I can go back and work again until you find a replacement.” She promised.

I shouldn’t be surprised, should I? There it was again… That was his Jocelyne. Always thinking of others before herself. “That’s not the reason.” He assured her. “But thank you. I must admit, Theresa is… um… lacking a bit in her organizational skills.” Mark couldn’t help but laugh.

08-30-16_9-34-36 PM

Beside him, Jocelyne did the same. “She tries, though.” She said weakly. “Kind of…”

It was a few moments before Mark’s laughter finally subsided. “I’m not mad at you for leaving.” He said seriously as they continued walking past the hedge and into the park at last. “I understand why… I was horrible to you. And I’m the one who’s sorry.”

“Don’t be. You were right… I was way out of line.” Jocelyne shook her head slowly. “I don’t know what came over me.”

08-30-16_9-36-25 PM

The same thing that came over me. Mark thought as he took a seat beside her on the bench. From the moment we met. “Please, just… Stop apologizing, okay? I’m the only one who should be sorry. I never should have yelled at you like that.” He sighed, a feeling of shame suddenly washing over him. “When you started talking to me about how you felt, I just… panicked.” He hesitated a moment before continuing. “I totally lost it… Because you scare the shit out of me, Jocelyne.”

08-30-16_9-37-18 PM

For a moment, Jocelyne appeared confused. “I… scare you?”

Alright. Mark told himself. Now or never. “I am absolutely terrified of how amazing you are.” He explained. “How kind. How smart. How funny. How… beautiful.” His eyes drank in the sight of her as he spoke, and his shame deepened. Jesus Christ, how the hell did I turn into some dirty old man? “You scare me… Because of how you make me feel.” He said at last.

Though she did not smile, Jocelyne’s beautiful eyes lit up then, so full of hope. “And… How do I make you feel?” She asked in a whisper. “Please… I want to hear you to say it.”

08-30-16_9-39-44 PM

“No.” He turned his gaze away from hers, unable to look at her any longer. “It doesn’t matter how I feel, Jocelyne. Because it’s wrong. I mean, hell, you’re… what?” He hesitated. He wasn’t entirely sure how old Jocelyne actually was.  “Twenty-four? Twenty-Five?”

“Um, close?” She replied softly. “Twenty-two.”

Jesus.” Mark rubbed one of his large hands down his face, wishing he’d never asked. It was even worse than he imagined. “Christ, I’m forty-four, Jocelyne! Forty-four! I’m twice your age! I’m old enough to be your…” A wave of nausea bubbled up in his stomach. He couldn’t even finish the sentence.

08-30-16_9-42-16 PM

“I know.” Jocelyne actually appeared almost amused. “Actually… You’re older than my parents.” She admitted. “But… they were really young when they had me.” She added quickly, smiling. “So that doesn’t really count, right?” Her voice was almost teasing.

“This isn’t a joke!” Mark burst angrily. “It can never work between us. It can’t.”

08-30-16_9-43-52 PM

“But why not?!” Jocelyne’s smile faded instantly. “Yeah, it’s a little… unconventional. But so what? It shouldn’t matter, Mark! I’m younger than you, sure… But what difference does it make? I’m still an adult.”

“You’re practically a child!” He hissed. Oh God. He reached up, holding his face in his hands for a long time.

Jocelyne just stared at him, wide-eyed. “Oh yeah? That’s how you see me, huh?” She said at last, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Look me in the eye, Mark. Look me in the eye and say that again.”

08-30-16_9-43-16 PM

Mark wasn’t quite sure what to say. He had never seen her like this before. So strong. So fierce… It was driving him wild. Jesus, now is not the time! He shook himself mentally, chasing the thoughts away.

He sighed softly, finally finding his voice. “You know I didn’t mean that.”

08-30-16_9-47-23 PM

“Good.” The young girl’s expression finally softened. “Please, Mark. Why can’t we give this a chance?”

The man hesitated before replying. He wanted to try, more than anything. But we can’t… “Jocelyne, think of what people would say… I mean, what about your parents? I can hardly believe they’d be okay with this.” He said gently.

08-30-16_9-48-13 PM

“I… I don’t care what my parents think!” For the briefest moment, her voice almost faltered. “I don’t care what anyone thinks but me. And do you know what I think?” She paused, her lips stretching into a smile.”That we were meant to be, Mark. And… That I love you.”

Mark was fairly certain his heart literally skipped a beat at her words. He said nothing.

08-30-16_9-52-05 PM

“If you can look me in the eye and tell me you don’t feel the same, I’ll drop it.” Jocelyne promised. “I swear to God, Mark. I’ll leave you alone. I’ll move on. But I need to hear you say it.”

And, of course, he couldn’t. Because it was true – he felt it too. He wanted her. He loved her. And she knew it. God help me. Mark silently prayed.

At last, he broke the silence. “Look… I, uh… I’m sure you’ve been seeing all the previews on TV, right?”

08-30-16_9-52-46 PM

“Huh?” Jocelyne furrowed her brow in confusion.

“For that crappy Moonlight Massacre remake.” Mark explained. “It opened today, didn’t it?”

The girl nodded.

08-30-16_9-53-34 PM

“Well… What if tomorrow morning, we grab some coffee and go check it out?” He suggested. “As long as you promise not to puke on me.” He added with a smile.

Even if this all turned out to be the biggest mistake of his life, Mark knew he would always choose to make it if he could, time and time again. The way Jocelyne looked at him in that moment would make anything worth it.

08-30-16_9-56-27 PM

“That sounds perfect.” Her voice was so sweet. Like music. “Let’s meet at that coffee shop on Birch Street.” Jocelyne suggested. “At around ten?”

He nodded, his eyes still tracing every inch of her beautiful face. “Works for me.”

08-30-16_9-57-23 PM

“Great! Better than great, actually.” She laughed almost nervously. “So… It’s a date?”

Mark smiled. “It’s a date.”

    1. He is! And with good reason, I think. If they met just a few years earlier, he’d have that same ass tossed in jail for statutory. When you get to a certain age, you just have to start blocking sections of the population off mentally as ‘jailbait enough that I don’t want to risk it.

      1. This is a great point hahaha It’s all about timing! Jocelyne is just a few years old enough that it’s ok for them to be together, but he knows it’s a very unconventional relationship. Part of why he was so hesitant. But sometimes you just have to listen to your heart!

  1. Analyzing the S.S Marklyne. 0%

S.S Marklyne analysis progress: 100% done.
Despite their big age difference, Mark and Joce look great together and I was expecting them to not to see each other anymore. Surprisingly, they did. I knew Mark had feelings for her. He just was afraid to admit that. That’s my thinking. I couldn’t believe he told Joce that’s she’s a child, but I’m glad Mark apologized afterwards. People are sometimes afraid to admit their feelings to someone.

    1. I’m glad you’re excited! I will let you know that we won’t get to see the actual date, but we’re gonna hear from Joce in the next chapter about how things are going with her and Mark! Hopefully no awkward moments, like you said. Eek!

  2. I had the most stupid and widest grin on my face when reading this!!!!! I could not stop smiling!!! I just loved it soooo much!! I just love the whole thought of these two being together, perhaps more so than any other couple to date in your story!!

  3. I’m glad he apologised, though for goodness sake mark you don’t go ‘YOU’RE WONDERFUL AND I CAN’T LOVE YOU’ because that is some reverse Mr Darcy s**t (mr darcy was all ‘your family suck and you’re poor and well below me but i love you’ which was just as dumb).
Honestly dude, mixed signals ahoy. Still, for Joce’s sake I hope the date goes well. Mark, you need a bit more effort to get back in my good books =p

    1. Lmao that comparison made me laugh a little. Yeah, I guess it was some mixed signals! Like the chapter title said, Mark is terrified haha. This relationship is a big risk for both of them!

  4. I loved your breakdown!!!! I’ll try to respond in a similar fashion haha.

    1. isn’t that funny? That’s the actual “Moonlight Massacre 3” movie in the game!

    2. One of my personal favorites too!

    3. I would have loved to see that reaction! Hahaha

    4. Yup, I wanted it clear from the get-go that the man is smitten! 😀

    5. Yeah, he was fully intending on letting Joce down again (but in a much nicer way!) so public was best haha

    6. That’s my Joce! She’s a good girl 🙂

    7. Or should I say, that’s HIS Joce? 😉

    8. Yup, she carries herself and behaves so maturely that he’d pegged her for a bit older… Whoops!

    9. I love your optimism! ^_^

    10. 😄😁😊

And honestly, I don’t think Mark had any negative thoughts toward Elliot. He could see that he treated Joce well and she was happy with him (at least at first!) 🙂

    1. Hahaha to be honest, that actually irritated me LMAO (is it bad to admit that!! Sorry!) It felt like everyone was just blindly shipping Joce with any male in the area! I was like “noooo you’re supposed to see how cute they are together and THEN ship them based on actual interactions!” Haha

So yes, we have come a long way! But I give a special shoutout to the few people who waited to get to know Mark before shipping them 😛

    1. Hahahahaha everyone else is cheering, but Jess has learned to never get too excited… Lmao 😂 No but seriously, this relationship is a big risk for both of them, so it’s right to have a bit of hesitation. But for right now at least, they are both head over heels haha

  5. Pretty much haha he was actually HAPPY she was in a relationship. It means he didn’t really have to deal with his feelings for her because she had a boyfriend anyway so none of it mattered. 😛

  6. Yes yes! A thousand times YES! Finally they happened, and it was about time he confessed hid feeling to her. We all knew how he felt. If this was the real world we would all have ganged up on him saying “wake up Mark! Don’t let her slip away!” and he would panick even more because he got cornered. Then when we had scattered he would sit by himself, thinking it over and come to the same conclussipn he did at the end just now.

I get his fear of how people would react. But in real love it shouldn’t matter. Not one bit. And I’m so happy and relieved that he finally asked her out on a date.

I was actually afraid for a moment that he wouldn’t give in. My heart skipped a beat at tje kissong scene. It was so romantic :3 they definitely deserve each other. And they are a perfect fit.

Now i hope that Mark isn’t gonna back out of this. I can just imagine it: he meets her parents, they flip out about how old he is compsted to her. He feels bad about it and decides to end things before things gets out of hand between koce and her parents. I think it is a likely scenario. Hopefully their love will last!

Awesome chapter! I had been looking forward to this one for a while 😀

    1. I’m so glad you loved this one!!! And I must admit I do love that little kiss at the end. It was so sweet and innocent and pure. I love Marklyne lmao

I think the scenario you described (Mark backing out) is definitely something that could potentially happen. But we’ll have to wait and see! Hard to say right now how her parents will react anyway.

      Thanks for the great comment!

  7. Oh yay! I understand Mark’s reservations, but I think they could make it work…however this is a long generation so….I’m glad things are working out. Also, I’m glad Mark came to see her.

    A) You’ve got a mod that gets rid of the hearts.
    B) How did you get their lips to touch? In my game, their lips NEVER touch!
    C) I knew that Mark would at least try to fight for Joce.
    D) I like how you chose a horror film which has been the talk of the generation to be in this update. I never realised the significance until now.
    E) Woah, I did not expect Mark to be the ones with insecurities.
    F) Which means Joce has grown up a lot.
    G) I’m tempted to slap him for calling Joce a child.
    H) But I won’t because he seemed sorry.
    I) I’m done with the alphabet comments now, I promise.

      B) No idea, honestly! They rarely touch in my game either! Maybe this is a sign Marklyne is meant to be 😛

      C) You were right!

      D) Hahaha Moonlight Massacre is definitely a shared interest of theirs! And it spans generations 😉

      E) Yup, he’s quite insecure himself!

      F) She really has 🙂

  9. YES YES YES! Consider me fully converted, just baptise me in the river of Marklyne. I always liked them together, but it was never quite like Tobi and Colette or Alex and Jade. However, seeing Mark’s point of view and how much he cares about her, and thinks about her as ‘his’ Jocelyne just made my heart melt.

And GO JOCE, for finally putting her own interests first! You go get you some of that naughty librarian, girl!

This probably went shooting to my top five favorite chapters ❤

I’m glad this converted you! They are so adorable together. I never realized how much I shipped them until I started writing and screenshotting them together. They are such a great match!

        1. I mentioned it back in the first chapter we saw it( which I know was a while ago!). The apartment was a joint effort between ra3rei and JoieWilder ^_^ Rae made the living room and dining room area, and Joie made their bedrooms (though I added a couple cc decorations and family photos to the bedrooms. That was my tiny contribution hahaha)

  10. Aaaaaaaawwwww ❤

You can really see Mark's inner battle here, and I love it, even though it's probably not going to be plain sailing for them, since it's evident he still has reservations.

Also, can we just talk about how awesome Joce is? I love when she has these fierce moments where she goes after what she wants or what she thinks is right and completely ditches her regular timid and ultra-selfless "I-do-everything-for-others" behaviour. We've seen these ever since she was a teen, and as she gets older and more confident, there's more and more of them. I feel like she has the potential to grow into a really strong woman someday.

    1. Thank you! ^_^ Yeah, Mark is most definitely fighting a battle with himself… Between what his heart wants, and what is “right” (by society’s standards). It’s hard for him!

And I love what you said about Joce. It’s so true! She is still relatively reserved/quiet/looking out for others, but there is definitely a fiery side of her that comes out from time to time! And it was in full force here — she is willing to fight for what her heart wants!

  11. Boya! That is what I’m talking about! You go girl, let the world think what they want, because, like I heard somewhere:”Screw everything! I Am In love! ” and you bet tell Your aunt about this, and you feelings to him, because Your family might not accept an older men with int youger lady! They might have their concerns!

  12. I feel for you, Jocelyne, being together with a guy twice your age always draws some weird comments… my partner is older than my mother, that’s certainly weird sometimes…
    But go for it!
Consider me on board of Marklyne as well 😀

    1. I’m glad you’re so supportive of this ship! 😀 And I’m glad that you have a positive relationship with your partner, despite some of the challenges!

I know this topic is quite close to home for you, so as some of the difficulties surrounding their relationship get explored more in-depth, I hope it’s okay for you. 🙂 I want you to be comfortable!

  13. *one thousand contented sighs*

They’re not even together yet, but I heart them so much. This line:

“I shouldn’t be surprised, should I? There it was again… That was his Jocelyne. Always thinking of others before herself.”

I can’t even. All the feels. So much there. Just… ugh, wonderful.

This will go down in history as one of my favorite chapters.

And I promise–let everyone who reads this comment stand in witness–that I will never NEVER accuse Jocelyne of inaction ever again.

    Jocelyne is my shero

Jocelyne is an inspiration to us all.

Damn, girl, as soon as you recognized your love for what it was, you went for it, balls to the walls, no regrets. Even though you broke your own heart, you did what your heart felt was best. And you’re about to be rewarded for it. Not that it would’ve made a difference either way. Going for what you want is always a great thing (even if I still have reservations about how you went about it).

Never thought I’d say this. We could all stand to be more like Jocelyne.

Okay, I’m done. I just really fucking loved this chapter.

    1. This comment made me so happy! You are too sweet! I love that this is one of your favorites. I really loved writing this one too. 🙂

And I love that you changed your perspective on Joce 🙂 When she wants something, she will go for it. She can most definitely be timid and spend a lot of time worrying/internalizing her feelings when it comes to others. That part of her will never completely go away, because it’s part of who she is.

But I think she really wants to be happy, and was not about to let Mark slip away now that she knew how he felt. She’s tired of sitting on the sidelines while Lucas and Clara get to be happy. It’s her turn 🙂

Hmm…Mark, you were let back almost a little bit too easily. Wanted just the tiniest bit more groveling. Still love you, though ❤

I'm really happy that they went for what they wanted. The S.S Marklyne shall sail!

This chapter just made me smile. 🙂

  15. Whoa, Mark is 44?! Gonna have to step off the Markelyn ship… Sorry. It weirds me out that he’s double her age. My parents were 11 years apart, and I thought THAT was testing the limits. But 22 years apart? Goodness…
Nothing personal, I’m just a little weirded out. Carry on 🙂

  16. I’m so happy for them! And the kiss was sweet. Just perfect.
I’m wondering, was this couple your plan from the beginning or have the readers influenced you? I admit that Mark caught my eye the first moment he appeared on the scene and I didn’t even see his face yet! 😀 They were meant to be indeed.

    1. I’m glad you’re happy for them and enjoyed this chapter! I loved doing this one, and am rather fond of that kiss myself! ^_^

Haha believe it or not this was planned from the time Joce was a baby back in Gen 3 (Rae and Joie are witnesses to this… They knew all about the hunky librarian who’d steal Joce’s heart before he even had a name haha). Joce was always going to fall for a much older man!

Believe it or not I was mildly annoyed at first by the Mark and Joce shipping before he even had a face or name LMAO but overall I am glad this ship has been well received because it’s close to my heart 🙂

  17. I’ve never commented before, but I’ve been in the shadows for a while (like, since mid-first generation a while ;)) Relationships with people older than five years kinda weird me out in fiction (not IRL though … which is kinda weird) but Joce being happy is ALL I care about. She reminds me SO MUCH of me, it’s kinda scary. I’M ROOTING FOR YOU, JOCE!!!!!!!

    1. Thank you so much for commenting ^_^ (and following my story. It means a lot to me!). Feel free to share your thoughts any time 🙂

Big age gaps can be hard to swallow. I totally get that haha but I do appreciate that you’re rooting for Jocelyne’s happiness right now! And Mark most definitely makes her happy ^_^

      Thank you again!

  18. Ah there we go, Finally caught up. Jocelyne and Mark seem like a decent match though I was like “Oh fuck what if he’s married and he turns out to be another creep!” Good to see he’s not a creep based on his internal monologue here, Eh 44 and 22 ain’t to bad, but I have a skewed view since I went on a couple dates with a guy who was 42 when I was 21 so I mean eeh.

Other thoughts now that I caught up,,, Oh Auggy! I hope you tell your Mom and Dad soon, poor Tobi getting the wrong idea, I’m rooting for you to find a nice guy!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m glad you caught up! 😀 And yes, Mark is the real deal — not a creep for sure! Thankfully hahaha

And speaking of Auggy… In 2-3 chapters we will get an update on his situation! ^_^

  19. I don’t want to say this, don’t want to be it, but I’m boarding the ship. There are points that age is just a number. Right now, I’m not fully sitting with that point, since he’s currently twice her age, but in a few years of them dating… I’ll totally be okay with the difference in age.

    Liked by 1 person

  20. It was so great to read this from Marks POV. Very enlightening 😉

I had a feeling the age difference was the issue for him, poor guy is pretty confused and worried about it – especially what everyone else would think and how it could impact their lives. (It’s weird how as early as the early 20th Century it was perfectly natural for men to be twice the age of their partner within Western society. Somewhere along the line this changed and we’re seeing a reemergence of couples from either sex being with someone much older or younger than them. Society is very strange indeed, I wonder when it changed and why?)

Anyway, it’s great to see Joce being defiant and standing up for what she believes. Go Joce! 😀 I look forward to seeing how they went on their date 🙂 Joce reeled him in, that’s for sure! The kiss solidified that, especially if the goofy loving look on Mark’s face afterward has anything to say about it 😉 😛 XD

    1. Glad you enjoyed the POV in this one 😉 And yeah, it’s so strange how society changes so much!!!

I loved feisty Joce, and I know mark did too 😉

(Sorry my replies to your wonderful comments are so brief. I’m on my phone!)

      1. Haha No worries 😀

Regarding society and age difference, I wonder if I’ll get to write an essay on it one day (since my Majors are Sociology and History – it fits will 😛 ). I think I’m going to research about it regardless because I’m certainly curious 😉

Yay for feisty Joce, I loved seeing her really making her point heard. So awesome 😀 ❤

  21. Yay! I still can’t trust you though, because you said it only gets worse XD I’m waiting for some giant meteor to just come out of the sky and squash Mark any second now.

  22. If only you could see the huge smile on my face right now. I knew he had feelings for her also. Now I’m not sure how far this will actually go but I’m so glad that it’s going somewhere 😁🤗😍

  23. We did know that he likes her 😉 I unfortunately do have a feeling, however, that it will turn out their relationship just isn’t to be, which will lead to heartbreak and probably some drastic character change on Joce’s part, which will lead her to finding herself again and then finally finding her real soulmate.

But if she can skip all that and be happy with Mark, great!
