Interlude: Listen

Tobi tried his best to stifle a yawn as he headed up the porch steps in the darkness. He couldn’t wait to climb into bed and fall asleep. The game had been a complete disaster – a crushing defeat worse than they’d had all season. It had certainly taken a heavy toll on both his body and mind. I could sleep for a week. He thought to himself as he opened the heavy front door.

07-12-16_10-41-06 PM

His eyes widened at the sight of his wife standing in the entryway, waiting for him. It was nearly eleven o’clock at night. On the days they did not accompany him to his games, Tobi was used to returning home to find his family already asleep, or at least locked away in their bedrooms settling in for the night.

07-12-16_10-47-35 PM

Tobi couldn’t help the crushing feeling of guilt that seemed to suddenly crash down upon him at the sight of Colette’s face. It had been a few days since he’d ended things with Anna, but he was still struggling. He was just so horrified and ashamed of himself… and still so lost about how to fix things with his wife. He’d tried talking to her so many times, but he always ended up failing… miserably. Where could he even begin? What could he possibly say to her? Tobi still wasn’t sure.

“Hey, honey.” He said at last, smiling gently. “What’s –”

07-12-16_10-44-11 PM

“Tobi, look at this.” Colette held out her palm. In it, she held a small cylindrical object. “Look at what I found.”

For a moment, Tobi’s eyes narrowed in confusion. It almost looked like… “A pregnancy test?” He muttered.

07-12-16_10-59-40 PM

Colette nodded gravely. “A negative one, thank God. But still… We both know there’s only two people this could have come from.” His wife sighed. She didn’t even have to say their names. “They were both acting so weird all morning… And this explains it. How did I not notice before?” She shook her head as she crossed to the opposite side of the hall and placed the test on the small table. “It just doesn’t make sense… They don’t even have boyfriends! Who could they possibly be having sex with? Are they being safe?” Colette was panicking now, her words spilling out faster and faster as she continued. “Obviously not, if it had to come to this… I’m so scared, Tobi. What if it’s Jocelyne? Didn’t we teach her better than that?! And if it’s Clara we have to tell your parents. I mean, we shouldn’t freak out or anything. We have to be calm about it. But if they’re having sex, they need to be safe. I mean, you and I know that better than anyone. We learned that the hard way, didn’t we?”

07-12-16_11-03-48 PM

Tobi said nothing as Colette’s nervous rambling filled the air. He felt shocked. Numb, almost. And so sad. I tried to warn her. I tried so hard. What was it Clara had told him? “He’s not like that.”  He recalled. Had she been lying to him about having sex? Had she changed her mind? Or worse… Had this Julian guy done the unthinkable?

The thought made him sick to his stomach. If I’d told Mama and Papa, maybe this never would have happened. He realized, his nausea intensifying. Oh my God…

“It’s Clara.” Tobi spoke at last, stepping closer to her.

07-12-16_11-13-43 PM

Colette looked at him curiously. “How can you be so sure?”

He hesitated for just a moment. “Because she does have a boyfriend. She just never told anyone…” He closed his eyes, cursing himself. “God damn it, I should have known something like this would happen…”

“What?! What are you talking about?”

07-12-16_11-06-37 PM

Tobi took a deep breath, then told Colette in hushed tones everything he knew about Clara’s boyfriend.

Colette stared at him, wide-eyed, as he finished. “What the hell, Tobi?! You knew about this? And you didn’t tell anyone?!”

Her husband shook his head.

07-12-16_11-18-04 PM

“But why?! Why would you keep that a secret? Especially from your parents?!”

Because she blackmailed me into keeping my mouth shut. Tobi thought bitterly. How on Earth could he even begin to explain himself? “Look, I… I dunno, okay? I…” He sputtered awkwardly as he fought to find a good answer. “I just… I didn’t…”

What IS IT with you?!” Colette burst angrily. “It’s like you never give me a straight answer any more about ANYTHING! You’ve been staying out late doing God knows what with those ‘friends’ of yours from work, making up the shittiest excuses for everything… And now you’re keeping secrets from me too?! Secrets that could put your own Schwester in danger?! What else have you been hiding?!” Her mouth contorted into a scowl as she spoke.

07-12-16_11-21-26 PM

Tobi couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “What the hell?! Where is this coming from?!”

“You’ve changed. You’re not the man I married, Tobi. You haven’t been for a hell of a long time.”

Wow, she really wants to do this right now?! Okay…“Oh, and who are YOU to talk?!” Tobi shot back, the words spilling from his mouth before he even realized what he was saying. “What happened to the woman I married, huh? You’ve been so goddamn moody and distant for so fucking long… You let our sex life waste away into NOTHING… It’s like you don’t even give a shit about me anymore. So don’t you lecture ME about changing.”

07-12-16_11-27-46 PM

Excuse me?! You’re saying that I don’t give a shit about you?! How many YEARS have you been married to that fucking football team of yours? Your career’s important. I get it. But guess who else is important? Your WIFE! The one you treat like she’s invisible until she spreads her legs…”

07-12-16_11-47-27 PM

“YOU HEARD ME! You want sex, Tobi. I get that. So do I! But you don’t want ME.” She shrieked. “Do you know why I stopped it? Because you didn’t FEEL anything for me anymore! There was no passion, no feeling… Nothing!” Twin trails of tears were now creeping their way down her flushed cheeks. “I’m your WIFE, Tobi. I’m not a goddamn sex toy!” She spat. “Do you even love me anymore?!”

Her words were like slap across the face. “H-how can you say that?!” Tobi stammered. “Of course I love you!”

07-12-16_11-35-22 PM

“Then why don’t you start acting like it?!”

Tobi said nothing for a few moments. Colette was absolutely right. He knew she was. And though he knew that his wife was not entirely blameless, he also knew that his own behavior had been the catalyst for so many of their problems…

And that his fling with Anna had done nothing but make things worse.

07-12-16_11-37-59 PM

“Look, I’m sorry you feel this way, okay? But… why didn’t you tell me all this sooner?” He asked at last.

“I wanted to.” Colette sighed in exasperation. “But it’s not like this is easy to talk about!” She admitted. “And even if I wanted to, you’re never around anymore.” There was a sudden bitter edge to her voice as she spoke. “You’re always so busy with work, and then you’re always going out with the guys after practice…”

Tobi bit his lip, then took a very deep breath. “I wasn’t out with the guys.” He said softly.

07-12-16_11-41-43 PM

“I was going out with someone… But it wasn’t them.”

Colette said nothing.

07-12-16_11-41-25 PM

“I, um… She….” He paused. Why is this so damn hard? “Well…Her… Her name is Anna.”

Tobi had never seen his wife’s eyes go so wide in his entire life. “YOU’RE CHEATING ON ME?!”

07-12-16_11-30-59 PM

“NO! NO!” He put his hands up almost defensively. “I swear to God, I’m not! Please, just – just listen, okay?” Colette said nothing, so he went on. “All we ever did was hang out. Grab a few drinks. I NEVER had sex with her, Lettie. I just… liked having fun with her. I liked the attention she gave me.” He hung his head in shame for a moment. “But that was all. I promise.” Tobi’s voice was almost pleading.

Colette raised an eyebrow. It was clear she was still fuming. “That was all?”

“I… I kissed her.” He admitted, his voice very small. “M-made out with her, I guess? And I felt so horrible. I was so disgusted with myself.”

07-12-16_11-39-47 PM

“Good! You should be!” The young woman balled her hands into fists at her sides. “You bastard!”

“Colette, I’m sorry. I love you. I swear, that has never changed since the moment I met you. I was just… lost, I guess. But I never meant to hurt you. And I ended things with Anna before they went anywhere. I promise.” Tobi suddenly felt like he was going to cry. “It made me realize how much I miss you. And how much I want to fix this. Fix us.

To his surprise, Colette looked no happier than she had been a few moments before. “You think it’s that easy?! Jesus Christ, Tobi! You cheated on me!”

07-12-16_11-44-45 PM

“No! Didn’t you hear a word I said?! I never –”

“I know you didn’t have sex with her! I believe you. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t cheating!” She narrowed her eyes at her husband. “How many weeks had you been seeing this bitch behind my back, huh? Is she younger than me? Prettier? Were you trying to… to trade me in or something?!”

“Colette, listen to yourself! You know that’s not true! I just…” Tobi sighed. “I fucked up SO bad. I know I did. And I am more sorry than I have ever felt in my entire life.” This time, he could actually feel tears beginning to well up in his eyes. “I… I was just bored, okay? I mean… aren’t you?”

His wife said nothing. Neither of them did.

07-12-16_11-54-48 PM 07-12-16_11-55-47 PM

“Colette, please.” Tobi broke the silence at last. “I am so sorr—”

“I’m going to bed.” Colette cut him off abruptly. “We can deal with Clara in the morning, I guess.”

07-12-16_11-57-03 PM

“Goodnight, Tobi.”

  1. I am so relieved he told her though I am so incredibly proud of Tobi – and relieved they finally shared their ‘reasons’ for the divide in their relationship. I am so hopeful for them now – yet they have to deal with the whole Clara thing and god only knows how everyone will react to Tobi knowing this whole time Eeeps

    1. A point for #TeamOptimism! 😛 No but seriously, I know a few people thought it would be best if he didn’t tell Colette the truth, but the weight of that guilt would have destroyed him, and I think it would prevent them from ever having the chance of moving forward. So confessing was a big step!

But yeah, now that all their issues (including Tobi’s infidelity) are out on the table, we have to see whether they’re actually able to fix all of their problems, and if Colette is willing to forgive…

And yes, Clara! Another big issue in the family right now… Never a dull moment in the Rosebrook household…

    1. It could go either way right now… :-/ We’ll have to wait and see. I think a large part of it depends on how much the two of them TRULY still love each other and WANT to make it work. It’s hard to say at this point…

And yes, no more blackmail for Tobi, wooh! 😛

  2. Sitting in a beach bar, drinking a mojito and enjoying (but also hating) the drama in this chapter. Tobi did the right thing, finally. I still have hope for ToCo. Hopefully Colette just needs some time to realize that to make things work, she needs to change as well and that she wasn’t always a perfect wife (although Tobi took things to a much higher level of imperfection, of course).

    1. Please stop making me jealous 😛 Haha no, but seriously, thanks for still taking the time to read, even on vacation! 😀

I’m glad we have another member of #TeamOptimism. But we’ll see what happens. You’re right that they BOTH have to change. But can/will they? We’ll see!

    1. Hahahahaha well I look forward to hearing what you have to say, and I’m sorry this chapter has gotten you so worked up hahaha it was an intense one for sure! Have fun at your party 😀

  3. He totally did the right thing. Now all the cards are on the table. Tobi wants to fix it but Colette has to want to fix it too. It will be up to her. All he can do now is show her how bad he wants to rekindle their love and let her process what she just found out while at the same time take in what she told him. It could take awhile but he has to earn her trust and love back. She has to grieve, be angry, be hurt and then finally decide if she can forgive and along the way realize she wasn’t truthful either, not that it excuses what butt head did. But the fact that he told her goes a long way to making that happen. Counseling would be good. I am hopeful. I want Toco back. ❤️

Glad Clara isn’t pregnant, but a huge wake up call for her. She was upset even before she thought she might be pregnant. She got lucky now needs to dump the jerk. She likely won’t have a choice, not that she probably wants to stay with him anyway now.🙁

    1. I’m glad you have hope for ToCo! 🙂 They have a long road ahead of them if they truly want to fix things. We’ll see whether they’re willing to do what’s necessary to rekindle their marriage, and perhaps most importantly, if Colette can forgive!

And yes, no baby for Clara, thankfully! But something tells me this scare will have a big impact on her… We’ll see! 😛

    1. Hahahaha no baby! Did you really think I’d do teen pregnancy again? XD So cruel 😛 Poor Mari and Tobi already had to deal with it themselves!

And yes, Tobi was finally honest! Time apart definitely could help them. We’ll see where it goes from here.. Thanks for reading!

        1. Hahahahaha! I write and screenshot quite far in advance… I’m usually about 10 chapters ahead! For example, right now I am 9 ahead (daily updates until this coming Thursday, then back to 5 chapters a week, so I have chapters scheduled through August 3rd right now). I would never be able to keep up with this schedule if I didn’t stay far ahead 🙂

  4. I flippin LOVE this! This is my new favorite chapter lol. Well, not that I had a favorite before, but whatever! I loved how she put they’re differences aside to talk about something more important. That takes guts and courage. Let’s see if she still has those guts and courage to think things over and agree to work it out! (tune in next week!)

    1. I’m so glad you loved this chapter so much hahaha. I really enjoyed writing this (even though it was an intense conversation, it was such a long time coming haha) and I was pretty pleased with how the dialogue came out too 😀

This is a huge first step. But like you said, now the question is what happens now, and whether they continue working to fix their marriage… Either way, I think it’s a good thing that things are out in the open now! We’ll see where it goes from here.

    1. I’m very glad he told the truth too! 🙂 Even though things are really bad right now… It’s a step in the right direction. The question now is where they go from here!

And yes! Clara dodged a huge bullet this time hahaha. It would have been so horrible if she’d actually been pregnant. I never would have done that to her 😛

  5. Normally I’d be on team #donttell – but if there’s a chance he would change his attitude around her or the chance that he’s a famous footballer and it would come out someday – far better to learn here and now than learn later and destroy the rebuilt trust. So in his case, he did the right thing, although the timing sucked.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah, it was a very heat-of-the-moment confession hahaha. But I’ve always been #teamtell. I think wallowing in guilt and keeping the secret would have done Tobi no good. He needed to get it out there. And he did… in a less-than-ideal scenario 😛

  6. I’m actually feeling cautiously optimistic about this. It was kind of like when you’ve got this horrible heavy air in the summer, and the scorching heat is sucking energy out of everyone, and the air pressure is being all funky… and then a huge storm needs to come to clear it all up and start fresh again. Let’s hope that’s where they’re going.

But even if they don’t rekindle their marriage, at least they now both see all the facts and know where they stand. It’s always better to make an informed decision than live with what-ifs and doubt yourself all the time.

    1. That’s a great metaphor! See, I told you you’re insightful 😛

And yes, no matter how things end up at this point, at least everything out in the open now. They communicated! 😮 It was angry and there was lots of yelling, sure… But two Rosebrooks actually discussed how they were feeling! Mark this day on your calendars, folks hahahaha

  7. It was about time they had this talk. I’m with Colette on this one. You don’t have to have sex for it to be cheating and Tobi totally DID cheat on her! I wouldn’t have been surprised if she had slapped him sims 3 style. And honestly Ithink he deserves it after what he did to her.

    Liked by 1 person

  8. Colette is right to be furious. It doesn’t matter what they did, it was still cheating. And THANK GOD it was a negative test. Hopefully this shocks Clara into doing something with the situation she’s in. I’m still holding out on ToCo though, I think they could make it if all the cards fall into place.

    1. Yes, thank goodness for Clara! I have a feeling this scare will have an impact on her… we’ll see though!

And we’ll see what happens with ToCo too…

  9. Well, that’s good news for Clara. Hopefully the scare of pregnancy will open her mind to her ‘relationship’ as it is. One can only hope :/ *fingers crossed* I don’t see her being happy that everyone is going to find out, but it’s truly for the best 🙂

I’m just super happy that Tobi finally came clean about knowing Clara had a relationship and his own with Anna. He certainly deserved the lashing he got from Lettie. I’m just very glad to know how bad he feels and that leads me to hope that everything will work out in the end 🙂

It’s really good that they FINALLY talked, even if there was some yelling, it certainly opened his eyes even more. I can’t blame her at all for stopping being intimate with him when she just felt no passion and therefore felt used. That’s completely understandable. If only she had mentioned her concerns to him sooner, but I hardly expect that with this legacy XD

I also believe she was suspicious of his activities as of late and suspected what he mentioned 🙂 Poor Lettie 😦 Don’t worry, I know that you both truly love and care for each other. I think that dealing with Clara’s predicament first is a top priority, and then maybe you can both start to heal.

Gaining back her trust is going to be tough Tobi, but if you really want to have the loving relationship I know you both can have, give it time, love and patience. It will be worth it ❤

They'll need time apart to think, especially Lettie. Does she want to still be with him? (I believe so, but time will tell). I can see both sides of the story and I feel so much for them both. I shall give them all a big hug, they need it 🙂 #TeamOptimism

I can't wait to see what happens next. I'm so excited 😀

    1. Hopefully you’re right about Clara, but we will see soon what happens from here…

And you said some very wise words about Tobi and Colette! Once things are sorted out with Clara, we can hope that they will take the next step in trying to fix things… But we’ll see. It could kind of go either way at this point.

  10. And…exploded! I know that it would happen…but didn’t expect that would be that way…it’s good for clara that she is not pregnat, so that she can have more control with herself and taking in consideration wath orders think…Now the relation is going to get cold, and they should really talk to Clara’s parents about that, even noing they aren’t ”protagoinsts” enymore…now, for the tecnic part, I myself play with a soccer palyer, and they expend really a lot of time in the work…

  11. I’m so glad Tobi was honest!! I think it was important he tell her everything, it’s the only way things between them can be fixed up. But she should have spoken up about her feelings a lot earlier. He didn’t know she felt that way, she gives him the cold shoulder because all she thinks she means to him is just having sex in bed. And he should have given her more attention, This is where a couple holds onto their resentments until it explodes! Of course I LOVE the drama and this chapter was great!! I’m not too judging on Tobi at present, least he was man enough to stop the relationship with the other younger woman and didn’t have sex with her, most men in his position probably would have!
Clara can’t blackmail him anymore either! So he’s now free to tell his mom about it. Can’t wait to see what happens!!! Unfortunately due to horrible internet issues I’ve been having at home, I’m unable to see all of your lovely snap shots, which really makes me sad as they are always so awesome.

    1. I’m glad he was honest too! 🙂 There’s still a long way for Tobi and Colette to go if they truly want to fix things, but this was such an important step! And you’re right… Colette should have spoken up sooner!

I’m sorry your internet isn’t working well 😦 are you able to see any of the pictures? I’d hate for you to miss things! I had a wordless section at the end of this chapter too. 😦 I hope your internet issues get fixed soon and thank you for reading! ^_^

      1. I managed to see a couple, but not all of them. Some days I’m lucky if I can only see a few. It’s been really annoying!! Our internet issues are continuing to get worse due to lots of housing development around us. It’s too hard to explain here, but I don’t know how or when it’ll get better. During the week I teach out country and I can often get decent internet service out there, providing I’m not too busy and I have time 🙂
I just love your chapters, but I don’t always get to review them as much as I would like. I’m still always reading though!

  12. Colette really is an awesome woman. Still worrying about her unfaithful husband’s sister. She is a true family woman and I admire her.
Of course team #ToCo goes for best because Toby is our past heir, but if Colette was it i would have hoped for a divorce.
Trust is like a porcelain vase my grandma said, once it breaks you can glue things back but it will never be as before,
I am married and if my husband ever cheated on me I think I will flip out so badly that I’d need to pack and go to not beat him up lol

    And yay for Clara!
The test is negative and that is super cool. I know that what happened won’t disappear but at least she still has her life, I am hoping to see her blogging again soon and maybe start something with (that guy who took piano classes with mari and now plays in Lucas band.
I know he is older than her but I feel he would be a gentleman 🙂

    1. Colette is a very strong woman, and has the family-oriented trait, so that helps a lot! 🙂 That’s a really insightful metaphor about trust being like a vase!

We’ll see what happens with Clara soon. Hopefully they will get better from here!

  13. Yes, Colette is handling this better than I think even I would in this situation hahahaha. But finding out from him was definitely better than the alternative!

I think she needs time to process this before they can move forward.

  14. I think it’s good that she heard it from him first. That might not be enough, but she heard it from him and he doesn’t deny that it was wrong and of course she is hurt, but it would have been worse if she had found out any other way.

  16. Okay I laughed a little at “The Truth is out There” Hehehehehe. 😛 Yes, this was a big step. But there is still a long way to go toward fixing things!

  17. I thought I should mention to you that a few days ago, you binge reading way back when Tobi and Colette first met at camp, and then that first night they spent together made me go back and re-read those chapters and I got so emotional that I almost cried when I saw the sweet and innocent beginnings of their love and how messed up things are for them now hahaha. Obviously I couldn’t tell you at the time, but now I can 😛

    1. I took the family photo using some poses and then having another sim take the photo 🙂 As for the house, my friend Joie made the Rosebrook house for me (and she does all of the ‘makeovers’ to the house too!) and when she’s done she puts it on the gallery for me to download. I’m not sure if she keeps it up or not when she does. If it’s up there, I think it’s just called Rosebrook house or something like that? ^_^

  18. What a rollercoaster, but at least hopefully they can heal? I dunno, I’m just glad he told her before Anna did something stupid. She may still do something stupid, but who knows.

  19. Whaaat, at first no comment at all and now two in a row?
But Tobi, I’m SO proud of you. Really. To be so honest – hopefully, Colette will come to appreciate it. I think so because she seemed to be disappointed (with good reason), but not completely enraged. Well done, though it still feels terrible for you.

    1. Yeah, she handled it pretty well, all things considered! 🙂 And Tobi learned to communicate! 😮 A miracle! Haha

  20. Love this freaking legacy. Like it’s dramatic, but heartwarming. Sad, but warm and fuzzy. It’s well-paced, well-written, has strong voices, and just overall my favorite piece of sim lit that I always want to come back to. (If I could just ever get caught up for once.)

  21. I love your god damn eye for detail, like when pictures of relevant characters are on the wall when they’re being spoken about in a conversation. I just love it, also I’m proud of Tobi and Colette for having that conversation but I do have one tid bit of advice my mother and grandmother taught me, NEVER SLEEP ON AN ARGUMENT WITH YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER DAMN IT 😛 😀

    1. Aww thank you!!! And thanks for reading my story! I’m so happy you’re taking the time to check it out ❤

And that’s some pretty great advice! Maybe ToCo should have taken it… 😮
