Prelude: Tradition

06-15-16_9-25-41 PM

The tiny black letters on the page in front of her blurred and blended together as Jocelyne tried to blink back the tears in her eyes.

She’d retreated to her room as quickly as she could after the burial service, desperate for some sort of escape from all the sadness around her. For Jocelyne, escape usually came in two forms – running or reading. The first option didn’t seem likely in her dress and heels, so instead she’d fled to the safety of the familiar dog-eared pages she now held in her lap.

Jocelyne just wished she’d picked any book but this one.

06-15-16_9-29-17 PM

He nodded. “She’s gone, Mel.” Lucas’ voice shook as he spoke and his tears finally began streaming down his cheeks. “I never got to tell her I’m sorry, or say goodbye…” Or keep my promise…

“Jocelyne?” A tiny voice called from the doorway.

06-15-16_9-31-54 PM

The girl glanced up from her great-grandfather’s book, wiping a few tears away with the back of her hand. “Hey, Gus.” She smiled gently at her little brother.

“I told you she’d be in here.” The little boy called over his shoulder.

Jocelyne heard her uncle’s booming laugh even before he stepped over the threshold. “So you did.” Stefan smiled at his nephew. “How’d you get so smart, Auggy?”

06-15-16_9-35-25 PM

Gus shrugged. “Maman?” He guessed.

Stefan ruffled the boy’s blonde hair, chuckling softly. “I’ll meet you back downstairs in a few minutes, okay?”

With a tiny nod, Gus retreated back into the hallway and down the stairs to rejoin his family below.

“Hi, Onkel Stefan.” Jocelyne smiled sadly as her uncle sat beside her on the tiny blue sofa. “Before you ask, I’m fine.” She promised him. “I just… needed to get away.”

06-15-16_9-36-58 PM

“I know.” He replied warmly. “And I wasn’t gonna ask, don’t worry.” Stefan gave her a small smile. “What are you reading?”

“Great-grandpa’s book.” Jocelyne rose to her feet and crossed to the bookshelf, returning the thick tome back to where she’d found it. “I thought reading it again it might be a nice way to remember him, know what I mean? That old story meant so much to him.” She crossed back to rejoin her uncle. “But it was a lot harder than I thought it’d be.”

06-15-16_9-38-24 PM

Stefan nodded, his face solemn. “It’s gonna be rough for a while.” He said softly. “For all of us. I wish I didn’t have to go back home so soon…”

“I’m just glad you made it here in time to say goodbye.” Jocelyne’s voice shook slightly as she recalled the horrible scene at the hospital just a few nights before. “Omi says she thinks he was holding on until you got there.”

06-15-16_9-39-58 PM

The corner of Stefan’s lip curled into a tiny smile. “Y-yeah. She told me.” His voice was thick as he spoke. “Mama’s always believed in stuff like that… And who knows? Maybe she’s right.”

We’ll never know. Jocelyne felt her eyes begin to well up with tears once more. Because we can’t ask him. He’s gone.

06-15-16_9-42-44 PM

Neither one of them spoke for a few moments. It was Stefan who finally broke the silence, clearing his throat softly before he spoke. “I know you want to be alone right now, so I’ll make this quick.” He promised her. “I just wanted the chance to talk to you alone… There’s something I want to give you. And I really think my grandfather would want you to have this too.”

Jocelyne raised an eyebrow curiously as her uncle reached beside him, retrieving a small object from between the cushions. Had he been carrying something when he’d walked in? Jocelyne could not remember.

“Here. For you.”

06-15-16_9-44-08 PM

“A notebook?” She asked uncertainly.

“A journal. Just like the ones your Papa and I have.” He explained.

“And Oma.” Jocelyne’s voice was small. “And great-grandpa too.”

Stefan nodded. “And now, I think it’s your turn.”

Jocelyne bit her lip as she looked down at the beautiful blue journal. It all felt like so much pressure.

“Why me?” Her first instinct was to suggest he give it to his own child, but Jocelyne knew her cousin was much too young to start keeping a journal. And Auggy probably is too… “What about Luc?” She asked.

06-15-16_9-48-32 PM

To her surprise, her uncle laughed. “Jocelyne… Be honest. Would your Bruder ever voluntarily write anything?”

She couldn’t help but smile. “Not unless it’s quarter notes.” Jocelyne admitted. Lucas was always so wrapped up with his silly band that he had no time for anything else, it seemed. Especially not writing. Words had always been her forte, not his… Though she was used to reading words, or speaking them. But writing?

“I’m just not sure if I’m a writer, Onkel Stefan.” She continued, shrugging slightly.

“Anyone can be a writer.” He assured her. “I mean, look at your Tante with her blog!”

06-15-16_9-49-58 PM

Jocelyne couldn’t help but scoff. “You mean that weird site where Clara posts all her ranting and teenage angst?” She giggled. “Yeah… not the same thing.”

Stefan shrugged, a soft sigh escaping his lips. “You don’t have to write if you don’t want to.” He said seriously. “I just thought now would be as good a time as any to get the tradition going again. Your Papa laughed when I told him, of course. You know your Vater.” His lip curled into a smile. “He’s never really been one for tradition… And you don’t have to be either.” He assured her. “I just wanted you to have it. Just in case.”

Jocelyne paused for a moment, thoughtful. “Thanks, Onkel Stefan.” She said at last, rising to her feet and pulling him into a warm hug.

06-15-16_9-51-07 PM

“Make sure you keep that thing hidden.” He smiled as he pulled away from her. “Clara will flip if she finds out I didn’t bring something for her too.” Stefan gave her a small wink.

“The secret’s safe with me.”  She laughed.

06-15-16_9-54-17 PM

“I’d better head back downstairs…” Stefan paused for a moment. “Want me to tell them you’re not feeling well?” He offered. “You know Auggy’s gonna tell everyone you’re hiding away up here…”

Jocelyne shook her head. “It’s fine. I’ll probably head back down in a few minutes anyway. I just needed a little break… It’s so hard to see everyone so miserable.”

“Believe me,” her uncle sighed, “I know. Take your time.”

Jocelyne smiled. “Thanks.”

06-15-16_9-55-54 PM06-15-16_9-56-56 PM 06-15-16_9-58-05 PM 06-15-16_9-58-48 PM 06-15-16_9-59-29 PM 06-15-16_9-59-44 PM 06-15-16_10-00-53 PM

Tradition… Jocelyne turned the word over in her mind a few times. She’d never really given it much thought before. Like her uncle had said, it was never something her father had put much stock into. And, now that she thought of it, neither had her mother, really.

That was always great-grandpa’s thing. She realized. And Onkel Stefan’s too, I guess.

But what about her? Jocelyne wondered. Could it be her thing too?

I guess it couldn’t hurt to try…

Welcome to Generation 4! And… Goodbye Alex 😥 I wanted to write some kind of sappy goodbye for him here, but I’m not really sure what else to say except that I love him so much and I will miss him and I cried when he died 😦

I like to think he’s with Lucas and Mel and Krystina right now eating popcorn and sitting back to watch what sort of misery the descendants of the family go through next 😛

    1. Thank you 🙂 Jocelyne is quite the beauty! Losing Alex was hard, but you’re right! At least he got to see a lot (the good, the bad, AND the ugly haha) before he passed away. ❤ Thank you for reading 😀

  1. Oh this is super bittersweet! I’m so sad to see Alex leave, but happy to see Gus, Jocelyne and Stefan older! Everyone looks amazing. Stefan is so dapper, and Jocelyne looks as sweet as his mother. And Gus! What a handsome little boy. ❤

    1. Thank you exo! There were a lot of mixed emotions here (goodbye Alex 😦 ) but I did love showing those characters older! I’m glad you enjoyed seeing them ^_^

  2. So many mixed emotions. Jocelyne is STUNNING, and this prologue was so sad and so heartwarming at the same time. I love Jocelyne and Stefan’s relationship, and Stefan seems to be doing better (um, a child? Hello!). I also love the journal-tradition in this legacy, so unique. But I’m super sad to see Alex go 😦 He will be missed.

Also, just a gut feeling, but I think Clara is gonna be a handful :p

    1. Thank you so much! Stefan is in a great place (and yes, a child! 😀 ) but has managed to stay close with his family ^_^ I will miss Alex too though 😦 It was hard to see him go. Thanks so much for reading!

  3. Alex will be missed. I knew this would be coming but it’s still sad. Now to more positive things: Stefan looks absolutely amazing. I almost couldn’t belive it. And Jocelyne, I can see Mari, Toby, Stefan and Colette in her face. She looks so much like all of them

    1. Thank you so much! I’m very proud of Stefan 😀 And Jocelyne definitely got a good mix of genes ^_^ Thank you!

  4. Wow, Jocelyne is so pretty!! I really love her! 🙂 Hope she’ll enjoy writing in a journal just like her uncle and great grandpa. Farewell, Alex. You’ll be missed. 😦 Stefan’s transformation from YA to Adult looks great!

I just realized something: the active trait has been present in every generation Alex (Gen 1), Josh (Gen 2), Tobi (Gen 3), and Jocelyne (Gen 4) have it. Could this be the traditional trait that will be passed on from generation to generation?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I never even really noticed/thought of that before! But you’re right! Haha that will be interesting to see if it continues being passed on! With the trait roller, you never know! 😛

  5. *dances and chants* Gen 4 is here, Gen four is here…

And then I realise that Alex dies…

And then I start to sniff.

Jocelyne has such a wonderful voice! I can’t wait to get to know her.

And did I pick up on that right? Stefan has a child? Does that mean he has a wife too?

    Also…

    We’re blue! It’s blue! *dances*

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahahaa even the blue gets a celebration! 😉 Thank you Spottydog! I’m gonna miss Alex a lot, but I am definitely loving Jocelyne 🙂

And yes, Stefan has a child! As for the wife part, who knows? 😛 Hahaha we’ll get more little tidbits about Stefan in his future appearances, don’t worry! 😉

  6. I had to re-read the whole thing to find the part where everyone is freaking out about Stefan having a child. LOL Although it starts on a sad note, I’m happy the next gen has started!

  7. This was an excellent goodbye to Alex and a great beginning to gen 4! I loved that you brought back Stefan for this. How many years has it been since he left Windenburg? And does he have a kid now?! Is he married??
Jocelyn is a wonderful character. Generation 4 is gonna be amazing because if her ×D

    1. Thank you so much! 🙂 It’s been 9 years since Stefan left, but he’s stayed close with his family during those years (yay!). I did mention kinda sneakily in this chapter that he has a kid 😛 Haven’t confirmed if he’s married yet 😉 We’ll get a few more tidbits about Stefan as time goes on, but I’m trying to save most of his story for Joie to tell in her legacy when he appears there ^_^

And I’m so glad you like Jocelyne! She is very fun to write. 😀

      1. I’m really gonna miss Alex but I’m sure Jocelyne is up for the task of being heiress of gen 4 🙂 and Stefan looks so mature and sure of himself! I literally didn’t recognize him at first!

  8. I echo everyone’s comments. Loved the transformation of Stefan – appears he finally has his shit together, will miss Alex, Jocelyne is gorgeous and can’t wait to get into her head, hints about Clara being a hot mess and Lucas’s obsession with music. Excellent intro to Gen 4….The part I missed was Stefan telling her to only write the truth….I really was hoping to see that. Maybe there will be an opportunity later for Stefan to tell her when she is struggling with some secret down the road…Haha….I see this making them close for some reason even though he lives far away. 🙂

    1. Thank you Audrey! 😀 You’re right, it would have been nice for Stefan to echo the advice Mari gave him and Tobi all those years ago! Maybe there will be a chance in the future, who knows? 🙂

And Stefan and Jocelyne are definitely super close 😀 They are the two most introverted/thoughtful/quiet members of the family so they really click well. That’s kind of why he gave her the journal — he could see that she has the right mindset for keeping a diary and carrying on the tradition. I’m sure this will bring them even closer though! 🙂

  9. Poor family. RIP Alex. Hope Jade is alright, and happy to see the hints of the others’ characterisations (I wanna see Clara and her teenage angst). And damn, that is a distinguished Stefan.

    1. Hahaha we will see Clara’s angst soon! 😛 And thanks 🙂 but I can’t take much credit there… I let JoieWilder pick Stefan’s new hair and clothes and she did a great job with him!

    1. Hahahahaha well I need to save some things for Joie to write about when he shows up in her legacy! 😛 So no age or name or gender. But knowledge that he has a kid XD

  10. Ooo will we ever see Stephans child?? Jocelyn is gorgeous wondering how I would pronounce her name phonetically as I am sure it isnt the american way of saying it! I love that it was Stephan that gave her the journal ❤ so awesome!! Can't wait to meet Clara – sorry I am gushing and will stop now 🙂

RIP Alex you will live on in my heart forever <3<3<3

    1. I love your comment Lee, thank you! ^_^ We won’t get to see Stefan’s child because his story is going to be continuing in JoieWilder’s legacy and I don’t want to spoil all the details for our mutual readers! But he’s happy 🙂

Jocelyne’s name is pronounced the French way– “Joss-leen” 🙂 And I’m excited for you to meet Clara too! She’s awesome 😀 And RIP my lovely Alex ❤

      Thank you Lee!

    1. Hahaha you can thank Joie for that. Since he’s gonna be in her story I let her give him his time-jump makeover. 🙂

Yayay! Auggy was in this chapter!! I have a feeling Auggy will be my favourite character, idk why, he’s just adorable!!
Even if he hasn’t spoken much for now I’m already in #teamAuggyalltheway!!! 😀

    1. Hahha oh no! I’d never do that to you! Or Jonas haha. And I’m glad you like Auggy so much! ^_^ He is a background character in the first part of this generation but he will have a more significant role once he’s a teen! ^_^

      1. Oh phew! And I’m so excited to get to know Auggy more! I was just wondering if this family and their house is up on the gallery? If not, I would love to play with them but if you rather keep them private I totally understand as sometimes I rather keep my families personal and not share them. 😀

        1. I don’t have a current/Gen 4 version of the Rosebrooks on the gallery but I do have a Gen 3 one with Stefan in it 🙂 I don’t mind if you download them! I would just want warning if you decided to throw them in a story or something haha (btw I don’t think the gen 3 version of the family has Auggy in it 😮 I might have to put a gen 4 version up soon haha)

JoieWilder made their house for me and it does have some cc walls in it, so it might not work in your game.

  12. Oh, I really love Stefan’s new look and hair do!! I wasn’t expecting him to make a reappearance so soon and it was a lovely introduction chapter into the next generation. I can’t wait to see the other teens and her brother, who is so into his music. I’m looking forward to reading all the teenage angst that’ll soon be happening! Jocelyn is absolutely stunning! And Auggy is so cute. Sad to see Alex go, but he had a long fulfilling life in the end.
I look so forward to reading your chapters!!

    1. Thank you so much!! ^_^ JoieWilder gets all the credit for Stefan’s mini-makeover. I agree that he looks great 🙂 And yeah, it was kinda funny to have this big goodbye and then have him show up in the next chapter XD But this time we really won’t be seeing him again for a while 😦

I’m very excited for everyone to “meet” the rest of my Gen 3 characters 😀 Thanks so much for reading ^_^

  14. I love that Stefan calls him Auggy! Jocelyne is a great combo of her parents and grandparents. Alex will be missed, but I’m so excited for Generation 4.

And Stefan has a wife & child?! Lucas states a band?! Less surprising is that Clara has a ranty blog and Tobi is known in the family as being not about tradition.

I can’t wait to hear more about what happened in the time jump.

  15. OMG Jocelyn is so pretty 😍😍😍 I love her… she seems so sweet and soft-spoken! And I see a lot of Tobi in her!
I can’t wait to read what she’s going to write in her diary!

And wow Stefan has a child?!?!! 😱 I hope we get to see his family and know how he met his wife or wait.. maybe he did not marry and adopted a baby indstead or got abducted by aliens and gave birth to an alien baby! Oooh the possibilitied are endless!

    1. Haha thank you Remi! Jocelyne did turn out so lovely! And yes, Stefan has a family! ^_^ Unfortunately I don’t get to tell you much more than that — we will see details of Stefan’s future in JoieWilder’s Thoreau Legacy. If you don’t read her story, you should at least read about Stefan once he appears so you can find out what happens to him! 😉 I am being really careful about what I reveal since Joie and I have a lot of mutual readers 🙂

  16. Oh look at Stephan, he’s come so far – he seems to have it so together now. The new look doesn’t hurt either, I suppose haha!

So, are we now venturing into a territory where the current generation no longer knows D2D was based on a true story? It’s interesting to watch that story live on through the legacy in any case!

    1. I am so proud of Stefan. I feel like a proud mama! Hahaha

We are entering a bit of a gray area in regards to D2D… Tobi and Stefan are the last ones who 100% believe. With Joce, there is a healthy dose of skepticism there. She’s not really sure if Alex was grossly exaggerating, or if it’s possible ghosts are real haha

  17. Hahaha good eye, it is Ev’s dress! Too beautiful not to use again 🙂

And yes, I miss Alex too 😦 But I’m happy the tradition lives on, and it felt right to have Stefan pass on the tradition, even though Tobi is her father. 🙂

  18. Jocelyn is beautiful, I’m already so happy to have her as the heir. She seems really nice and sweet and therefore I am very scared for her.

And yay, Stefan! Love his hair. Can’t wait to hear what he’s been up to.

And wow, rip Alex 😢 I only just finished his generation earlier today. And he was Lucas’s grandson. I absolutely love how you use Lucas’ family for this story – did they come first or the idea for the story?

    1. Lol be afraid, be very afraid… And I’m so glad you liked that glimpse of Stefan! I mentioned in reply to your comment on the chapter before this one about his absence from my story 😦 So we won’t know much of what he was up to. And I am very sorry for that!

Glad you’re excited for Joce though!!!! And Lucas/D2D all came first for sure 🙂 Then when I decided to do a legacy I knew I’d want to continue following Lucas’ bloodline instead of starting with new sims! 🙂

  19. I’m catching up quickly I like to think. This was my favorite gen, though it’s definitely a long one. I’ll slowly poke away at this so I can get back to where I was in Gen 5 with a fresh mind of everything that’s happened. Joce is like the love of my life so.
