Interlude: Like It or Not

Mari couldn’t tell who was more nervous – her or her son.

03-28-16_10-12-14 PM

Tobi paced back and forth in the entryway of their rental home, glancing at his phone every few minutes to check the time – or maybe for a message from Colette.

03-28-16_10-11-57 PM

Mari wasn’t sure.

She was too busy fighting off wave after wave of nausea that flowed through her stomach – And she had a feeling it had nothing to do with morning sickness. Mari took a few deep breaths, wondering what her therapist would think if he could see just how close she was to losing it.

As soon as this whole mess began, she had gone back to seeing Dr. Durand twice a month. And even he had a hard time hiding his shock when she first explained the whole situation to him. That’s when she really knew just how bad it was.

And though he’d been trying his best to help her talk through things… Seeing him again had not been helping nearly as much as Mari thought it would. And she had a feeling it wasn’t him that was the problem…

“Are you okay, Mama?” Stefan’s voice was uncertain.

03-28-16_10-13-22 PM

Mari nodded weakly. “Y-yeah, I’m fine, honey.” She tried to smile. “Your little sister’s just acting up a bit, that’s all.”

She could tell in an instant that her son didn’t believe her, but he said nothing more – something for which she was very grateful.

She still hadn’t told her sons the truth – either one of them. Not the whole truth, anyway.

At Jonas’ urging, she’d shared with her sons the bare minimum – that she had known Colette’s father long ago, and had not seen him for many years.

“So things might get a little… uncomfortable.” She’d explained. “But… Just don’t worry about it, okay?”

03-28-16_9-59-29 PM

Tobias had pressed her for more, of course. But Mari deflected all of his questions as best as she could, until he finally dropped it.

She watched him now as he continued to pace back and forth across the old hardwood floor, and could almost picture her father upstairs, doing the very same – Tobias and Alex were alike in more ways than just appearance. They both shared the nervous habit of pacing when they were stressed, or worried. And when Mari had told her father that a ghost from her family’s past would be showing up at their doorstep, well…

Thankfully he and Jade had opted to stay out of sight for this particular meeting. And Mari couldn’t help but feel relieved. Things would be awkward enough already…

Ding!

03-28-16_10-15-07 PM

The entire family nearly jumped at the sound of the doorbell echoing throughout the musty old house. They’re here. Mari thought, panicked. He’s here…

Tobias rushed forward in a flash and pulled open the heavy wooden door.

She had only a few seconds to take in the sight of the slender young woman who stood in the entryway before Tobias pulled her eagerly into his arms. Mari could hear the young girl begin weeping softly into his shoulder as she clung to him.

03-28-16_10-21-17 PM

“It’s gonna be okay.” Tobias’ voice shook slightly, and Mari watched as he gently stroked the girl’s light brown hair. “We can do this.”

03-28-16_10-23-35 PM

Despite everything, Mari felt a warmth in her heart at the sight. He really loves her… She realized.

A few moments later, the girl’s parents finally came into view as they stepped nervously through the front door.

Oh my God.

03-28-16_10-26-40 PM

Mari felt like she was going to faint. Or vomit. Maybe both.

For a moment, Diego turned his head, and let his eyes meet hers. Pain. Guilt. Shame. Sorrow. Each emotion flickered there in his gaze for the briefest moment…

03-28-16_10-25-30 PM

Then he stared back at the floor. And so did she.

“C-Colette…” Tobias’ voice brought his mother back to the present. “This is my Mama… and my Papa.” He gestured nervously toward the pair of them.

03-28-16_10-31-37 PM

Mari tried very hard to force a smile. Her husband was much more successful.

“It’s… Um… Really nice to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Klein.” The girl’s voice was barely above a whisper. “Thank you for letting me stay with you. And, uh… c-congratulations, Mrs. Klein.” Colette glanced down at Mari’s stomach as she spoke.

03-28-16_10-34-55 PM

Thanks, you, too. The response was so automatic that Mari nearly had to bite her tongue to choke back the words. She could not help but let her gaze flick down toward the teen’s tiny baby bump as well. The sight of it made her heart sink. Oh God, Tobi… WHY?

“You can call me Mari.” She spoke at last after hesitating just a moment too long.

Beside her, Jonas nodded. “And ‘Jonas’ is fine.” He assured Colette warmly. “We’re, uh… practically family now after all, right?” He let out a small, somewhat uncomfortable chuckle.

Colette’s cheeks reddened as she nodded slightly, then turned to face Tobias. “And, um… Tobi… These are my parents.” She gestured uncertainly toward her mother and father.

03-28-16_10-37-35 PM

“Hi.” Tobias managed to choke out.

Colette’s mother narrowed her eyes at him, and said nothing.

03-28-16_10-38-23 PM

Mari could not help the wave of anger that flowed through her at the sight. She thinks this is HIS fault… She realized, horrified. Newsflash, bitch – your daughter is just as much to blame here!

Something in her expression must have given her away, because Mari suddenly felt one of Jonas’ warm hands reach for hers, squeezing slightly. Her anger began to cool slightly at his touch. Deep breaths, Mari. You can do this.

“I’m glad we could finally meet you.” Diego spoke at last, and the sound of his voice brought another flurry of unpleasant memories to the forefront of Mari’s mind. “I just… wish the circumstances were a bit different.” He added sadly.

03-28-16_10-42-43 PM

“And you must be Stefan.” The man smiled gently at Mari’s other son.

Stefan simply nodded.

Then, to Mari’s surprise, he extended a hand toward Jonas in greeting. “It’s… Jonas, right?” Diego continued, shaking his hand firmly. “We spoke on the phone.”

She saw Jonas’ eyes widen slightly in surprise, but he kept his voice casual. “That’s me.” He smiled. “Nice to meet you.”

“You too.” Diego hesitated, then glanced nervously at Mari once more. “And… It’s… It’s really great to see you again, Mari.” He said softly. “You look –”

Don’t.” She didn’t even bother looking at him this time. “Just don’t.”

03-28-16_10-50-58 PM

No one said anything for a few moments. Colette’s mother resumed her icy silence and stony stares while the rest of them all seemed to have chosen a different spot on the floor to examine.

“Hey, uh… Let me help you bring your stuff upstairs, okay?” Tobias finally broke the silence.

03-28-16_10-52-20 PM

Without waiting for a response he leaned downward to lift Colette’s backpack of clothing from the floor, then took her hand and whisked her away toward the stairs.

“And, um… I’ll… help.” Stefan said quickly as he scurried away to follow them.

03-28-16_10-54-40 PM

Oh my God, someone please kill me now. Mari thought as she stood in the unbearable silence. It was like one of her worst nightmares had finally come true – stuck in a room with the two people she’d spent nearly half her life hating.

“Well.” Amelie spoke at last, her accent heavy and her tone curt and cold. “I suppose I should drop off my things at the hotel.”

“We’re having dinner around 6:30.” Jonas said kindly. “You’re more than welcome to come back and join us.”

03-28-16_10-55-26 PM

“Oh, I’ll most definitely be back.” Amelie assured him, nodding. “We have quite a bit to discuss.” There was an almost threatening edge to her voice as she spoke. “And I’m not so certain I feel comfortable having your son alone up there with my daughter.” The woman’s narrowed eyes glanced toward the stairs.

03-28-16_10-56-05 PM

This time, Mari’s attempts to control herself were not quite as successful. “What the Hell is that supposed to mean?!” She demanded.

Amelie’s lip curled slightly. “Well, we all know what happened the last time he was alone with her. Who knows what he’ll do now.”

“WHAT?!”

03-28-16_10-56-56 PM

Diego stepped between the two women immediately. “Hey, hey, hey!” He cried out, his voice pleading.

As Jonas calmed her, Mari watched Diego turn to Amelie, glaring daggers at her and muttering something in French. The woman rolled her eyes and made a sharp reply in her native tongue, then turned and headed out the door without another word.

03-28-16_10-57-58 PM

Diego held his face in one of his hands for a moment before speaking. “I’m sorry.” He said softly. “Amelie can be really… Well, sometimes she…” Diego shook his head, laughing somewhat awkwardly. “Let’s just say there’s a reason we never got married.”

Mari said nothing.

Jonas tried to smile. “Things are really… tense right now. We get it.” He said gently. “And… if you’d like to join us for dinner tonight, you’re welcome too.”

03-28-16_10-59-15 PM

“Thanks.” Diego replied uncertainly. “We’ll see. I’m staying with my parents for the weekend, so I’ll see what their plans are… If not, tomorrow for sure. We… We really do have a lot to talk about…”

03-28-16_11-00-50 PM

Jonas simply sighed. “I know.”

“I… uh… guess I’ll see you later, then…” Diego headed nervously for the door. He still had not glanced at Mari even once since that first time. “And… Thank you for welcoming my daughter into your home.” His tone was suddenly quite stiff and formal.

Then with a quick nod of farewell, he was gone.

03-28-16_11-01-43 PM

“Fuck.” Mari let out a long, slow breath. How long had she been holding it? “I don’t know if I can do that again.” She said wearily.

03-28-16_11-05-45 PM

Jonas’ face fell. “I hate to say this, babe…” He said gently. “But in less than six months… We’re all gonna be family.” He sighed. “Whether we like it or not.”

    1. It’s okay. No one will like Amelie… XD And I dunno, I dont’ think he looks so bad 😛 But he’s certainly quite stressed right now…. Hahaha 😛 “Interesting” for sure 😉 Thank you so much for reading!

    1. Hahaha yes, I had to end with that happy picture of Tobi and Colette to remind people that SOMEONE is happy about this whole thing, at least 😛 And yeah… Amelie is a bitch. XD

    1. Both Mari and Colette’s babies are adorable! (And they’re actually children in my game already 😮 Time jump coming 😉 And they are SO CUTE!!!) But yeah, right now there is drama all over the place in this poor family XD

  1. Woah! That was so intense!

Amelie is quite an angry woman and I get it when Diego said there were a reson they never got married. It can’t have been easy to live with her. What a snide comment she gave! She’s so rude! Despite that, i actually think she’s quite a beautiful sim. She has good facial festures.

Diego was such a gentle man. That was nice to see that he could behave himself. And I’m very glad to see he also found it uncomfortable. I really hope a confrontation will be between him and Mari at some point. Hopefully it will be without the kids in the room. God whst DRAMA it would be if they were all in the room while she confronts him ! Hehehe.

I think Mari did very well. I understand her comment to Amelie. She was quite rude to Mari about her comment of the kids being alone. That was very unnecessary. Mari was right on her money when she thought Amelie thought that this was solely Tobias’ fault. He didn’t force himself onto her! They are equally at fault here!

Jonas was very kind to all of them. That was nice to see. I suspect that when that dinner happens with all of them there, it will be the mens job to keep a calm tone between the ladies hahaha! Hopefully Diego will be thete too, so he can keep his Amelie in leash!

Lastly, great chapter! You did very well with this one. And I seriously can’t wait to see the new house. Are you building it yourself this time?

    1. Thank you so much for your comment! There was definitely a lot of intensity here XD (and Amelie is definitely not very nice haha I don’t think she’s a terrible person, necessarily. But she definitely has a mean streak!). Everyone else behaved themselves quite well though, all things considered! 😛

And no, I’m not building the house this time 😦 I am an AWFUL builder haha but JoieWilder, who did their last “renovations” did it again, and the house is gorgeous! The outside is very different. The inside bottom floor is the same, and the top floor had some rooms added/made bigger. And the yard is completely transformed! She did such an amazing job and I can’t wait for everyone to see it!

Thank you so much for reading ❤

  2. “Newsflash, bitch” XD LOL, you made me spill my popcorn all over the floor.

And uhhh…Amelie isn’t comfortable with her daughter being alone with Tobias? Heh…”Newsflash, bitch,” she’s already pregnant! LOL XD

    1. Lmao you cracked me up with this comment XD (and I know, right? She can’t get even MORE knocked up! 😛 But Amelie is just a bitch and wanted any excuse to make a mean comment… XD)

  3. Technically the parents are to blame just as much as the kids are to blame. If the parents had let the children visit (Windenburg/Les Champ Sims) the other one outside of camp, they wouldn’t be in this mess.

    1. That’s very true! The only reason Tobi and Colette had sex was because they feared they may never see each other again. There is definitely a bit of blame on Mari and Diego! (Amelie did not have a problem with Tobi, until he got Colette pregnant haha)

  4. Oh my god. Oh my god. That escalated rather quickly. Even though Amelie is pretty, I developed a huge hatred towards her. #TeamNoOneLikesAmelie 😡 Come to think of it, I had a Sim named Amelie before my 1st save accidentally got erased. My Amelie is much sweeter and kind than that Amelie. Love the drama here! #TeamDrama

“Newsflash, bitch”. WHOA! Whoa, whoa, whoa. That was something that made my hairs rise up, my eyes wide open and mouth dropped to the ground. I think my face is going to be like this for the rest of the day. Way to go, Mari, way to go. Mari has the right to be mean after the rude comment Amelie made.

You did awesome, Citizen, you did awesome. This chapter deserves a gold medal. No, actually, a platinum medal. Can’t wait to see how this goes!

    1. You are so kind, Simslover! I loved your comment! I actually love the name Amelie, so I’m glad you had a sweet one in your game 😛 And I’m very glad you enjoyed all of the drama! I was very proud of how this chapter came out, so I’m really happy that you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for reading! ❤

      1. I can imagine. She only said like… two sentences? And it was enough to make her totally unbearable. 😀
And I don’t feel for her. She only said that to provoke and to hurt others, like she was the only victims of the situation. (Because, seriously, Colette and Tobi make it any worse by staying in one room together – the damage was already done.)

        1. She is super irrational and bitchy, that’s for sure XD She is not a very warm person in-general. But she does love her daughter very much. But she’s taking her protective feelings to the extreme hahaha

  5. I don’t like Collete’s mother… Did she even consider the possibility that it was Collete’s fault too?

*sigh* Anger does me no good…

I have no other way of contacting you than replying to a comment, but I just wanted to tell you that I’m SO excited you’re reading Dust to Dust!!!!!!! ^_^ Now you can see the supernatural and dramatic beginnings of this legacy! (Also, that story is just super close to my heart <3) so thank you so much for checking it out! It means a lot.

  7. Can I just add that I love Jonas? The rock of this family! #TeamJonas4ever

Now on to that woman…Amelie. She needs a few things in her life and a swift kick in the rear end is just the first thing that comes to mind. I am also #teamcolbias because I want to see them work out and well I am a hopeless romantic okay?!

Anyways beautiful writing as always Citizen.

  8. I like that Mari could see that the two really loved each other. And Jonas. That sneak. Talking to Diego on the phone without Mari knowing. I am glad she is not mad at him. It was a risky thing to do but probably a good idea. Try to diffuse anything before it could get started. I wonder what they talked about. Maybe he warned Diego that Mari was also pregnant so it wouldn’t be a shock. Not even going to acknowledge Amelie.

    1. Well, Mari did know that Jonas had talked to Colette’s parents, but I am sure he did say some things without her knowledge to help 🙂 He is such a great guy! ❤

  9. *Blinks rapidly* I do love your interludes. They are so powerful! I do not like Amelie. How did Colette cope with her? And what are her traits? I love Jonas and Diego in this situation. They kept it so calm! I am super glad that they at least have correct attitudes towards this situation. Can’t wait to see what happens! 🙂

    1. Thank you! I love writing my interludes very much ^_^ As for Amelie, her traits are Snob, and second trait I totally can’t remember, and Family-Oriented. And it’s the last one that makes her bearable XD She positively adores her daughter. That’s her biggest redeeming quality 😛 Family is very important to her.

  10. Amelie was dead to me the moment I saw her face. (It takes two to tango Amelia!) And, okay, I know Diego cheated on Mari when they were together, but it’s been so many years! I’m not saying she should be all buddy buddy with him, but toning down the fresh rage to a slight grudge would be nice. I’m glad that Colette is staying with them and that Tobias is handling this so maturely, though. 🙂

    1. I don’t know why, but your first line of this comment made me laugh out loud XD Yeah, she is kind of a bitch 😛 And Colette and Tobi are super mature and handling this all so well. I love them ❤ ❤ ❤ (I'm still so excited that you are reading! Soon you will be caught up 😮 But the good news is that tomorrow is when my next new chapter is out hehe)

    1. Thanks for re-reading! 😀 And you make such a great observation about Amelie. These people are basically taking her daughter away from her, in her eyes. So she was not happy about that!

      Like

  11. Hahahaha Amelie is definitely a piece of work! I think she is really upset and bitter about the whole situation… Especially Colette leaving her to go live with Tobi’s family. So she might be overreacting just a LITTLE bit at the moment… XD
