Note: This is my first “interlude” chapter, which we will see crop up more and more as the story goes on. These third-person chapters offer us some extra insight into what goes out “outside the journals”. 🙂
Also of note, this chapter is rated a firm PG-13 for sexual references and a few somewhat steamy screenshots. However, there is no actual nudity in this chapter, and no explicit descriptions of sex.
Jade blinked a few times as her eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness of the bedroom around her. Sleep would not come easily to her tonight, it seemed. She just couldn’t stop thinking about the conversation she’d had with her husband earlier that evening.
What had begun as a discussion about their daughter quickly dissolved into something else entirely, and Jade couldn’t help but regret some of what she’d said.
I hope he understands. She thought sadly, staring at the handsome, sleeping face of her husband.
Jade didn’t want Mari to feel pressured to do anything she didn’t want to, or wasn’t ready for. But she also didn’t want her to be afraid to experiment, or explore… or just have a little fun. Not if that’s what she wanted to do.
Though she would never admit it aloud, sometimes Jade missed those days. The days when she could explore, too. Have a little fun whenever she wanted… and with whoever she wanted, too. Looking back now, it almost felt like another lifetime. And it might as well have been, to be honest.
It had been over twenty years since Jade had been with anyone besides her husband. Twenty years.
But she could still remember the last time like it was only yesterday.
Jade couldn’t help but roll her eyes as she glanced over at the softly snoring form who lay beside her.
It was barely 10 o’clock, and Paolo was already so drunk that he’d passed out almost as soon as he’d finished. Typical. She thought, half-amused. But the smile quickly faded from her face.
That was how he’d sweet-talked her into his bedroom in the first place, actually. Alcohol had always made her friend a bit more “persuasive”… not that it would have been too hard to convince her anyway.
Alex had made plans with his friend Bjorn earlier that night, so Jade had just been sitting around the house without much to do. And, whenever she was feeling bored, there were really only two things Jade found herself doing. Thanks to Paolo, they were all out of booze… so that left just one other option.
But instead of making her feel better, Jade just felt… Well, she wasn’t quite sure how to explain it. Dissatisfied. Empty. Wrong.
And it wasn’t for Paolo’s lack of trying. Definitely not. Jade could always count on him for a good time – that was probably half the reason they were friends, if she was being honest.
But the past few times, Jade had been left feeling the exact same way. Even with Marcus. Or that cute DJ Joaquin from down at the club. Something was just… off. Different.
And things were different with Alex, too.
Every night they spent together seemed better than the last.
It was the little things, really.
Like the way he would intertwine his fingers with hers, or stroke her face, or whisper soft words of love in her ear. It made her feel special, and beautiful. Like he really cared about her, not just her body.
Or the way he would look deeply into her eyes. It was so intense. So powerful… And in those moments, it almost felt like it was more than just their bodies that were connected.
And afterward, he would never roll over and start texting on his phone, or run off to the fridge for food, or flop against the pillow and start snoring. He would always hold her close, often until they both fell asleep.
No one had ever made her feel the way he did. Ever. In her young life, Jade had had sex more times than she could probably count. But she’d never made love before. Not until now.
It was new. It was exciting. And it was also scary as Hell.
Jade sighed softly to herself as she finished putting her clothes back on and headed quietly for the door, trying her best not to disturb Paolo. The more she thought about Alex, the more she realized how much she missed him.
I’ve gotta go see him… Bjorn must have gone home by now. She thought hopefully.
“Jeez, was it really THAT bad?” A sarcastic, half-asleep voice called from behind her.
Jade turned around, raising an eyebrow. “What are you talking about?” She replied.
“Well, you didn’t seem too into it.” Paolo continued, shrugging. “And now you’re running away from me. I see how it is.” He smirked playfully. “Probably running off to the arms of that boyfriend of yours…” Her friend gave a small wink as he spoke.
Jade had her usual reply ready – He’s not my boyfriend! She always insisted. But tonight, the words simply would not come.
Because he is my boyfriend. Jade realized. She’d avoided putting a label on what she and Alex had for so long – maybe because she’d never had a real relationship before. But that’s what it was, wasn’t it?
They knew each other better than anyone else ever could. They spent hours together just talking, and laughing, and enjoying each other’s company. Alex always knew how to make her smile. Every time she looked at him, she got butterflies in her stomach.
And they made love so perfect and passionate that, Jade now realized, she never wanted to share it with anyone else ever again.
She didn’t need anyone else. She didn’t want anyone else.
“That’s right… Meu namorado.” She confirmed, smiling. “I’ll be sure to tell Alex you said hello.”
For a moment, Paolo eyed her curiously, and looked as though he wanted to say something. But instead, he gave a small shrug and slumped back onto the bed. In mere moments, he was snoring yet again.
Alex lifted his head slowly from the pillow. “Jade…?” He muttered wearily, peering over his shoulder.
His wife pressed her lips against the back of his neck. “Go back to sleep, meu amor.” Jade said gently. “I love you.”
“Mmm.” Her husband murmured in reply before falling back into a deep sleep.
Jade smiled softly, relishing in the comforting warmth of Alex’s body pressed against hers. It was true, there were still moments when she missed the wild and carefree days of her youth. And maybe a small part of her always would…
But I would never trade this for the world.
